25.01.2022 I had to destroy this beloved pet wether a few evenings ago. He suddenly went downhill and couldn't sit up. Such a shame. CAE should not happen. We have known how it spreads since the 1980s.

25.01.2022 Read and see what the CAE virus does to goats joints in this research article

24.01.2022 How to replace a tear on a bulk kid feeder. Well done Kylie

23.01.2022 Do you have artificial colostrum on hand prior to the kidding season? or some colostrum from a tested CAE & Johne's disease free goat herd in your freezer. Remeber you can't use a beaten egg in milk for kids.

22.01.2022 A nice article about an inflammation marker that can identify goats suffering with the arthritic form of CAE, rather than just being a serological positive. One very interesting sentence on page 2. Brazil has a law prohibiting the trade in animals with CAE and Johne's disease (paratuberculosis). Australia just has some vague biosecurity obligations in most states and people are free to sell livestock with JD. .

21.01.2022 Zoom presentation I have just paid for Zoom pro so can now hold large meetings of 100 and give presentations about CAE. If any Australian goat group wants to arrange one contact me ASAP ([email protected]). There will be no charge for the first group that want to volunteer to arrange it.

18.01.2022 Happy to see my Frequently Asked Questions about CAE being used on other websites. I don't care about copyright and CAE- I just want the messages re eradication and control to spread as widely as possible. However links are best as I sometimes update these as new research is published.

16.01.2022 Northern Ireland webpage about CAE - see https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk//caprine-arthritis-encephaliti They recommend great care in importing goats - your own herd should take similar precautions.

16.01.2022 Is CAE a major cause of death? It is a major cause of culling goats earlier than you should due to arthritis and wasting. Here are the results of a Canadian survey of 152 dairy goats from 13 herds - mortalities were distributed as: "Clostridium perfringens type D enterotoxemia (17.1%), pneumonia (13.8%), paratuberculosis (10.5%), listeriosis (6.6%), pregnancy toxemia (5.3%), caprine arthritis-encephalitis (4.6%), and caseous lymphadenitis (3.9%). Caseous lymphadenitis was diagnosed in 24.3% of the submitted goats, but was not a major cause of wasting or mortality. "

16.01.2022 This talk about CAE is still very relevant - unfortunately lots of CAE around the world. I have been following a case where a herd in the USA tested 100% positive.

15.01.2022 Snatch birthing kids and raising on cow's or pasteurized goats colostrum and milk affects the kid's lipid levels in their sera but not their health.

15.01.2022 Love this set up.

15.01.2022 Switzerland is controlling clinical CAE in goats, despite co-grazing with sheep making it more difficult. They have border controls preventing goats with CAE coming in.

14.01.2022 Malaysia has found low levels of CAE in goat farms. Approx 9% of 91 randomly selected goats tested positive. Presence of imported goats was a risk factor and 50% of positive animals were Saanen and Boer crosses. The authors called for control while levels were low based on testing and culling.

14.01.2022 This is what CAE lungs look like - no wonder these goats have trouble breathing. These lungs look like meat, not lungs.

14.01.2022 Maedi Visna is the same virus as CAE so improving the ventilation of goat sheds and increasing time spent out in the open grazing should help reduce the spread of CAE in goats as well.

13.01.2022 Look at this lecture about CAE. Good advice about buying goats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMdudlwrCPA

13.01.2022 Free access reference about the level of CAE in Romania - levels vary a lot from <1% to over 40% in different counties. Importations from countries with CAE were one reason for higher levels.

12.01.2022 I wish we had this service in Australia. I know that Australian researchers were working on a milk test, so hopefully it is not far away.

11.01.2022 The hard udder form of CAE is rare. Recently kidded young does have rock hard udders. However research shows that CAE affects many udders to a lesser extent. "Clinical features of indurative mastitis caused by caprine arthritis encephalitis virus and 30% showed only partial changes..... the mammary gland is the target organ of CAE virus..... "

10.01.2022 Need to know more about CAE? Watch this video where I explain about this disease to a PowerPoint slide show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BOAP-DoOyM

10.01.2022 This paper is very technical but the 1st paragraph is a good summary of CAE= "Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus of the Retroviridae family. CAEV mainly infects domestic goats worldwide but can also be found in sheep. The virus causes chronic inflammation and degenerative lesions in the articulation joints, brain, mammary gland and lung, resulting in clinical signs of arthritis, encephalitis, mastitis, pneumonia and significant weight loss [1]. The vi...rus has monocytes/macrophages as target cells for infection and the major means of CAEV transmission is from mother to kids via colostrum and milk [1,2]. CAEV generates significant economic loss from the diminution in weight and in milk production in addition to premature culling [3]. Owing to the fact that there is currently no treatment or vaccine to circumvent CAEV-associated disease, control of the virus in herds is recommended and requires good breeding practices to restrict viral transmission. 10.01.2022 The Australian dairy industry eradicated their retrovirus - EBL. Like CAE it was spread in milk and blood and had a long incubation period of years. If they can do it the Australian dairy goat industry can do the same. Read page 16 to see how they have done it and continue to prove freedom

06.01.2022 This reference was looking at why "goats persistently infected by the caprine arthritis encephalitis lentivirus (CAEV) typically alternate between periods of low viral expression and phases of reactivation of viral replication, which often coincide with lactation in does inside them " . It seems that when the udder increases in size before kidding the udder cells are sticky and the white blood cells containing the CAE virus stick on and this helps infect their kids via the colostrum and milk.

05.01.2022 277 herds, mainly Saanen and Toggenburg, were tested for CAE in Brazil and EVERY HERD had at least one positive. Without control programs or accreditation programs CAE spreads.

03.01.2022 If you purchased an expensive buck with swollen knees what would you do? I have been in IM conversations with someone in SE Asia who has purchased a buck who developed swollen knees. None of his other goats have CAE signs. He breed goats for meat. He says he can't get CAE tests in his country. What advice would you give?

01.01.2022 Algeria has high levels of CAE. 37 out of 38 farms had positive goats. Total % of positive goats was almost 30% of animals tested. See https://content.sciendo.com//jvetres/62/4/article-p549.xml
