23.01.2022 Long time between posts, but I've been busy making ukes and loving my time in the workshop. Here's some shots of my most recent ukes. The first is a tenor ukulele which has a solid mahogany body (back, sides and top). The neck is western red cedar. The headstock veneer and heel cap are celery-top pine. It has Grover open-geared tuners and is available for sale. The second is another tenor uke. The back and sides are blackwood and the top (front) is western red cedar. It has a hand-cut leatherwood rosette and a western red cedar neck. The headstock veneer is fiddleback blackwood. Also available for sale. Both play beautifully and come with a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship.

22.01.2022 I hardly ever post on here, (bit technologically challenged to be honest). Thought you might be interested in my most recent project. It's a resonator uke. Under that brass cover, there's a spun aluminium cone. The strings rest on that cone, via a wooden thing called a biscuit and the sound is amplified. It has a distinctive, tinny sound that I really like. Great old technology. I'm building it as a favour for a mate.

21.01.2022 I started this page for a bit of fun and to let people see the instruments Im making. Let me know what you think. Kev

21.01.2022 Huon pine top and fiddleback Blackwood back and sides. Awaiting its new owner, Cousin Julie.

20.01.2022 Progress on the leatherwood tenor ukulele. The 1st photo shows a dry assembly of the dovetail joint which connects the neck and body. Photo 2 shows dry assembly of neck and body with dartboard and bridge approximately in place. Photo 3 is a different angle and 4 is a closeup of the engraved headstock. Lavern did the engraving. Emily did a beautiful job and is very affordable. Thanks. Next step is gluing the fretboard to the neck then after some rechecking, attaching the neck. Cheers!

19.01.2022 This tenor ukulele is nearly finished. Ive spent the last couple of days oiling it and discovered a dragonfly at the lower part of the top (front). Its a little hard to make it out on these photos, but its there. The headstock is a timber sampler from a drinks tray I recently bought in New Zealand. Plus, I like the way ukulele making is such a serious business. What better use of clothes pegs than to clamp the kerfing on my latest ukulele.

19.01.2022 My most recent couple of ukuleles. Both are keepers for promotional purposes. Thanks to Emily at LabelEm in Drysdale for the laser engraving on the soundboards. Im quite happy with these two. The larger one is a tenor and the smaller is a soprano. Tenor has a mahogany back and sides with a tiny top. Soprano has a cedar top and fiddleback blackwood back and sides.

19.01.2022 I've been busy makjng jigs for my next two projects, both small body guitars, but here's an update on the leatherwood uke. The last shot is the bridge being glued on with a couple of bridge clamps I made. It's looking really nice. Even if I say so myself.

18.01.2022 My nephew and his partner sent me these spontaneously. Errant Instruments merch! Thanks you guys. Clever or what?!

17.01.2022 I finished the leatherwood tenor ukulele, aside from some tweaking of the frets, which are a bit rattly, (even for a uke). Im quite happy with finish, particularly the beautiful woods. I hope you enjoyed the making as much as I did. This one, and the dragonfly uke I posted about previously are for sale. Message me.

16.01.2022 Now working on a tenor ukulele with Blackwood back. Ill try and keep more photos of the process so you can see how it comes together. I didnt get a shot of bending the sides but photo 1 is the sides in a mould with kerfing going on. See photo captions for details.

15.01.2022 In between working this weekend, I cut the binding channel (the groove around the edges) that will take some red pine timber to reinforce the joints and improve the look. I also hand-cut the mortice part of the dovetail joint for the neck. These jobs dont really progress the instrument much, but theyre important for the next steps. Binding the uke then attaching the fretboard and making the tenon on the neck so I can join it to the body. There are some thin strips of red pine on that mould being bent for binding.

12.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who has viewed, liked or commented on this page. I really appreciate your encouragement and support. This morning before work I took the clamps off my latest tenor uke, and am quite happy. Here it is after a bit of trimming and sanding. Shown with the roughly shaped neck and fretboard. Im happy with the progress so far. Dont think I mentioned the top (front) is Tassie Leathewood. I like the fact that the top and back are kind of negatives of each other. Let me know what you think.

10.01.2022 Dragonfly uke done and dusted. This is the one which in real life has the impression of a dragonfly in the grain on the lower part of the front. It doesnt show up so well in the photos, but its there. Im happy with this one.

04.01.2022 Binding the leatherwood top uke today. First, red pine binding glued and applied, (around the edges of the body), secured with masking tape and a couple of clamps. Then you can see the binding before sanding, then sanded. Check out the engraved Errant headstock. Working on the neck and neck joint tomorrow. Im loving this.

03.01.2022 I made a tenor ukulele that Ill keep as my player and to promote Errant Instruments. 3 piece Rimu top and mahogany back, sides and neck. Beautiful engraving on the soundboard by Labelem in Drysdale.
