24.01.2022 Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used in sport medicine for pain relief and mobility restoration in soft tissues. Low and high energy shock (acoustic) waves are generated by the machine and move from the probe into the desired structure in a non invasive manner. Contact us for more information or book online: erkopodiatry.com.au

21.01.2022 Ladies footwear.... Here are some useful hints on what to keep in mind when shoe shopping this summer! I spend a lot of time talking to patients about shoes and while everyone getting around in dorky (but supportive!) sneakers is a podiatrists dream, I realise its just not going to happen! Take particular note of the heel fat pad overhanging in mules or other backless shoes. I see this causing problems in my patients all the time. https://goo.gl/tSn4Mc

20.01.2022 Thanks to all our family and friends for helping us celebrate the opening of Erko Podiatry last night! We are now officially open.

19.01.2022 It won’t come as a surprise that one of the most common topics I discuss with my patients is shoes. For those patients that run regularly, shoes become all the more important given the increased and repetitive stress that is placed on the feet and legs during running. Runners come in many different shapes and sizes and vary greatly in the speeds and distances they run. Running shoes need to vary accordingly.

18.01.2022 A recent study suggested that as many as 9.6% of people are suffering from heel pain at any one time with women slightly more at risk. Conditions that can cause heel pain include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, tarsal coalition and gout. This pain can be debilitating and stop the person from exercising, playing sport and even make getting out of bed be extremely painful. Podiatrists are experts in treating these conditions, seeing these presentations daily in the clinic, so if you are one this large percentage suffering heel pain it is important to know there is help available.

15.01.2022 Podiatrists are able to assess foot and lower limb function to detect any abnormalities, weaknesses or potential issues within their gait (walking) cycle which may be causing pain Once these are identified a treatment plan, which may include a stretching and strengthening program, footwear changes, orthotic prescription and/or soft tissue therapy/Shockwave therapy, will be developed to restore function and enable you to move pain free. This is required for any foot, ankle or knee pain including plantar fasciitis, bunions, runners knee, ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, runners knee and much more. If you are suffering from any of these conditions please get in touch with one of our podiatrists

13.01.2022 During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause your skin to lose its elasticity and moisture. Swelling and increased weight, particularly in the 3rd trimester, places extra strain on the skin around the heels. Thankfully there are steps you can take to address this. Watch our Top 5 Tips for treating and preventing dry and cracked heels during pregnancy. Or head to our website for the full article: https://bit.ly/3kkE8g3

13.01.2022 Each foot consists of at least 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons which work together to provide support, stability and mobility whilst we work, stand and play. It is important that we continue to maintain strength and load in these structures so they can continue to do their important job, as if they are underperforming injury and foot pain can result. Podiatrists are specialists in rehabbing and training these structures so that your foot can once again move without pain. Our new evidence based shockwave machine (using the STORZ shockwave mechanism) is the ideal answer to treating heel pain, Achillies pain, neuromas and calf pain. We recommend 6 sessions spaced weekly. Get in touch or make an appointment online!

07.01.2022 An ingrown toenail occurs when part of the nail - most commonly the inside or outside edge - grows into the skin surrounding it. This can cause localised irritation, inflammation and discomfort. In more severe cases, the nail can actually penetrate the skin leading to an infected ingrown toenail. Initially symptoms are mild. You may feel some discomfort in tight fitting shoes or when the blankets are resting on the end of your toe in bed. If left untreated an infection may develop. The toe may become more swollen, red and pus may be present. There may be toenail pain even with the lightest pressure on the nail and life can become pretty miserable!
