14.01.2022 Indigenous people have used a large variety of plant, animal and mineral materials to treat or relieve a very wide range of ailments, such as preparations to heal burns, to relieve pain and coughs, to act as antihistamines for stings and bites, and many other uses. During their thousands of years of living in the rainforests of North Queensland, the Ngadjonji have acquired an intimate knowledge of the plants and animals which shared their world. 10.01.2022 Indigenous Australians were well aware of the stars and planets and used their observations of them to signify important seasonal events. They also had their own names for stars and constellations and there are Creation stories associated with them. This story is identified with the Boorong people of western Victoria. 08.01.2022 This beautiful artwork depicts leaves of the Kurrajong tree which is used for bush medicine. Bush Medicine is an Australian Aboriginal people’s traditional practice. It was believed that evil spirits caused any illness without an obvious explanation and these would be treated by the tribe’s medicine man who would specialise in spiritual cures. Women from the Anmatyerre region gather the leaves to be used in traditional bush medicines. The leaves are boiled and mashed with ani...mal fats (emu or kangaroo) making a medicinal poultice or paste which can last for many months. The paste is then applied to the skin to heal a multitude of afflictions such as bites, wounds, skin infections, rashes, skin cancer and the like. The leaves are also steeped in hot water to make an infusion, or healing tea. 07.01.2022 In our western idea of time, we tend to think of one year following the next, rather than the seasons repeating year after year. Indigenous seasonal calendars are presented in a different way to western calendars in a number of ways. Take a look at ERTHSCOUT's Indigenous Science Knowledge Hub and use the search bar to search ACARA Curriculum codes. www.erthscout.com.au

07.01.2022 Volcanoes in Victoria reveal fresh evidence of eruptions 37,000 years ago. Thousands of years after the eruption of Budj Bim, a complex aquaculture system was... set up by the Gunditjmara people in the rocky landscape to harvest eels.
