25.01.2022 Wellness Wednesday Tip! This point is the meeting point of 5 different meridians, so it it powerful at calming the horses body.

24.01.2022 There is no quick fix

24.01.2022 Guess!! One side has received bodywork treatment and the other has not.. Which side has received bodywork? Nearside or Offside

23.01.2022 In my previous post about the stomatognathic system I have made a reference to horses standing posture. I said that when a horse stands at rest it is called a ...neutral stance. Meaning all legs are square and canon bones are perpendicular to the ground. Often clients will ask how I know about problems the horse may have before I have walked in the stall or touched it . There is an art to collecting information from the body long before you make contact . This post is about the art of collecting some of this information and using it to help understand what your horses fascial lines are doing. How their body maybe compensating or restricted by simply observing them . By understanding some of what is going on in your horses body you can help, prevent injury and help them come back to a more balanced physical state . These will be just some examples, please remember that there are other things to consider and theses observations are just starting points. When you collect information from a horses body you must always consider their foot care, their dental care, their food and their movement and their tack. Confirmation , previous injury are also important to remember . Think about us as humans trying to alleviate tension patterns in our body. We do this by sitting with our feet up ,cocking a hip , leaning forward and generally trying to find a more comfortable position to sit , lie down or stand. Horses are more limited , as they only lie down for short periods of time. This means they need to put their body in different positions in order to relieve tension patterns with in their body while standing. Think about how your horse stands in its stall at liberty. Look at their foot placements and Weight distribution. When horses engage their stay apparatus obviously one hind one hind leg will fall out, but the horse should still maintain a square position. When I come up to barn doors and paddock doors, I see horses stand in all sorts of strange peculiar ways. They are trying to alleviate tension and find a comfortable position. There is a lot we can learn from simply observing them. I have drawn simple rectangles and have placed hoof imprints in them. The placement and orientation of the foot will tell you which way it’s facing. The darker the print the more weight it bares. Click on each image to get the information. I have only done a few of the most common things I see to give you a concept. Each horse is different and each case has other factors but it’s a good starting point as horses are particularly good at hiding their issues. All Rights Reserved 2019 Tamara Elkayam

23.01.2022 Do you spring out of bed after in the morning after a workout the day before? The answer is probably no but it depends hugely on your age, fitness and general ...health as to quite how quickly you gain that ‘spring’ in your step and it’s the same for horses. Muscle fatigue is typically due to recent activity, technically termed Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and its key to give your horse time to get over this. DOMS is due to trauma to the membrane around the muscle cells, enabling the leakage of chemicals and trigger pain receptors. These fibres contract and the muscles will get even more fatigued if a horse is kept stood in after exercise so it’s important to let them out to relax and move around. See more

21.01.2022 Fascial fun working on creating education. Fascial manipulation is a manual therapy the requires a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Fascia a...nd muscle act as the rigging that allowed the body to remain vertical. Fascia spirals in and out, this spiral arrangement of collagen fibers allow for movement with out loss of stability. Superficial fascia blends with deep fascia in the distal limb it acts as a mechanical and thermal cushion . This gliding movement hides the tension that takes palace in the deep fascia. Deep fascia is formed by connective membranes that form sheets over the muscles, it forms sheets for nerves and blood vessels and surrounds organs. It binds all the structures together. In some areas the deep fascia duplicate itself to form the deep laminate especially around the spine and vertebral muscles Epimysium is deep fascia that encloses a single muscle , these structures then subdivide into muscle bundles The body’s fascia is arranged in plains. Fascial depth is created embryological through development when it stats to fold in on it self so even though we have fascial plains it all started from a single plain. Fascia is anchored at boney stations or attachments ,where fascia fibers, muscle epimysium or tendon are integrated or continuous with the periosteum of the bone or the collagen matrix of the bone. Most of these bone attachments have communication with the next fascial attachment bone on the superfical plain rather then the deeper plain. Fascial plains regularly interweave joining or splitting from each other. These place of splitting or interweaving require the body to make choices in force transmission depending on posture and activity. Some of theses attachment bones are areas where force vectors meet and cross over creating multi tugs forces around the bone. We can use bone position and orientation to showers us the dominating tug. As a therapist it is vital to know and understand which bones in the horse are particularly subject to these force vector and where the fascial lines meet their next roundhouse. When we talk about articulation we are generally referring to bones. Meaning an area where two bones or bone and cartilage attach for the purposes of motion. Soft tissue need to articulate in the same way allowing for a sliding motion between structures and tissue, fascia articulates.

16.01.2022 It's that time of year where the paddocks are boggy and muddy and our horses are running around and a bit silly because of the sometimes crazy weather. It's not... really the best combination... Horses can easily slip and fall in muddy paddocks, or get pulled into awkward positions due to their feet being suctioned into the mud! If you've watched a horse walking in very boggy ground you'll probably have seen the extra strain and effort used to simply walk! We're not always around to see our horses running around in these conditions, to see whether they have slipped or fallen over. Slips can cause muscle tears, while falling over can cause other traumas to the tissues and underlying structures! This is why having your horse checked regularly by professional body workers is so important. Horses do some silly things and we're not always there to witness them, nor are the signs of such an event often obvious! Muscle damage can be very subtle tightness in a certain group, but before long it will start to affect the nearby structures causing more issues. By watching how the horse is moving/carrying themselves and thorough palpation of the muscles we can uncover and deal with the muscle tightness or damage before they cause further problems, as well as giving you some guidance on how to best manage any issues that may arise!

13.01.2022 The eyes tell it all... We often watch an animals eyes during a light therapy session to see what kind of a reaction we are getting. Watching the eyes gives you great input and lets you know how the animal is feeling.

08.01.2022 Hi All, Please note now that the uni semester has once again kicked off, appointments are generally booked out about 3-5 weeks in advance! Much of March is almost fully booked! There are just a few appointments left on; Wednesday 10th March... Sunday 21st March I know this can be an inconvenience, so I do encourage regular clients to lock in recurring bookings so they don’t miss out. Not only does that make it easier on your schedule as well as my own, experience shows that horses with regular bookings generally do see much better results. If you would like to grab one of these March spots for your horse, or chat about setting up a recurring booking please PM me via the page. Thank you!

06.01.2022 Have you ever done an intense workout, or do you remember your first session back after a break? Chances are the next day your muscles ached, they felt tight, s...imply walking was difficult... But what is the most important thing to do after an intense workout, or in recovery the next day so you can continue to strive? STRETCHING AND MOVEMENT! If you were to just lay in bed all day because your muscles hurt, I can guarantee you when you do eventually get up you'll be more sore than if you just got up and kept moving! It's the same for your horse! The day after an intense workout, or an increase in workload, I always do something with my horse the next day. Whether that be some handwalking, basic in hand work, or stretching. It's important to keep their muscles moving, keep them using them, even if it is in the most basic way! It both aids in and speeds up recovery if done right! This is especially important if your horse lives in a small stable or yard where they don't have the space to move around! Movement, movement, movement!

05.01.2022 Congrats Courtney Munro Equestrian and Squeak! Looks like you had a super fun weekend! Congrats on your placing in the 2* class at Geelong Horse Trials, super proud of you two!

04.01.2022 As a muscle therapist I am often asked by clients whether it is in their best interests to pursue other modalities in order to help keep their horse happy and healthy i.e Chiropractic, Equissage, Emmett, Reiki, Bit Fitting etc. and the answer put simply is YES - 1 modality does NOT fix all problems and each of these modalities differentiate from one another substantially - I cannot emphasise this enough. Muscle Therapy/Physio is an absolutely brilliant therapy that has the ab...ility to help your horse in many different ways. It is also able to uncover and shine the light on many problems that you may be having with your horse or even on problems underneath the surface you never knew existed! But as a therapist I do encourage my clients to grow their knowledge base and to use other practitioners as well - another pair of eyes (or hands) never hurt anyone! Pictured here is Jane Tscharke from Equine Bit Fit Australia - a very successful, knowledgeable source based here in South Australia for all your bitting needs!
