22.01.2022 We have a lot of enquiries regarding the development of Leptospermum plantations for the production of 'manuka' or bio-active honey. Please refer to the information website www.leptospermum.com.au

19.01.2022 These pictures were taken at the nursery by Megan Rowsell early in the morning of 3rd August 2013 when the temperature tipped a balmy minus 4.0 Celcius. Fortunately the frost control system activated and avoided any damage to the stock

12.01.2022 Revegetation Project - Pelican Lagoon - Kangaroo Island Pelican Lagoon has possibly the highest environmental priority status of nearly any site on Kangaroo Island. The lagoon forms the American River Aquatic Reserve with the pristine Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park on the northern side. The conservation values are obvious, but there is also a well recognised imperative to stabilise the land in the catchment to reduce runoff into the lagoon.... The southern side is privately owned land zoned coastal conservation and it is the majority of this land that is subject to an extensive revegetation program being undertaken by the landowners with assistance from the Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board. This land was heavily cleared in the early 1900's and even more heavily over-grazed by sheep until they were removed in 1995. Since then the natural coastal vegetation has slowly begun to return. With this has come an explosion in the population of wildlife, in particular kangaroos and wallabies. It has become evident that it is impossible to establish new trees particularly in the extensive denuded areas without fencing them out during the establishment phase. Trials have clearly demonstrated that individual guards are not effective or economically viable on works of this scale. Stage one of this project will be undertaken during winter 2014. This will involve planting 6,000 trees and shrubs over 10 hectares in targeted areas. Seed was collected in 2013 from dominants occurring naturally on the property and has been propagated by ERA for delivery in June 2014. 2km of kangaroo-proof fencing has been erected in order to exclude browsing animals from the planting site until the seedlings have established. Thousands of mature, noxious woody plants, mainly African boxthorn, have been destroyed and the site will be monitored for any re-infestation. Planting is expected to be completed by July 2014 at which time planning will commence for a similar sized project in 2015. News and updates on this project will be posted as it develops. A video of the area can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up_sE87fpHA

11.01.2022 I first noticed Cypress Canker in the Camperdown - Mortlake area in Western Victoria in late October 2013. Then it was in a few scattered trees but by April 2014 it had devastated tens of thousands of trees from Geelong to well into South Australia. This disease is fatal with no realistic treatments available for halting the spread. The extensive dairying industry in the affected region will be severely impacted by a lack of protection for stock as Cypress plantations and she...lterbelts have historically dominated the landscape. A alternative shelterbelt species selection will be required urgently to begin the restoration

11.01.2022 We opened our on-line store in October 2010 and the business has grown steadily since. The site is dedicated to the supply of farm trees and shrubs to the rural community.

05.01.2022 ERA NURSERIES ANNOUNCES A NEW INNOVATIVE TREEGUARD PRODUCT A new corflute tree guard product has been researched and developed by ERA Nurseries in Hamilton. This product is known as the ‘New ERA Cylinder Treeguard’ The trend over the last decade or so has seen a definite move away from the low cost single-use milk carton and polythene sleeve guards in favour of the more robust multi-use rigid corflute product. These guards can be seen everywhere nowadays along freeways, on pu...blic lands and in private projects. The new ERA cylinder treeguard has a number of major improvements over the 200mm x 200mm x 200mm triangular treeguards. Firstly, the triangular treeguards have a tendency to spiral around the wooden stake that secures them. The straight sides of the guard act like a propeller so that when the wind is strong and the direction of the wind hits a leading edge the entire guard can spin like a propeller. This will potentially destroy the seedling that is inside the guard. Secondly, these existing corflute guards have a welded seam which means they cannot be removed from the developing tree and shrub without potentially destroying the guard or the tree or shrub within unless the guards are removed at an early stage. When setting about designing a new, superior product these design faults had to be addressed. The answer came with an incredibly simple solution in the form of a cylinder profile. The new guard is quick to assemble and is held in place by a single hardwood stake which can be removed easily to recover the treeguard for subsequent use. It is very stable in strong wind and being cylindrical it will be a lot less inclined to spiral. The new ERA treeguard has 2 and a half times the cross sectional area which will allow much greater lateral plant growth when compared to the triangular treeguard. This new product is manufactured in Australia from top quality UV treated virgin material and will be able to be re-used for many years. The new ERA treeguard is keenly priced and only available from ERA Nurseries. This product will be available online from September.
