12.01.2022 COACH IN FOCUS Eric Brown (QLD) One of the busiest coaches at the Oceania Championships next week will undoubtedly be Queensland coach Eric Brown. With six at...hletes competing in 30 events he will be stretched. Highly successful in multi-event, Eric is the coach of decathletes Commonwealth medallist Cedric Dubler and World U20 champion Ash Moloney. Also in Townsville Eric will be guiding Olympian Caitlin Sargent-Jones, Youth Olympic Games high jumper Lizzie Moss, heptathlete Tori West and hurdler Cooper Schmidt. One event in Australia has been dominated by his coaching magic the decathlon. He has coached four of the top-13 in history, including three of the top-7. His athletes on the all-time list are: #3 Cedric Dubler, #4 Ash Moloney, #7 Jason Dudley, #13 Matt McEwen. He also coached #23 Les Kuorikoski. Some other athletes to receive the benefit of Eric’s great coaching have been dual Commonwealth Games hurdler Fiona Cullen, 1.90m high jumper Catherine Drummond and 59m discus thrower Debbie Pickersgill. Eric’s coaching career started 35-years ago. I started coaching because there were hardly any coaches in Bundaberg where I was transferred for work, he said. My son was multi-talented so I read every book possible to improve my knowledge across the board in all events. I then started to work my way through the coaching courses. For the last 20 years be has been based in Brisbane where he has a large squad keeping him full-time. He has had many memorable moments in his coaching career. I have been lucky enough to have many highlights, particularly Cedric’s Olympic qualifier and Ashley’s world title. I have been blessed to have athletes like Caitlin Sargent-Jones who have made almost every team since she was 17-year-old. He also remembered fondly Jason Dudley’s world junior and Commonwealth Games medals, Les Kuorikoski fourth at world juniors and Fiona Cullen’s sprinting and hurdling achievements. A very modest Eric was reluctant to receive any limelight for himself. I don’t coach for the recognition. I coach because I love seeing young athletes reach their full potential. Sharing their journey is something special. I am just as excited when the school I coach does well or a young junior does a personal best. Thanks Eric for your significant contribution to coaching in Australia. #thisisathletics #coles #blksport #beyondlimitsknown
