25.01.2022 There was some "Exciting" news high lighted the other day. Well here is what some of us are getting excited about. The Esk RSL Sub Branch has gone through some major changes in recent times. Due to the on going COVID 19 health situation the Sub Branch suspended normal operations indefinitely. After many Executive Committee meetings and communication to members, it was decided to change the operation of the Sub Branch completely. Over the last couple of months we have dispose...d of surplus items including furniture, kitchen equipment and various other major items. During this period a dedicated few began a total reconfiguration of the Diggers Hall. As of this moment we now have a Drop In Centre/Welfare area and "Board Room" where we previously had the kitchen. The office has been slightly reconfigured and now work is well under way establishing a Military History Display area and merchandise shop (a "New Museum" is taking shape in Esk). The Military History Display will cover Sub Branch history, Light Horse involvement in the surrounding areas, World Wars 1&2, Korea, Malaya/Borneo, Vietnam, Peace Makers, Peace Keepers, Iraq, Afghanistan and various other recent conflicts to which our Defence Forces have deployed It is hoped to have the total project completed early 2021. We propose to operate the drop in centre one day a week on Wednesdays and have it open for coffee or tea and a chat. Once fully operational, we welcome Sub Branch members, serving and ex service members of the Defence Force and visitors to Esk and surrounds. Until that time, if the door is open, pop in and say hello to those working on the project and have a look at the project as it progresses. The following photos give some idea of the project's progress. 1&2 are of the old kitchen area, now drop in centre and board room. 3 is part of the Light Horse dedicated display. 4 is the ongoing work in the previous bar, now being transformed into a merchandise shop.

24.01.2022 Things are certainly moving along in the right direction for our new venture. We have been able to sell all of our large kitchen equipment. 2 fridges, bain maree, turbo oven, gas oven, stainless steel benches, dish washer and glass water. We are now clear to have our general garage sale on Saturday. A huge thank you to The Esk Bowls Club, Esk Fruit Shop, The Esk Grand Hotel, The Toogoolawah Show Society, The Esk CWA and numerous smaller contributors to our endeavours prior to Saturday. All proceeds from sales will be used in setting up our Military History Display/Museum, Welfare Gathering/Meeting room, revamped office and a small merchandise area. Heaps of crockery, cooking utensils and bric a brac bargains available on Saturday commencing 8am at The Diggers Hall 187 Ipswich St., Esk.

24.01.2022 Anther morning done. Carpet now laid in the "Gift Shop/ Merchandise" area. Beersheba wall coming along with our ORIGINAL Battle Map of 5th Light Horse operations during November 1916, now installed adjacent to it and a try out of the display tables. Also the slouch has new plumes, now to fit it into the Light Horse display.

24.01.2022 The Esk RSL Sub Branch has been unable to conduct it's usual commemorative and fellowship activities this year due mainly to the ongoing health matters and retirement of some of our older members. With major changes to the situation unlikely to occur in the near future, the Executive members of the Sub Branch met recently to discuss the situation. In order to continue to meet the overall objectives of the RSL, it was decided to reconfigure the Diggers Hall into a Meeting Ven...ue/small fellowship place, History Room, Research Library, Military Display (museum style), Welfare Information/Interview area and larger office. A decision was also reached to dispose of, by Tender and or Sale (possible garage style sale), surplus catering items, kitchen eqpt., including a turbo oven, 3 door commercial refrigerator, 4 tray bain marie with trolley, stainless steel kitchen benches (on wheels) with racks and slide in containers and a number of tables and chairs, as well as bric-a-brac items. All proceeds from the sale of these items and eqpt., would then be utilised to fund the reconfiguration of the Diggers Hall. THE INITIAL GARAGE SALE WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY 1Oth October COMMENCING 8am at THE DIGGERS HALL 187 Ipswich St Esk. The sale is open to the general public and trade organisations showing interest in the commercial kitchen eqpt. Sale is by CASH or Elect Funds Transfer ONLY. EFTPOS NOT AVAILBLE. It must be stressed, that the Sub Branch is in a stable financial position, has a very solid membership base (we could do with more of course) and WILL CONTINUE TO HOLD IT'S CHARTER. The Sub Branch IS NOT CLOSING DOWN OR GOING AWAY. All enquiries should be directed to The Sub Branch President 0403003601 Or Sub Branch Secretary 0488309206

20.01.2022 To round off Remembrance Day, I was privileged to host the Esk Guides at our local Cenotaph this evening. The girls would normally visit prior to ANZAC Day, but due to the COVID 19 restrictions of this year we had the delayed opportunity to get together this evening. The group also left a couple of their own hand made poppy offerings at the Cenotaph. Great to share stories with you again girls.

16.01.2022 Monday August 24th 2020, the 10th anniversary of The Battle of Derapet. Much has been and will be written about this engagement addressing casualties suffered and awards issued for bravery. The following is a short reminder of the significance of that day in Australiam Military history, copied from a written history of the battle on Wikipdeia.... "The Battle of Derapet was fought near the village of Derapet in the Tangi Valley in Deh Rahwod, Orzgn Province, southern Afghanistan, between a combined Australian Army and Afghan National Army patrol and Taliban forces on 24 August 2010. Australian forces had only recently taken over responsibility for the area. The combined coalition patrol included 20 Australians and 20 Afghan National Army troops. The small Australian force from 1st Mentoring Task Force (MTF-1) based in Tarin Kowt included two sections of dismounted infantry and two ASLAV-25 guncars and was tasked with a fighting patrol to find and inflict damage on insurgent forces known to be in the area".

13.01.2022 This morning, our President Charlie Elwell and Secretary Stephen Bird, visited our patron and WW2 veteran Jack O'keefe to present him with a Thank You For Your Service Certificate and Commemorative Medallion on the 75th anniversary of VP Day. When asked what he was doing on this day 75 years ago. Jack said, "I was in a boat coming back from a fishing trip, I was on leave. When I rang up to see what to do, I was told to go and have a drink to celebrate. So I did". Thanks for your service "Jack".

13.01.2022 Apologies. Due to the weather change we have shut shop early today.

12.01.2022 First few pics from our small Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony. Thank you to those who gathered, participated and assisted with presenting our ceremony.

09.01.2022 Update photos of the project. Still a long way to go. Beersheeba Wall (ongoing) Display tables for photo albums and record books (on going), a part prototype of our future display cabinets.

08.01.2022 An Open Letter to The Local Community. During these exceptional times many plans are cancelled or suspended and simple words might not seem to express the heartfelt message behind them: "Thank You" is a prime example. These two words sometimes do not convey the full extent of the gratitude intended. The Esk RSL Sub Branch receives much needed support from the broader community - individuals, service clubs, local groups, businesses, local government and other government organi...sations in both cash and kind. These forms of support enable us to serve our veteran community, conduct commemorative functions and maintain the resources used in those services. Together, we have forged a close Esk Family Partnership. Together, we form a very Special Community and in these times, "Staying apart keeps us together". The Esk RSL Sub Branch is still operating and active. So in the simplest and truly heartfelt words - THANK YOU! We will get together again one day. Stay safe and well. See more

03.01.2022 Further to the previous post on the Battle of Derapet, below is a short post from one of our own in Esk who was involved in the engagement. A more detailed story will be in the next issue of our member's newsletter. The Battle of Derapet "Afghanistan 2010On 24 August 2010 Australian and Afghan National Army soldiers were involved in intense fighting with Taliban forces in the village of Derapet, in western Uruzgan Province. The engagement would later become known as the Ba...ttle of Derapet. The combined Australian/Afghan patrol was initially contacted by a large Taliban force of 90-100 insurgents. During the almost four hour battle, an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and other assets provided fire support before the combined patrol broke contact after inflicting heavy casualties on the Taliban. One Australian, Lance Corporal Jared ‘Crash’ MacKinney, was killed in the fighting. For his actions on the day, Corporal Dan Keighran, was later awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia". RIP "Crash"- brothers by choice.
