22.01.2022 Last night SBS showed Episode 6 of Michael Portillo's Great Asian Railways Journeys: Jakarta - Borobudur. It is an excellent story of Dutch colonial history in Indonesia. Even shows how to make a variety of the well-known (certainly to Dutch people) lumpia spring roll. You can view it on SBS On Demand: Seehttps://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/1772061251633/great-asian-railways-journeys-jakarta-to-borobudur

11.01.2022 Now that Brexit is on, UK truck drivers are finding unexpected consequences. Personal ham sandwiches can no longer be brought in when crossing to Europe as travellers are blocked from bringing in meat and dairy products. 06.01.2022 Parking in the Netherlands is usually a problem even for bicycles. If you don't have a car but have problems parking your bike, the "fietsvlonder" may be a solution. It is a street platform where cars cannot park but offers a rack for 8 bikes. Source: Dutch Cycling Embassy. See: https://www.denhaag.nl//fietsvlonders-een-plank-met-fietsb

04.01.2022 The Dutch ship the Duyfken was the first known European ship to reach Australia in 1606. A full-scale reproduction of the original ship, using historical research, was launched in 1999. It was based in Fremantle but undertook many journeys. However, funding ran out and the ship was gifted to the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney to exhibit it and undertake its future maintenance. On 4 Dec 2020 the ship left Fremantle for refitting in Newcastle and has now arrived ...in Sydney. It can be visited daily subject to health regulations. The original Duyfken voyage was the first in a succession of Dutch voyages during the 17th century to chart almost two-thirds of the Australian coastline. The Duyfken voyage was 164 years prior to James Cook's voyage in 1770 who is often credited with discovering Australia. See: https://www.sea.museum/whats-on/vessels/duyfken

02.01.2022 For our yearly Dutch Filmday at the ACMI Federation Square we select from films shown at the yearly "Nederlands Film Festival" in Utrecht. The 2020 Festival (on-line), just closed, was their 40th year. A special Op1 talk show was held last week to commemorate this event. You may remember Renée Soutendijk, Willeke van Ammelrooy and Monic Hendrickx who were there. Details of the winning 2020 films are on: https://www.erasmus.org.au/dutchcinema.php. You can now see the Op1 show on: https://www.npostart.nl/op1-vanaf-het-nff-in//POW_04809608
