25.01.2022 Mallacoota Beauty

24.01.2022 After a busy couple of weeks and long weekend, it was great to unwind and get back to nature with my family. On Monday we ventured into the Mitchell River Natio...nal Park and trekked the 5k Den of Nargun loop walk. What a beautiful spot! We are so lucky living in East Gippsland with so much natural beauty- the bush, rivers, beaches, lakes & mountains - we have it all! The Den of Nargun is a place of great cultural significance to the Gunaikurnai people, especially the women, and is part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail: www.batalukculturaltrail.com.au

22.01.2022 Did you know there is a fabulous walk over Screw Creek up to the Bluff at Inverloch? Its an easy walk starting from the end of the foreshore caravan park throu...gh the bush skirting Anderson Inlet. Weve done a lot of work over the years to get rid of Spartina from Anderson Inlet. Spartina is an invasive weed the was used in the early 1900s to reclaim the mudflats for farmland. Spartina infestations smother critical feeding and breeding habitats for birds and fish, as well as choking intertidal mudflats. Visit our website for more

22.01.2022 My young nephew spotted this down at Bastion Point yesterday (Friday 8th Jan) in the rock pools. It’s a Glaucus Atlanticus (reference posted below, worth readin...g!). If you do see one, don’t touch it as it has a painful and potentially dangerous sting. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaucus_atlanticus

02.01.2022 Fraser Island #islandsofgippsland Fraser Island is one of a group of three islands in the Gippsland Lakes, at the eastern end of Lake King close to Lakes Entran...ce. Its Gunaikurnai name was kawar (meaning unknown). Nearby Bell’s Point was kwaranuk, sometimes written as quaren-nook, meaning meeting place. In Smythe’s 1849 coastal surveys CS 3A and CS 50 Fraser Island is named McAuliff Island, this was still in official use by the Fisheries Dept in 1889. It appears on some maps today and is the postal address of the Fraser Island Resort. It was also unofficially named Gypsy (sometimes Gipsy) Island. The name Gypsy comes from an early settler William Coulson whose black curly hair led to his nickname Gypsy. Coulson worked for P. C. Buckley at Prospect. In the 1860s Buckley stationed him in a hut on the Boole Poole Peninsula helping in driving cattle and transporting goods by boat. He later worked for Charles Marshall at Marshall’s Captain Cook Inn on the Nicholson at Sarsfield where he sailed Marshall’s boat the Sarsfield to Sale for supplies. In 1868 when Charles Marshall retired to Fraser Island to farm pigs and garden, Charles Coulson and his wife Georgina (Elizabeth) moved with him. In 1874 Marshall was ill and Coulson’s stepson John Sandford in an epic effort rowed him to Sale for treatment. Marshall died in Sydney in 1874. His estate went to his executor, Frederick Drevermann of Bairnsdale who never lived on Fraser Island. William and Elizabeth Coulson continued to live on Fraser Island. Elizabeth died and was buried there in 1878. William Coulson died at Cunninghame in 1883 and was said to be buried at the foot of Roadknights Hill. The McMahons of neighbouring Rigby Island leased part of Fraser Island from 1893 to 1905 as an extension to their dairy farm. In 1905 the freehold and leasehold was acquired by Frank Stuart and the history since then is described in Helen Martin’s earlier post. See more
