20.01.2022 What's that thing called? "Plan tar fash e itis" That nasty term relating to pain in the heel. One of the most commonly mispronounced terms but one of the more common lower limb conditions that we will see here at Errol St Physio. Often we will see people hobbling in with sore and stiff heels that are worse in the morning, warm up slightly and start to hurt towards the end of the day. The pain will often be focal to the inside of the heel but can radiate to the arch and under...side of the heel pad. If you are suffering from heel pain please do not hesitate to contact us at Errol St Physiotherapy and put your feet in our hands. #podiatry #physiotherapy

18.01.2022 Bone stress injury, how can I avoid it coming into Preseason? 1. Ensure a graduated return to training - Dependent on your recent running history, allow a 6 week block to reload toward group training. 2. Breakdown training components Consider training frequency, running volume, work, rest ratios, speed, acceleration, change of direction, jumping or kicking Increase two of these at one session by 10% per week... 3. Allow adequate recovery - 2-3 days off legs between sessions 4. Get strong! 15.01.2022 (Great post by @thefreshmanphysio) One of the most frequently asked questions we get as Physiotherapists is: What is the best posture? The short answer is it doesnt exist.... For years there has been a perception that there is a correct posture and that bad posture can cause pain and dysfunction. We often hear phrases such as sit up straight or "dont bend your back when you lift. This creates fear around certain movements or postures, changing the way people perceive their pain and often causing apprehension and fear avoidance behaviour. This post highlights that pain and posture have a poor correlation and that people without pain can have a wide range of positional variance with tasks such as sitting or lifting. The main take home message is that we need to change our language and focus more on education when talking about posture. Sit Up Straight: Time to Re-evaluate - Slater et al., (2019).

14.01.2022 You are enough. This may seem simple but it is strong. Often we will see people who do not believe in themselves, that an injury or past injuries are them and that they need to be fixed. Actually, we dont fix. We help, we guide, we assist. The important part is that it is you who is healing, rehabbing and growing.... Take from the message what you will but you are enough. #physiotherapy #podiatry #rehabilitation

11.01.2022 So you have decided to get back into running or waking. You have you active wear sorted, got a goal in mind but you need a new pair of runners! You have an old pair in the back of the wardrobe that have been going since Justin Timberlake and Britney were a thing. Time to get online or go to the shops for a new set of wheels.... What do I look for?! Firstly, getting the right size is important. It is just not about length but width and volume too. Several shoe brands will offer a wider fit which will not only accommodate you with your length but for the width and volume as well. Secondly, be open to different brands and styles. Unless you have run in the same style and make forever with no issues then if it is not broke then dont fix it. You might be surprised that some brands will offer features that may suit you. Lastly, comfort is king. The shoe should be comfortable. This may seem self explanatory but it is often overlooked when choosing a shoe. This may not be an exhaustive list but it is a great place to start Happy running #physio #podiatry #podiatrist #running #runningphysio #footwear # runningpodiatrist #foothealth #beactive

11.01.2022 Though the popularity of minimalism has decreased from its boom nearly a decade ago, there are still runners out there who find that use of a minimalist shoe works well for them. Brands such as Altra, Merrell, Vivo and Vibram have become renowned for their take on such shoes, even the larger players in the running shoe market will offer a version or several of a minimalist shoe/ runner. If you are curious about giving a minimalist shoe a try, there are some things to consider... as the change from a traditional running shoe to a minimalist shoe may be a shock to the system. We would recommend a very gradual transition into the shoe, or alternating your footwear regularly. But before you take the leap into minimalism, you may want to test out a lighter weight or lower drop shoe first to help ease the transition. credit @newbalanceaustralia @ altrarunning #physiotherapy #podiatry #podsfixfeet #runningshoes #barefeet #barefootshoes #minimalistshoes #rehab #strongfeet #northmelbourne #podiatristmelbourne #physiomelbourne source: Esculier et al., (2015). 10.01.2022 WELCOME BACK SOS! We’re all happy to have Shane back in the clinic after 4 months away in the Western Bulldogs AFL Hub in the Gold Coast. Shane has been posting regular content for us on our social media accounts and taking Telehealth consults during his time away, but we’re all excited for him to be back on Victorian soil (with great timing may we add). Great to have you back

10.01.2022 The maximalist shoe! So big we needed two panes to fit it all in! This type of shoe has seen an explosive following over the past decade with more than just ultra runners adopting this type of footwear.... Characterised by a thick, chunky midsole and an often wider, flared base do not think that it weighs a lot. In fact most maximalist shoes will be considerably lighter than they appear, this is due to the blown out EVA foam. Additionally, some maximalist shoes are not too dissimilar to their perceived opposites. Shoes such as the Hoka One One or the NB 1080 will have a smaller drop or pitch. Again, when considering switching shoes go and try them out. @newbalanceaustralia @hoka #physio #podiatry #podsfixfeet #runnerfun #runningshoes #rehab #strongfeet #northmelbourne #podiatristmelbourne #physiomelbourne #chunkyshoes

08.01.2022 As we enter into the third week of staying at home, we might be noticing that the days are slightly longer, warmer and the weather improving. It is a wonderful time to get out and be moving. Regular Exercise, no matter what form is a brilliant way of not only looking after your physical health but your mental wellbeing. Exercise may positively influence your mental health by... - releasing the feel good chemicals in your brain such as endorphins and serotonin. - it helps your sleep better so you re charge and re energise for the next day. - gives you a sense of accomplishment and goal achievement. - it can be a shared activity, think of Zwift group rides or virtual run clubs. 30 minutes of vigorous exercise daily at least 5 times per week is recommended. Remember its not the type of activity that is important. Its more about getting active and involved. 07.01.2022 Low arches? High Arches? My arches collapse. I am a pronator! I am a supinator!?! These are many things that we hear in the clinic when people attend for their feet. But how much does your foot posture impact on your health and wellbeing?... Like the post earlier in the week, there is a poor correlation between pain and foot posture. People without pain can have a wide range of positional variance with tasks such as running, walking (check out former Olympic and World Champion Haile Gebrselassie and his running style when next on Youtube). The simple answer depends on the individual. In literature there is a weak connection between overall foot posture and foot pain. Some foot postures can predispose some to people to particular injuries such as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, Patellofemoral pain and tibialis posterior tendinopathy. However, it must always be taken in context to the individual with their degree of supination and pronation or simply movement being ideal for them. #podiatry #podiatrist #healthyfeet #physiotherapy #footdoctor #running #errolstphysio

05.01.2022 Tendons of the lower limb behave like a spring. Like the springs of a weathered trampoline can become rusty and brittle..... So can our tendons when we resume sprinting, accelerating and jumping after a period of time off (LOCKDOWN !). ... 2 main factors to consider when maintaining tendon health Avoid sudden spikes in springy activities- sprinting, jumping etc. Maintain isolated strength to the muscles associated with the tendons required for your sport. Like most of the human body - tendons are habitual tissues. Keep your training consistent and supplement with some strength work and your tendons will love you for it!

02.01.2022 MTSS or 'Shin Splints' is a common overuse injury that we seen at Errol St Physio by our health professionals Often patients will state pain along the inside and front of the shin, and pain on walking/running with the pain subsiding when the activity finishes. Like many overuse injuries there are multiple contributing factors and it usually takes more than one to tip you over the edge.... Some common factors include: Rapid increase in load Training type and surfaces Footwear/orthoses Calf and lower limb strength Ankle mobility Individual mechanic If your shin pain continues after your exercise, whilst you are walking and painful later in the day or night. Please do not delay in seeking treatment. If you are experiencing shin pain, book in with your health professional. #podiatry #physiotherapy #shinpain #returntoplay #training #football #footpain #northmelbourne #podiatrymelbourne #physiomelbourne #melbournepod #melbournephysio
