20.01.2022 This is important: we've had reports that certain venues are sending out emails and other messages asking musicians to play for free. This is not on. While ever...yone is struggling to get through the crisis and all attempts to get music and businesses up and running again are welcome, we have to make the point that musicians need to be treated the same as all workers: if a venue is opening, serving drinks and food, they'll be paying staff. If they also want to put on safe gigs, the musicians deserve to be paid a fair fee. Musicians Australia members have a simple and fair plan to fix the music industry: fees for all gigs; make gigs safe; and no undercutting. www.musiciansaustralia.org.au

03.01.2022 RIGHTEOUS LUKA NOT SHARING One of the few, true troubadours, Luka Bloom has taken a stand for all the right reasons citing, when you experience music via a streaming service, you are paying that service provider, not the musician and that is precisely the point, now more than ever, during lockdown, at a time when musicians cannot earn money by performing live, you can go to the musician direct and buy from them. Seek out your favourite musicians and support them directly. Buy their songs, from them. Thank you

02.01.2022 Streaming services (like Spotify) make millions selling music whilst only paying a tiny fraction to songwriters (like $0.04) each time a song gets played. At this rate, a songwriter can only make $10,000 if their song gets streamed 1 million times. But that’s a lot of streams and realistically most indie artists will get around 1000 streams and that means the songwriter will only get $400. So you can see how this deal is going down for songwriters. It’s great for Spotify (re...ally great!) and let’s also consider that it costs $2000 on average to record a song professionally in a recording studio using pro musicians and then there’s the added cost of making a film clip to go along with the song. So you can see how unfair this deal is, really, while streamers like Spotify make millions, the person who created the song makes next to nothing. This petition is asking for 1 cent per stream, which is not a lot to ask. Please sign the petition, to help make songwriting more viable in the digital age.
