25.01.2022 Today is Neighbour Day. Research shows, those who have strong relationships within their communities and with their neighbours are more likely to help one another and have better outcomes when faced with emergencies. That’s why Victoria State Emergency Service and Emergency Services Foundation is supporting Neighbour Day an annual celebration of community with the aim of fostering strong personal connections that last the whole year-round. ... By looking out for one another, we can continue to create safer communities - together.

18.01.2022 If someone is not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. ESF asked Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman of Forest Fire Management Victoria how he knows when he's not OK.

17.01.2022 This week ESF CEO Siusan MacKenzie hosted an insightful conversation with Dr Lisa Pell from Phoenix Australia, Dr Christopher Groot, lead researcher for the SANE Stigma Report Card, and Cliff Overton, a CFA volunteer, about the complexity of mental health stigma. We know that self stigma prevents many emergency service people from seeking help early enough to give themselves the best chance of recovery. ESF is undertaking a research project to understand why that is.

16.01.2022 Losing a team member: Lessons learned on leading in the aftermath of tragedy was the topic of a conversation ESF hosted today with Lex de Man, now CEO at Police Legacy Victoria, and Chris Hardman, Chief Officer at DELWP Forest Fire. They shared their vast experience and wisdom of leading through such tragedy in a very personal and thought provoking way. You can catch what they had to say here.

15.01.2022 Last night, ESF hosted fascinating presentations from Greg Dean, Ti Hokins, Marcus Warner and Dennis Smith. Each was a recipient of a 2019 ESF Scholarship, and shared their research around mental health and wellbeing in emergency management. Bravo to all! A mindfulness practitioner himself, Dennis started thinking. What if our emergency management leaders could benefit from the reduced stress and anxiety and improved cognitive performance that mindfulness brings, in literally... a few minutes?... https://esf.com.au//uplo/2020/04/2019_Dennis_Smith_MFB.pdf Register.Find.Unite is a system used by @RedCrossAU during crises and disasters to locate and reunite people. Ti asked us to think about the people behind the system taking those calls. How do we best look after their mental health and wellbeing? https://esf.com.au//2020/04/2019_Tiana_Hokins_Red_Cross.pdf Moving into a statewide police wellbeing role, Greg gained a helicopter view of the organisation that he wasn’t ready to accept. He knew that more needed to be done. But how best to tailor prevention services for police and emergency services? https://esf.com.au//uplo/2020/04/2019_Greg_Dean_VicPol.pdf When a Frenchman he had never met reached out to VicSES Bright Unit volunteer Marcus, wanting to discuss a wilderness rescue he had been witness to, Marcus wondered, what happens to the witnesses? Should we be helping them too? https://esf.com.au///2020/04/2019_Marcus_Warner_VicSES.pdf Congrats to you all, and as Siusan McKenzie said, I'm sure you've inspired many, and made your organisations proud. Thank you for your contribution to building better mental health for the sector.

11.01.2022 If you feel like something's not quite the same with someone you know - trust your gut instinct and ask "Are you OK?". ESF asked Tony Walker of Ambulance Victoria how he knows when he's not ok.

08.01.2022 Work-related factors are anything in the design or management of work that can affect an employee's mental health. If work-related factors are not managed well, there is an increased risk of work-related stress, which may lead to physical injury, mental injury or even both at the same time. No one wants that. ESF brings the Victorian emergency services sector together to address these factors so we can be better together.... #ESFbettertogether #mentalhealthmatters #thanks2you #ESFlearningnetwork Victoria Police Ambulance Victoria CFA (Country Fire Authority) MFB (Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade) Victoria State Emergency Service ESTA 000 Life Saving Victoria American Red Cross Bushfire Recovery Victoria

07.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day but every day we need to prioritise a little self-care to nourish our wellbeing - especially as we deal with COVID-19 restrictions. 1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental illness annually, yet many don’t seek help because of stigma. This week ESF began a research project with Phoenix Australia to better understand what stops people in the emergency management sector seeking help early when they need it.

05.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the death of ESF life member Rhys Maggs, former CEO of VicSes. Rhys was a great advocate for the ESF and in particular the scholarship program. He was excited about our new direction and we thank him sincerely for his absolute commitment to the sector. RIP Rhys.

04.01.2022 It's a different way to attend a conference. No catch ups over a cuppa around an exhibition but nevertheless it works, and day one of the Emergency Management Conference was a great success thanks to all the speakers. I heard the word collaboration used often today. And that is just what ESF does in bringing the sector together to foster innovation.
