24.01.2022 The Great Divide: "For much of Australian history both the countryside and the city were linked tightly. Each had a strong sense of how important were their economic links. In the cities, when the price of wool was high, the big emporium, the suburban bicycle shop and every other small business knew this good news. They read it in their cash registers and profited from it. The city once rode partly on the sheep's back. Now these economic links are less visible and knowledge of them is lower." A very interesting discussion with historian Geoffrey Blainey about the country-city divide, both historically and in present times. https://www.abc.net.au//boyerlectures/lecture-3-th/3500858

22.01.2022 Rail motors, most of us rode in them back in the day when the whole 6000 miles of WA Government Railway was accessible Today, the diesels run to Bunbury and Ka...lgoorlie, that's it. Passengers once could travel to Meekatharra, Denmark, Esperance, Geraldton, Busselton and many more long forgotten little towns and sidings. Lots of those little towns still have their stations and plenty to offer those wishing to visit by train whether it be for lunch, sight seeing or an over nighter. We are off to Newdegate, Kulin, Hyden, Esperance and more Wednesday for a few days and as I looked at destinations, I thought how good would it be to have the opportunity of travelling by rail? A weekend run to Mullewa, Perenjori and Mingenew for the wildflowers, an over nighter to Dowerin for the field days a couple of nights in Kalgoorlie for the horse racing, whale watching from Esperance, the around the houses races in Albany or a romantic weekend in Katanning just because it's there? Maybe when purchasing the new rail cars for the Australind, a couple of spares could be bought in the name of tourism?
20.01.2022 FORTY YEARS AGO TODAY Esperance made international news when the Skylab space station crashed to earth after seven years in orbit. NASA was unable to control it...s descent nor determine where it would land. As 'Skylab watches' parties were held in the US, just after midnight on July 12 1979, the doomed spacecraft crossed the Indian Ocean out of control towards Esperance. As it broke up a trail of debris was left across the town and the surrounding areas. Ever wondered what Skylab debris looked like? These photographs from the State Library catalogue (slwa_b5552975), show debris from Skylab on the back of a truck in Kalgoorlie. Pieces were brought to Kalgoorlie for scientific testing. By the look of these it's was very fortunate that no one was injured! Are you from the Nullarbor, eastern goldfields or Esperence? What stories do you have of the Skylab crash 40 years ago? We would love you to post them here.
20.01.2022 How fascinating!
17.01.2022 The sandy part of the Esplanade shoreline that forms the heart shape in the bay was once referred to as 'Hannett's Point', named after Benjamin Hannett and his wife, Caroline, who lived there for many years. Hannett's Point would become the eventual location of the Esperance Tanker Jetty. Read more: https://www.esperanceexpress.com.au//the-tanker-jettys-he/
