24.01.2022 A new survey suggests more than three in five Australians believe working from home will become the norm, even when the coronavirus pandemic has passed.
24.01.2022 Only two new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the state over the weekend, suggesting the disease was under control in WA, Mr Cook said.
22.01.2022 The restrictions we have had to put in place during this crisis have been significant and disruptive, and the limitations on seeing family and friends have been... particularly difficult for many. But the overwhelming majority of Western Australians have done the right thing, and it has paid off so far. Our State has seen remarkable results in the fight against COVID-19 - and while that fight will continue for some time yet, those results mean we can now cautiously adjust some of the most extreme of those restrictions. As of tomorrow, 27 April, based on expert health advice, the two person limit on non-work indoor and outdoor gatherings will be adjusted, with the limit rising to 10 people. Additionally, the list of acceptable activities to do away from home has been expanded slightly. Everyone should continue to practise appropriate social distancing and stay home except for: Shopping for what you need, such as food or other necessary supplies Medical or health care needs, including compassionate requirements Exercise, including outdoor personal training without shared equipment Training or University study, where remote learning is unavailable Childcare or school Work Non-contact recreational activities such as private picnics in the park, fishing, boating, hiking and camping all in compliance with travel restrictions and the new 10-person rule Home opens and display village openings, with appropriate record keeping and hygiene practices in place, and in compliance with the 10-person rule A maximum of 10 people will be allowed at weddings (an increase from the five person limit), funerals, outdoor personal training (no shared equipment), home opens and display village inspections as part of these changes. The new 10-person rule aligns Western Australia with South Australia. The two-person rule was adopted in WA going further than what was recommended at the time in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19. All other restrictions will remain in place for now, and all public playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment to remain closed. These decisions are based on the best medical advice in the country and as outlined by National Cabinet restrictions could be in place for six months, but subject to regular review. Thank you again for doing such a great job so far. Although these changes are small, I hope they will help many Western Australians get through this difficult period.
21.01.2022 Such surgeries could resume at an earlier date than had previously been thought possible because the federal government has secured more personal protection equipment for healthcare workers.
15.01.2022 Southern Ports Port of Esperance experienced its biggest month in two years after trading 1,230,673 tonnes in April. A combined 79,044 tonnes of fertiliser, oil/petroleum, sulphur and other materials were imported, while 1,151,628 tonnes of grain, iron ore, spodumene and other products were exported. Southern Ports Chief Executive Officer Steve Lewis said these trade figures were indicative of strong mining and agriculture sectors within the region.... The last time we saw this much trade going through the Esperance Port was in April 2018, Mr Lewis said. The Goldfields-Esperance region is home to thriving mining and agricultural industries, and April trade through the Esperance Port was supported by an increase in iron ore and grain exports. April saw an 86% increase in overall trade from the same time last year, and a 100% and 86% increase in iron ore and grain respectively. We had twice as many iron ore ships and three more grain ships come through the port this April than in April 2019.
15.01.2022 Contractor fined $11,000 over telehandler incident An experienced equipment contractor Daniel Malcolm Parker was today fined $11,000 in the Esperance Magistrates Court for failing to provide a safe working environment after a telehandler rolled over and endangered two workers he was supervising. The incident, which occurred at the Ravensthorpe nickel mine on 11 January 2017, involved Mr Parker and four of his employees attempting to move a pipe assembly weighing more than thr...ee-tonne by slinging it to the telehandler’s headboard. When one of the slings broke, the load shifted causing the vehicle to roll on to its side. A number of factors contributed to the incident; the worker who slung the load did not hold an appropriate high-risk licence, the slings were in poor condition and the telehandler operator was inexperienced and had not been trained to use the vehicle as a crane. FQM Australia Nickel which operates the mine had contracted Southern Engineering and Agriculture (SEA) to remove and then reinstate piping around a tailings dam. Mr Parker is a partner at SEA, an Esperance-based family business. Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety Acting Director Mines Safety Christina Folley said the rollover could have been far more serious. It was only luck that saved the vehicle operator and a worker in the area from being injured during the rollover. The telehandler was not rated to lift the pipe assembly or equipped to lift suspended loads, and this exposed Mr Parker and his employees to unacceptable hazards. Incidents like these are an important and constant reminder - mining operators should make safety an absolute priority by putting in place the required procedures and protections to safeguard workers.
15.01.2022 Esperance locals will benefit from state-of-the-art training facilities with construction set to commence on South Regional TAFE's new $18.34 million Esperance campus. Strategically located on land adjacent to the secondary school oval, the new campus will provide local secondary school students with easy access to vocational education and training (VET) programs as part of their education. The project will also support the local building and construction industry to maintain... a skilled workforce and give greater certainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is anticipated construction of the new campus will start in June and is expected to open to students in Semester 1, 2022. Students will relocate from the current campus on Pink Lake Road to the new campus once it opens. The new buildings will include three trade workshops for training in construction, metal engineering and auto/machinery industries and specialist facilities for childcare, institutional and home care for NDIS and aged care training. Tjaltjraak, a local Aboriginal organisation, has been consulted throughout the design process and has been instrumental in identifying training needs, areas of cultural significance, landscape design and will also be involved in providing the public art. Under the Western Australian Industry Participation Strategy (WAIPS), EMCO Building will generate local economic benefits and opportunities for local industry, plus job opportunities including apprenticeships and traineeships. The State Government will closely monitor the number of regional contractors employed through the construction phase and EMCO Building’s WAIPS commitment to ensure local benefit. A number of measures have already been implemented to maximise local business participation including requiring the shortlisted tenderers to advertise packages of work via local media and the Chamber of Commerce, and offering incentives to tenderers that engage Aboriginal businesses or employ Aboriginal people.
12.01.2022 Trials to test off-road capability of modified fire trucks Trials of modified firefighting trucks have begun in Esperance this week to test the performance of enhanced safety measures including different tyres and in-cab equipment. Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Assistant Commissioner Asset Management Brad Delavale said DFES had been working closely with the Shire of Esperance and volunteer brigades to improve the all-terrain capability of its firefighting ...fleet. The Shire of Esperance’s unique terrain of sandy dunes, dense bushland and soft farmland soil due to changing farming practices has posed challenges when responding to bushfires, Assistant Commissioner Delavale said. The aim of these trials is to identify and test innovations that will enhance the firefighting fleets’ ability to respond to difficult to access areas. A DFES 3.4 Urban Tanker has been fitted with a Central Tyre Inflation feature to allow firefighters to control the tyre pressure from within the cab while moving. This provides an opportunity to reduce the amount of time it takes firefighters to deflate and inflate tyres which will improve safety and increase mobility at an incident. A 4.4 Broadacre Tanker is also being fitted with Super Single tyres to assess their suitability on and off-road, particularly on softer soil. Assistant Commissioner Delavale said the trials would be monitored closely, and if successful could be implemented into WA’s firefighting fleet. Safety is our top priority, so if these vehicle modifications mean we can better meet the operational needs of volunteers at the same time as improving their safety and the safety of the broader community, that’s a great outcome, he said. Under the Department’s Operational Fleet Project, volunteer and career firefighters are now much more closely engaged in the design and delivery of our operational fleet, helping to ensure appliances are tailored to the needs of frontline personnel. The Operational Fleet Project provides an opportunity for this trial to explore more immediate options for potentially enhancing vehicle mobility for the Esperance region. The trial will be facilitated by the Bushfire Fleet Mobility Working Group, which is a joint initiative between DFES, Shire of Esperance and local Bush Fire Brigades. Esperance Shire President Ian Mickel said the working group had been a great opportunity to bring the region’s bushfire stakeholders under one roof to discuss important local issues. We’ve had some very constructive conversations over the past few months, which has led to the vehicle modifications that target our local landscape, Mr Mickel said. We look forward to reviewing the outcomes of the trials and will continue to work closely with DFES and local volunteers to improve protecting our community from bushfires.

04.01.2022 Esperance Detectives have charged a 54-year-old man after an incident in Castletown yesterday. Around 10am, Esperance Police were conducting patrols when they spotted a vehicle of interest, a white Toyota Landcruiser. It will be alleged police attempted to stop the vehicle on Goldfields Road and a short evade police incident occurred before the vehicle stopped at a home on Westmacott Street.... When police approached the driver side of the vehicle, it will be further alleged the accused was armed with a loaded firearm when he exited the vehicle, pointed the firearm at a police officer and threatened the officers.
