25.01.2022 We are VERY pleased to announce that our abstract The architecture of horse welfare: Improving horse welfare with ethologically-informed equine facility design has been selected for the "Understanding Animals" conference!! We are honoured by the scientific communitys acknowledgement of facility design as an important role in optimising animal welfare. Nowif you are interested in going to what promises to be a very informative conference, you may like to know that it ju...st proceeds Equitana Auckland! An amazing few days to be had for all things education and equine!!

24.01.2022 Professor Emeritus David Mellors writings on welfare-aligned sentience for animals offers significant scope for consideration in equine facility design and horse management in any constructed environment. We must be mindful of what a horse "consciously feels or experiences subjectively " and the extent this effects their welfare state. Optimising positive experiences for horses and providing them with the agency to limit their negative experiences, twenty-four hours a day, i...s within our capacity as their caretakers if we strive to create species-specific architecture that is contextually responsive. By this we mean, the ultimate design approach for horse facilities needs to consider all of their equine requirements AND the contributing factors of their immediate surroundings. This ultimately influences the horses experiential outcome and state of welfare. eg, thermal performance of the building will be effected by local weather, design of the buildings openings and construction... and this directly influences the horses comfort level, ability to rest, train, perform and well-being. Equitecture Horse Facility Design further discusses this approach in our article in the July/August edition of Horses and People magazine.

24.01.2022 Thanks Horse SA for inviting me to chat about horse architecture again! Its such a great opportunity to get people thinking about WHERE our horses are kept, trained and exercised and how this can effect their handling, welfare and performance.

23.01.2022 Continuing on with last weeks horse facility design highlight topic of Environmental Enrichment, this post by Equitation Science International - ESI focuses on the idea of providing our confined horses with novel activities. Great post by the amazing team at ESI! Its also worth a look at the comments and Kentucky Universitys research link put forward by Inese Stopele about gastric ulceration and radios and Margaret Andersons video link of a singly stabled horse trying de...sperately to experience physical contact and how this was sadly perceived as funny by watchers. Seemingly (some of) society does have a way to go... Great work by ESI and its followers on informing us with evidence-based equitation science and their important contribution to the welfare swell. 20.01.2022 The Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Improving Animals Lives is a great themed conference hosted by ISAE Australasia-Africa in New Zealand later in the year!! We at Equitecture Horse Facility Design were inspired to submit an abstract on HORSES AND ARCHITECTURE and look forward to what promises to be a very interesting couple of days! There will be much talk about design of equine built environments, specifically in relation to accommodating horse behaviour...and critically the consequences of not!

19.01.2022 Equine science article highlight and its application to horse facility design. Article in focus: Behavioural and Transcriptomic Fingerprints of an Enriched Environment in Horses (Equus caballus) by Lea Lansade et al. Published in Plos One, 2014 This environmental enrichment (EE) article is heavy on the science but it has some profound implications for horse facility design that are worthwhile highlighting. It defines EE as a combination of complex inanimate and social stimul...Continue reading

19.01.2022 With our New Zealand equine architecture education tour fast approaching, the prospect of chatting about all things equine + architecture to new audiences all next week is very exciting! Starting off with the ISAE Australasia-Africa conference in Wellington This will focus on ethology, being the study of animal behaviour and for Equitecture Horse Facility Design its application to constructed environments optimising horse welfare. The program promises to be informative and inspiring. Its just so amazing that so many researchers will be presenting on everything from cows and rats to poultry. We feel very humbled and privileged to be counted amongst such esteemed company, particularly Prof David Mellor and his generousness mentorship.

19.01.2022 We are in Sydney for our presentation on horse facility design at the Welsh Pony & Cob societys conference. As one of only 3 invited guests we feel very honored to be part of their jubilee celebrations!

18.01.2022 I have been privileged to briefly met Dr. Temple Grandin a couple of times and yes!!!...she is very INSPIRATIONAL!! We have a shared experience of Autism in our lives AND creating thoughtful constructed environments for animals that respond to their evolutionary needs...hers being cattle and mine horses. Years ago her advice to me was to keep on keeping on with the challenge of communicating new ideas and write.. write...write...til my equine welfare message was heard abov...e the status quo...above tradition. I rang Cristina Wilkins the next day and have been honoured to be a contributor to Horses and People magazine ever since!!! And here I am passionately still educating and writing about the benefits of horse facilities that optimise horse welfare!! Thanks Temple!

07.01.2022 Great article from Cristina Wilkins. Building the welfare momentum

05.01.2022 A very straight forward solution to the common traditional stable walls that can isolate our horses from one another and their natural need to be in contact with other equines! Great initiative Haras de la Cense! Isnt it peculiar that we often associate the highest care of our horses to be in single boxes with barriers that can ultimately effect their well being. Thanks Horse SA for sharing this stables transformation..a very valuable change for the horses quality of life.

05.01.2022 On way to Auckland for my educational events at Equitana! 03.01.2022 A quote from the research article in focus: Providing direct contact between horses is a critical factor in protecting against ulcer disease. Guy Lester et a...l, Risk Factors for Gastric Ulceration in Thoroughbred Racehorses, RIRDC, 2018 Physical contact between horses can be easily provided for where horses are grouped at pasture but not so much when they are intensively stabled or separated out in individual paddocks. For many reasons, this contact needs to be accommodated - but thoughtfully. Tomorrows highlight article post examines some more of these reasons. Stay tuned!

02.01.2022 Brilliant horsey times!
