25.01.2022 Great pic Jared Strapp! Well done Onkaparinga residents!!
22.01.2022 Today I wrote to Primary Industries Minister David Basham asking him to review his decision not to designate the City of Onkaparinga as a non-GM crop area. Read my letter here: https://yoursay.onkaparinga.sa.gov.au//31/documents/186445 It needs to be made clear the minister hasn’t said no to councils he's said no to the hardworking, successful winemakers and grape growers of our world-class wine region, who know their business and markets better than anyone.
20.01.2022 Congratulations to our #FutureLeaders, the 2020 graduates of the Children's University Australasia!! This program is run annually in collaboration with The University of Adelaide to encourage primary school aged children to participate in a range of activities designed to inspire them and expand their horizons. The ethos of the Children’s University is People cannot aspire to what they don’t know. Participants must complete a minimum of 30 hours of voluntary out of school learning activities to graduate. Some of the kids graduating this year have completed more than 400 hours! To get involved in the program please contact Angela at Woodcroft Library on 8384 0050
20.01.2022 Yesterday, three-year-old local Ella cut the ribbon and officially opened the new playground with me at Clarrie Eatts Reserve on Norman Road, Aldinga Beach. During weekly trips to the beach with her grandparents, Ella had been keenly watching the upgrade progress and was delighted to be asked to do the ribbon-cutting honours. The verdict? I love the slide and the big boat!... Families are invited to enjoy the new playground equipment, pathway connections, upgraded irrigation, new shelter, barbecue, table and seating and improved landscaping. The City of Onkaparinga maintains around 800 reserves, including 240 playgrounds. You can discover nearby playgrounds using the 'your map' feature on our website https://www.onkaparingacity.com #Onkaparinga
19.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It also marks the start of #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence. This international campaign raises awareness about violence against women and girls, and calls for change. ... Today we’ll be releasing the second instalment of the Southern Deadly Sounds Program which was produced at Base 10 Youth Centre. Young people involved in a song writing and performing program recorded two hip hop tracks that raise awareness of - and denounce - violence against women. Keep an eye out for the fresh tracks on the Onkaparinga Youth Facebook page. We've partnered with #zonta to display messages at locations around Onkaparinga over the 16 days of this campaign. We're also supporting the Southern Women Matter campaign to secure funding for a hub and access to better support services in the south. In the coming months, work will start on a contemporary public artwork and landscaped surrounds in Rotary Park which acknowledges the impact of domestic and family violence on people, families, our community and our country. The Place of Courage is a collaborative effort between the Spirit of Woman and council. Its intended to be a space of comfort and healing and an environment that will promote unity and courage. Beyond the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we’ll continue to actively support a number of partnerships and initiatives that address this very important issue. Together let’s say YES to gender equity an NO to any kind of violence.
17.01.2022 Great news!!! After years of advocacy efforts by the City of Onkaparinga, Katrine Hildyard MP and the community, the O’Sullivan Beach Boat Ramp will be upgraded. Council has been in discussions with the state government, who is responsible for infrastructure seaward of the high-water mark (such as the ramp and pontoons), about an upgrade of ramp since 2012. In that time, we’ve lobbied them for funding while providing ongoing maintenance and improvements. In March this year Co...uncil endorsed a $35,000 commitment towards the upgrades and continued lobbying for the rest of the funding required. We welcome the news that the state government will include a $20m injection towards our State’s jetties and boat ramps in the upcoming budget. Read more about it here: https://www.onkaparinganow.com/upgrade-for-osullivan-beach/
16.01.2022 We will remember them. Lest we forget. Thank you Morphett Vale RSL for a beautiful and moving ceremony this morning.
14.01.2022 What a cracker of a day for the OnkaStompa Fishing Comp! Now in its 15th year, this awesome event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Childhood Cancer Association. Every week a child in South Australia is diagnosed with Cancer. These funds will help provide much needed supports to these children and their families. Well done to the event organisers, the many local businesses that support this event, all the participants, and congratulations to the winner... who reeled in an impressive 41cm Bream Katrine Hildyard MP Chris Picton MP Amanda Rishworth MP
08.01.2022 This morning it was my honour to host the Mayor's Reception to celebrate Naidoc Week in Onkaparinga. This year's theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ focuses on the connection of Aboriginal people as caretakers and traditional owners of country. That the spiritual relationship that Aboriginal people have always had with this land is demonstrated through their continued advocacy and care of country. I would like to thank Elder Aunty Georgina Williams who opened with a Greeting t...o Country, which was followed by a smoking ceremony by Traditional Owner Karl Telfer and a performance by Yellaka old wisdom new ways, followed by Kaurna musician Karno and guest speaker Drew Kilner, and the creation of a clay community artwork by Jannaya Williams and Susan Roberts. The annual NAIDOC family fun day and march at Christies Beach isn’t being held this year due to COVID-19, but instead a series of videos will be published each weeknight, featuring guest interviews with community members discussing what this year’s NAIDOC theme means to them. Find out more about the week's activities on our website: www.onkaparinganow.com/always-was-always-will-be #Onkaparinga #NAIDOCWeek2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Inc. 07.01.2022 H A V E Y O U R S A Y We have some important questions for you about the services and infrastructure your rates are spent on. One of Council’s roles is to plan for the long-term financial future of the City of Onkaparinga, and our Long Term Financial Plan is essential in helping us to do this.... We’re reviewing the Plan and want to know how you think we should fund the services and infrastructure that help make our city great. To share your views, take part in our 10-minute survey here. https://qre.host/Ocem
04.01.2022 Great to catch up with Sussan Ley MP, Federal Environment Minister, and Senator Andrew McLachlan CSC yesterday at the future regenerated shellfish reef site at #PortNoarlunga. The Nature Conservancy resident expert Anita Nedoskyo spoke to us about the special native Angasi oysters that will grow on the reef, and the many benefits this will bring to our marine environment. The Federal Government is supporting this reef through its $20 million reef builder program. Our communit...y’s passion for the project helped secure its location in our city. The project is set to kick off early next year with construction due to begin in September 2021 bringing new jobs and many other great benefits to our region. Stay tuned, there’ll be lots of opportunities for community to have their say and get involved in exciting citizen science initiatives.
03.01.2022 The popularity of Wilfred Taylor Reserve continues to grow! To support this, Council is currently undertaking some minor upgrades to the Southern Districts Model Car Club with a new unsealed access road pathway and event car parking. Installation of new track fencing will commence next week and be completed before Christmas. Thank you for your continued support and patience while these upgrades are taking place.
