15.01.2022 What we don’t seem to understand is this: coercive controlling behaviour is not lesser than physical violence: it is a predictor of it. It is a massive, scarlet flag unfurled and flapping in the wind, an indicator a woman is unsafe. .....a collection of behaviours designed to strip someone of their sense of autonomy and self-worth. This can include deleting male contacts from social media, constant surveillance, manipulation, constant texts or phone calls, insults, dictat...ing the minute details of a woman’s life, including rules on what she eats, where and how long she sleeps, what kinds of sexual acts she performs, what music she listens to. ......the evidence suggests the level of control in abusive relationships is a better predictor than prior assaults of future sexual assault and of severe and fatal violence. This, he writes, is because coercive control targets a victim’s autonomy, equality, liberty, social supports and dignity in ways that compromise the capacity for independent, self-interested decision making vital to escape and effective resistance to abuse. Moreover, in a significant minority of abuse cases, offenders are able to subjugate and entrap female partners without the use of violence.
