25.01.2022 Carriageworks market and Nirin @ Carriageworks are back!

24.01.2022 Keep Calm Act Like You Already Have Covid-19Keep Calm Act Like You Already Have Covid-19

24.01.2022 "For a long time now we've designed our streets to be dominated by the car. We looked at this as an opportunity to say, 'what if we looked at our streets differently?'" said John Prentice from Woods Bagot, the firm managing Central Station's refurbisment. https://www.smh.com.au//giving-back-the-streets-the-plan-t

23.01.2022 If you were renovating today you'd most likely turn off the gas and shift to the more efficient induction, save the $$$ on the connection fee for a utility bill. So why, asks Michael West, a former Fairfax journalist is mainstream media acting as free promotion for a fossil fuel campaign where the taxpayer funds its infractructure... because no private finance will anymore. https://www.michaelwest.com.au/gas-gush-the-toadies-of-mai/

22.01.2022 Does anyone in Erskineville not have a Green Energy Plan? Renting or owning, regardless of whether your roof good for solar panels, you can support the transition by making sure your energy plan is a Green Energy one. It literally takes 10 mins to swap. Just phone the chosen supplier (Enova Energy a great one) and sign up. They will do the rest of ending your other energy supplier agreement (BYE BYE AGL, Energy Australia, Origin export gas polluter etc). https://www.canstarblue.com.au/elec/green-energy-australia/

22.01.2022 Sydneysiders always enjoy the Melbourne Cup virtually/vicariously. Dress up and enjoy in the expanse of Bar 5 in South Erko (otherwise known as Alexandria west). https://www.restaurant5.com.au/reservations

22.01.2022 Combining all the best things in Erskineville. Please get along if you can and support this Theatre Company we're very fortunate to have in our neighbourhood.

21.01.2022 UNSW has developed a great online tool called SunSpot where you can map your roof's potential for solar based on location, orientation and size. Just enter the address here... https://pv-map.apvi.org.au/sunspot/map#/

21.01.2022 Hard stop at Victoria border

21.01.2022 Cycling infrastructure boosts the number of cyclists, and the cars on our roads. People who ride bikes are happier than people who drive. You always find a park right at the door.

21.01.2022 Make your own mask why don't you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ljLYHedxyU

21.01.2022 Another swimming pool for all! Thank you Clover Moore for your planning and delivery of these amazing community assets.

20.01.2022 Public Interest Annoucement: Erskineville is not Mosman. #SoThere https://www.smh.com.au//mosman-is-not-newtown-council-rais

20.01.2022 Important for every family. How well do you know your childrens grandparents?

19.01.2022 What a great project to be involved with! Can you go and help!

18.01.2022 23 years since the Bring Them Home Report was released. Twenty years since we walked as Australians across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to say "SORRY". Doing something means Giving Nothing to Racism. It means recognising the inequity and inequality entrenched in our political and social systems, and not accepting it.

18.01.2022 Watch Jess on The Project talking about how City of Sydney is implementing strategies for liveability and communities in our heartland. https://twitter.com/theprojecttv/status/1328608593550176257

18.01.2022 If there was one street in Erko you could close to traffic, which one would it be? This was Martin Place when cars used to go down it, before it became public space for all.

17.01.2022 Because we're now at the Covid19 #BecomeABetterConsumer stage, check out the ethical rating of your toilet-paper. It doesn't have to be recycled paper to be ethical but putting wipes down the toilet is NEVER EVER OK. https://www.choice.com.au//everyday-items/rev/toilet-paper

16.01.2022 Dear Melbourne. How's it going.

16.01.2022 In a nutshell, for under-40s, unless your parents own their home your chance of entering the Erskineville property market are virtually nil. https://www.theguardian.com//inheritance-work-middle-class

16.01.2022 Now that its winter, cygnets and moor hen chicks have appeared in the Sydney Park wetlands once again! This is always a special time, but feels even more so th...is year as we start to carefully venture out after months of lockdown. If youre looking for something to do in the final hours of this long weekend (from a safe physical distance!) swan down to Sydney Park and say hello.

14.01.2022 "This is a little virus with no brain, can't survive by itself, it can only be seen with an electron microscope and it's winning. And unless we're very careful, it always wins." Norman Swan. Wash your hands. Don't touch your eyes or nose unless you just washed your hands. Stay socially distanced. Socialise in the beer garden, on the balcony, in your backyard. Take care. Stop the spread. Melbourne's trajectory could happen here. No one is saying don't make love to a Security Guard. They are saying In Isolation Means In Isolation.

14.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone. Enjoy the Saturday sleep in. Park Run still not on. No school sports. No Carriageworks (Or Erko School) market. And it's not really beach weather is it.

13.01.2022 Dr Hassan on the maths of Herd immunity. How many dead would you find acceptable to achieve "free borders" again.

13.01.2022 Dont we know it. Sydney Park is our local sanctuary.

13.01.2022 It's the weekend.

12.01.2022 Erko has a lot to thank Jack Mundey for. His movement to preserve urban green space from development prevented our suburb becoming a thorough-fair for a large arterial road that the NSW dept for roads wanted to build in the 1970s. The eponymous Green Bans park opposite the Woolworths on Erko Rd commemorates the win, this land the site of shops and houses demolished to facilitate the development. The scheme was only abandoned after Mundey and his union refused to continue all work on the road, putting long term public interest and "the commons" ahead of their pay checks.

11.01.2022 Not good. This link compares other countries. https://mobile.abc.net.au//coronavirus-data-austr/12132478 Obviously if you want to feel better, go straight to USAs.

11.01.2022 Forget Nimby, YIMBY is the new attitude for those in the city committed to equity and social justice in urban development and housing. Yes In My Backyard. America has a housing crisis - Homeownership for young adults is at a multidecade low, about a quarter of renters pay half their income to a landlord, about four million people spend at least three hours driving to and from work. Sydney has people driving hours to and fro from work, hospital staff at RPA and Randwick who ca...n't afford to rent, hospitality workers, school teachers at our fab public schools who drive in and out from the mountains. It's a commitment benefiting us all. So how can we help? This New York Times article traces how one public servant became a convert to a radically simple doctrine - Build Buid Build when he was confronted with California’s housing crisis slammed into a wealthy suburb. (and let's not deny it, Erskineville and inner west a cashpot for homeowners or got into the market ten years or more ago). https://www.nytimes.com//housing-crisis-conor-dougherty-go See more

10.01.2022 Night out for 10. Who doesnt want to. Even if you dont think you have friends you will find a full set for this. https://www.broadsheet.com.au//miss-pubs-inner-west-favour

09.01.2022 Theres a trip clicker on the new Railway Pde/Henderson Rd cycle path so show your support by giving this smooth new route a go. Everyone weve seen on it so far has had a big smile on their face. Cyclepaths = happiness.

08.01.2022 This is good news. And thank goodness for it. Carriageworks just been given lifeline to beat Covid19. Today, the NSW govt guaranteed Carriageworks a 10-year lease over its site and five years funding. https://www.smh.com.au//carriageworks-saved-as-lease-and-f

08.01.2022 5 September - ewaste, old clothes, towels, all your lockdown clean up. Dont binski it, recycle it. Thank you City Of Sydney for your commitment to improving sustainability. https://news.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au//recycle-it-saturday-

08.01.2022 The number going down. Fingers crossed.

08.01.2022 Final day for submissions into City of Sydney public consultation. Please support the encouragement of cycling-as-transport in Sydney.

07.01.2022 Crossing railway parade feels so much safer now theres no left turn from Erskineville Rd. With kids on bikes or scooters or holding a pram, that steep bit with cars whizzing by literally cm away was always nerve-wracking. The Bridge is a Transport NSW asset so though we've tried to get it widened in past in the name of safety for the increasing foot-traffic and bikes there's a blackhole for any response and no one going to let us turn the bridge into a one-way ! The No Left... turn from Erskineville Rd is the result of City of Sydney finally building a separated cycleway linking Erskineville to South Eveleigh and Redfern along Railway Pde/ Henderson Rd, creating another cycle link and helping get bikes off the foot path. There will be some parking spaces lost but these are untimed parking not resident parking. The new bike path was one of 6 new bike paths for Sydney that also includes one for Sydney Park Road, these announced at the end of May by the City of Sydney as Covid19 infrastructure and a way to value-add to city life for locals and support a healthy city. Cars currently go way too fast along Henderson Rd even though there is a speed restriction so we're hoping roundabouts at every intersection will go in too.Cycle paths keep cyclists safe but also add to the community amenity - you always see advertising for houses / apartments in the area promoting the liveability/ walkability of great cul-de-sacs, bike paths and green open spaces. No value is ever placed on Cars Going Fast Down Wide Roads Free of Pedestrians. There are huge advantages of a bike over a car for short distance journeys in the city, not least personal health but also city health. It gets you door to door like an Uber does but with more enjoyment :-) The other cycle paths for City of Sydney are - CBD: Pitt Street north, between King Street and Reiby Place - Dunning Avenue in Rosebery - Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street in Surry Hills - Pyrmont Bridge Road - Also proposed is a cycle path along Oxford Street and King Street in Newtown The bikepaths are a trial for 12 months. In addition to the new cycleways, footpaths in high-traffic areas of the CBD are also being temporarily widened to help with social distancing with Newtown, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Potts Point, Ultimo and Glebe also being prioritised for extra walking space. 06.01.2022 Yah Victoria. The numbers going Down Down Down. Almost there. Stick with it.

06.01.2022 Broadway alert for Covid19

05.01.2022 Quite a good one for the libertarians, the folk who are happy to wear a seatbelt rather than be fined.

05.01.2022 Does Marie Konde have anything to say about cars, the costly object that could quite likely be the thing cluttering your life and happiness. Is the perceived convenience of a car in the city, when you live a few minutes walk from a train station, from bus routes, really more beneficial than the zen and calm that the slower pace of walking, training, biking or Ubering gives. Every bit of literature shows that walking is great for mental health, physical health, social cohesion.... In an Uber you don't have to find a park when you visit your friend in Bondi or Glebe or Haberfield. On a train you don't have to navigate traffic and find a park in your own suburb when you return. Is a car really giving you happiness? Are the benefits of a car worth more than that churning annoyance in your stomach and angry thoughts when thinking about the new bike path on Henderson Rd? Is the anger at cyclists and people parking in the free car spaces or reduced car spaces that you thought were yours worth it? If everyone stopped driving would the social anger dissipate and that person, walking on the road because they can, make you smile instead? Where is Marie Konde when you need her.

04.01.2022 Hardly a discount. If you order through Ubereats it takes from the restaurant a fee of 35% (now 30% with its very *cough cough* discount) of the total order (oh yes, drinks and rice and bread included) PLUS 100% of the delivery fee you pay. That is, your order $70 of food from your local restuarant through UberEats and the restaurant gets just $45 that has to cover food, staff, rent, insurances etc. And, how much do you think the delivery bikerider gets? Not enough to call it anything but slave labour. You can shift where your $$$ go by buying local, phoning or using their own website and using your own legs to pick up (think of it like Free Gym and Mental Health therapy). https://www.smh.com.au//restaurants-go-it-alone-despite-de

03.01.2022 Never forget inner westies, that where St Peters overpass now is, the NSW govt (Labor at the time) approved the origins of a Sydney coal seam gasfield. It was witness statements like this from QLD, the experience and diminishing of quality of life of living next to a gasfield - 24hr flaring, a compressor station, health issues from the methane, bore failure - that mobilised the powerful community campaign by inner west Sydney to stop it.

02.01.2022 Let's keep our distance in check. Get tested if you got a sniffle. No pub crawls. Take-away food if you got to go out. Come on Sydney. We got this.

02.01.2022 The ever hopeful Charlie Brown hopes this time what's on promise will occur, that there will be no random behaviour.

01.01.2022 In 2017, despite the City of Sydney (CoS) council being opposed to the project, the NSW government approved the concept plans or 400 apartments on the old fedex site on Euston Rd edge of Sydney Park More recently the developer, Maxida International, made a further application to significantly increase the heights by up to 47% that was rejected by CoS due to the impacts on Sydney Park and the fact that the detailed plans differed greatly from the original concept. Now the dev...eloper is taking CoS to court. We already lost over a hectare of Sydney Park to the WestCONnex behemoth. More here: https://friendsoferskineville.org//update-on-one-sydney-p/ See more
