23.01.2022 They requested it so we delivered! Today's drills with our beginners focused on the rebola - traveling, direction, contrast in speeds - so our combo of the day was just filled with them we love our hips --- Our mini term has ended, but keep an eye out because we're planning some stuff over the Christmas holidays

23.01.2022 Totally vibing on the music today We also focused on working those hips particularly in the samba, and the combo was to create smooth moves on both sides of the body (so we kept it simple so we could swap sides). Also got them to push their speed with the samba! This is our beginner class. I'm just blown away ... 23.01.2022 Our wonderful instructors are prepping for classes back this Tuesday!

22.01.2022 Drill time fun for those playing at home Tips 1. This move comes from the twist at the hips - the leg flick is the flourish for the strong hip energy 2. It operates on the samba triplet (1,2,3). Start with an easy pace to get the rhythm and the movement sitting comfortably in the body, then gradually speed it up. The speed is too fast when it feels out of control, pull it back a step from there and practice in that revised speed a bit longer.... 3. Maintain your posture - pull up, feel your height. Is there a drill that you always come back to? Lately I've been rediscovering some old favourites. Fancy pants fun stuff like the one above is always cool, but nothing beats the basics

22.01.2022 YIPPEEE! Classes back tonight at 6:30 PM! See you there! Head to the Facebook event page for further information: https://facebook.com/events/s/beginners-course/227064275246698/?ti=as

Keep an eye out for information, stay safe and stay healthy. Looking forward to connecting with our friends and our bodies through samba again soon

19.01.2022 Super excited and satisfied with today's learning. @malandro_julio created an introductory intensive to Samba no Malandro for me. We looked at the history and character of the Malandro, the mechanics of movement (especially the differences between the Passista style that we teach in classes in Darwin and this one), musicality and interpretation, and more Portuguese terminology. I'm absolutely fascinated by what's possible with Malandro - such freedom of movement and expressio...n. Very excited about the continued exploration of this - for men and women Huge thanks to Julio for this. He teaches the Malandro with @labomba_latindance. I will be feeling it tomorrow

19.01.2022 Hey everyone! Erin here (owner and director of Espírito do Samba) Dancing is something that plays a key role in both our physical health and our mental health. As we've had to cancel our classes in the interest of our community's health we thought it vitally important that we share as many opportunities for dancing AT HOME as possible. Take a look at our friends who are sharing links to online classes including:... Mishel from Sambaliscious - live streaming classes and online courses in all levels of samba which is fantastic if you're just starting out or if you're experienced Sooz from Umbela Brasil who has provided a space for online classes in samba and other afro Brazilian styles from a range of schools around Australia and the world - an awesome opportunity to grow and learn from others! Find out how to link into these opportunities (and more as I discover them) on our Instagram story in the ONLINE CLASSES feature (see image below) or message for info. I will also be posting opportunities for dancing at home with an Espírito do Samba At Home Challenge for our students - more info in our STUDENT SOCIAL GROUP so come and join us for tips, tricks and encouragement! Thinking of you all and looking forward to seeing where you go in your dance journey. Keep in touch and if you have any questions please Facebook message or email us [email protected]

18.01.2022 Wowowow! What can we say, but how incredibly lucky we are to have such a beautiful samba community here! Three performances from our beginners, intermediate and advanced student groups and a solo from our director Liz, followed by a chance to relax together after the end of such an unpredictable year! We'll share the videos SOON! So proud of everyone and what we've learned and accomplished this year coming out of 2020 stronger and surrounded by community. #Samba #sambanopé #braziliansamba #whatsonindarwin #territoryproud

18.01.2022 I swore I'd share a section where the majority had the combo, so I guess it's my mistake front and centre *just keep dancing!* Tonight's workshop introduced head flicks, some wrist flicks and lots of legs. Lots for us to think about in 1 hour! We were inspired by "the cockroach" flick from Erin Gilbert (tell us if you can spot that move) and a beautiful little ditty we saw on Gisella Ferreira's stories ... 9 Vidas by Sergent Garcia

18.01.2022 For your edification and pleasure, see the routine performed by our dazzling beginner students at our Christmas party yesterday. Choreography and leadership supplied by our fabulous Stacey Anderson Music: No lo Trates So proud and impressed by the hard work of everyone involved! You absolutely shone!

18.01.2022 For those of you looking for some more dance to be involved in before we kick off the first term of 2021: we're organising a 'flashmob' for the Refugee World Cup on Aus Day. What's involved? Rehearsal on Saturday 23 January (1 hour to learn the dance), and performance on Tuesday 26 January (perform for the crowd, then pull them up to dance with us).... Cost? Free! It'll be bright, colourful, and sweaty. We guarantee the heat ;) Vamos sambar!! :D

18.01.2022 Drills to Kills delivered @seizethesamba took us through a day in the life of her private samba training and it was a sweat fest Each song focused on technique for a specific move/body part (for example in this video we had four minutes of hip swings at whatever pace/move we needed on that leg to stretch ourselves and improve our technique resulting in this recording of guided chaos that fit our individual needs and abilities).... Take home skills were how to run your own practice session outside of class. We love dancing together and if you make time to practice at home we can dig so much deeper when we gather. What's your favourite "at home" drill? Next open workshop is in January on the 5th!! Malandro styling coming up!

17.01.2022 Introducing Melanie! In this episode of the samba student spotlight we have Melanie. She joined us just this year, post-pandemic lockdown in the NT, so we can totally understand her compulsion to dance When asked why she started and what motivates her she answered: "Just out of nowhere I wanted to dance and try out what is it? And then as I researched about samba, I liked the meaning behind it. It's all about transformation and for me it's like a celebration of life. And ...what motivates me? I think moving makes me happy. Dancing makes me happy" What gets your juices flowing? #samba #sambanope #sambanopé #dance #dancingindarwin #darwindancers #braziliansamba #whatsonindarwin #cityofdarwin #bodypositivity #celebration #movement See more

16.01.2022 We've been loving dancing with you all! This term has only two more lessons left. Haven't had a chance to join us yet? No problem - casual visits are more than welcome. What's in store for you this week? Have a look at the description below.

16.01.2022 We realised it's been ages since we actually shared a video of us dancing!! Here's a little snippet of the latest new action from our Intermediate/Advanced dancers and our current choreography course. We'll be sharing this, a routine with our beginners, and a solo from our director at our Christmas party on Sunday afternoon 6th December. Everyone welcome to join us though we do have strictly limited numbers! Secure your spot by booking through the link (entry to party by donation) https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/espirito-do-samba-christmas

15.01.2022 It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas... :)

15.01.2022 Just before we sign off the gram to enjoy the Christmas festivities tomorrow (however they will happen for each of us), we'll leave you with our favourite moment of our Director, Liz's, solo performance of @denise.kayan 's choreography at the @rixkixarts Christmas party the other week. A powerful and beautiful enredo. We'll see you again before the year is out, but for now: ... "May tomorrow (the 25th of December) be a time of connection between us and our loved ones. May we also find many opportunities in the coming year to carve out space to celebrate ourselves and what we're capable of, especially on our own time within our minds - often our biggest enemy. If 2020 taught us anything, it's that 'we've got this!'" - Liz

14.01.2022 From our instructor Stacey: What an amazing last class to close off our term! So proud of how you all embraced the beginner routine with perseverance and passion. That's what I love about Espírito do Samba and samba no pé, it gives beautiful movements amongst brave, gorgeous women for us to express our individual femininity. Can't wait for next term . . . New term details coming soon! Keep an eye out for details! @ Espirito do Samba

13.01.2022 How do you pick a moment a to share? Let's start at the beginning! Huge thanks to DKF Events and The Beachfront Hotel for having us at their NYE party! 12.01.2022 It is with joy and sadness that we announce the change of Director for Espírito do Samba. Erin Gilbert founded Espírito do Samba in Darwin, Australia in 2017. Her passion and dedication for sharing and promoting Brazilian samba has meant that although she has left Darwin, samba remains. We are excited to announce that it will continue under the Direction of Liz Rogers. Some thoughts from our Directors: "‘Eu não nasci no samba, mas o samba nasceu em mimÉ corpo, é alma, é reli...gião’ Maria Rita ‘I wasn’t born in samba, but samba was born in meIt’s body, it’s soul, it’s religion’ Maria Rita I started teaching samba with a love for dancing, music and Brazilian culture. Little did I know of the amazing community that would eventuate from my little endeavour. I strove to build an inclusive, safe space where students from all walks of life could come and experience the energy exchanged when dancing samba no pé. Teaching became my passion; celebrating the small wins and the growth of my students over time. By dedicating myself to being the best teacher I could be, I was rewarded with the trust of a strong group of individuals who opened themselves up to learning, being vulnerable and growing in samba, often facing and embracing their toughest critics (themselves) head on. Every time I dance I feel passion and fire ignite and all those who have seen our Espírito do Samba dancers have witnessed the glow of that fire from within. Since moving interstate I have seen the community change and grow and I know that it is now time to see where it can go next. I will forever be a student of samba and culture, learning and growing. I am so grateful and honoured to have been a part of building this community and I cannot wait to see where it goes next under the direction of my beautiful friend Liz. A piece of my heart will forever remain with you, Espírito do Samba." - Erin Gilbert, Director 2017 - 2020 "By creating Espírito do Samba, Erin has left a strong legacy in Darwin, Australia. We will continue that legacy of fostering community, encouraging curiosity and at all times reminding people of the context: this is a Brazilian dance style from the African diaspora and it has made its way to the far north of Australia. Its call to power, strength, energy and joy has been embraced here by over 250 students since 2017, and I am one of them. I am beyond words at the trust being shown in me to continue building on this strong foundation created by Erin. This year has been a tricky one for us all. We do not know what the future will hold, but we will dance." - Liz Rogers, Director 2020

06.01.2022 At its heart, samba no pe is a freestyle dance form. It's all about freedom of expression, interpretation of music and personality. For most of us, freestyling isn't an easy thing to do (with or without an audience). We are trialing a regular open workshop for students of every level to explore different elements of freestyling in a safe, supportive and fun environment. The intention is that we all continue to build (and exercise) this very important improvisation muscle - if... you don't use it, you lose it. If you're new and wondering if you'll be able to keep up - the answer is yes! This isn't about learning a routine or a specific move, but bringing everything that you currently have and playing with it. Join Liz at this first workshop to play with tempo and contra-tempo, and end the class with the our favourite exchange of energy in a samba de roda. Questions? Feel free to email Liz at [email protected] FRIDAY FREESTYLE WORKSHOP 1 Cost: $15 Date: Friday 26 March Time: 6-7pm Location: Rix Kix Studios, 13/1 Caryota Crt, Coconut Grove

06.01.2022 CLASSES COMING BACK!! Keep an eye on this space for the announcement! LIMITED class numbers to maintain our students health and well-being so you'll need to get in quick! from our students' Studio Showcase last year

06.01.2022 Week 3 of our beginners mini term of Samba in the Sticks. We threw in a little bit of Samba no Malandro with our Samba no Pé for our combo of the day. Thanks to the wonderful @mayombemasai for the little groove we got to play with. Check him out for more fabulous dance and inspiration Just love the poses that I didn't prepare them for at the end if in doubt, make it look on purpose!! How great are they?! -- We have one official class left of this mini term next Saturday 10am, but we don't think it will be over! We'd love to keep dancing over the holidays. Send us a DM if you'd like more info about classes

06.01.2022 Happy Easter! Get moving this coming week with our friend Gabrielle SambaLife

06.01.2022 Join us tonight (or any Tuesday night over the next six weeks*) for Samba! We're offering two levels this term: Intermediate at 6.30pm and Beginners at 7.30pm. *Intermediate class not available on Tuesday 7th July only

05.01.2022 Drills that Kill is on tonight! 6.30pm at our studio in Coconut Grove see you SOON

05.01.2022 This little routine was created by the students today at Bees Creek! We drilled some samba breaks to tidy the timing and improve technique (is that ever something we stop trying to improve??) and then I asked them to help build some moments around our samba - and voila, here you have their combo! --- Remember, you get the building blocks at each class, and the practice in your own time is critical to growth in skills, technique, stamina, and your own style!! -- Still have... no idea why I can't share the wide shot of this on this account and I'm tired of uninstalling and reinstalling this app. The full group do not fit in this frame --- #sambista #sambanopé #sambanope #sambadrills #stamina #training #fitgirls #bodypositivity #healthateverysize #healthateveryage #braziliansamba #whatsonindarwin #litchfield #ageisjustanumber See more

04.01.2022 Lovely to have everyone join us for our beginners trial class last night! If you missed out but are keen join us, keep an eye on our posts - the new term will start in the first week of Feb for both locations: Tuesday night at Coconut Grove, and Saturday mornings at Bees Creek. Details coming!!

04.01.2022 In honour of our samba choreography courses starting next week, we've decided to share with you one of the mini routines learned in a class in a previous term to give you a taste of the style and movement of samba and how it can be danced to so many different types of music! Our choreography courses will devote 6 weeks to learning new techniques and perfecting a full routine to performance level. We have two courses to choose from! Every Tuesday from October 13th for 6 weeks... Beginners 6.30 - 7.30pm Int/Advanced 7.30-9pm Head to our events to find out more, or send us a message! We're looking forward to dancing with you!

04.01.2022 Did you see this? The result of our 6-week choreography course last year with our intermediate and advanced students. I can't believe it's been 5 months since we filmed it. We've all grown so much since then as dancers. Well done everyone! Oh! I should say, the costumes chosen for this are to show that you can dance samba in anything. The feathers are obviously iconic, but samba is so much deeper than that and I'm so pleased to share another aspect of this wonderful dance. Wh...at do you think? Should we do another dance video? https://youtu.be/AsMNVxF-Xnk

04.01.2022 Unfortunately due to the updated recommendations and requirements around non-essential services, we feel it is best to cancel our community samba class on Tuesday. To soften the blow we are sharing all of the opportunities to dance at home including online classes from our friends interstate and creating an At Home Samba Challenge for our students to keep up their training. Stay home everyone

04.01.2022 Only one more weekend to get through before we kick off classes out at Bees Creek! Have you heard the special we're offering for our first class? Bring a friend with you and you get to dance for free*! Saturday 31st of October at 10am we start dancing! *Two for the price of one!

03.01.2022 Beginners, we've got casual classes happening over Dec-Jan at our Bees Creek location and they start this Saturday, 10am. $10/class :) https://fb.me/e/8bh4kmRsH -- Thinking of our beautiful Ana featured in this pic, whose smile is the gift that keeps on giving! Who remembers this gig at Spain Place in 2018? Did you have a favourite moment?

03.01.2022 Introducing Jac for our next Samba Student Spotlight Jac has been dancing with us pretty much since Erin began @espiritodosamba! We have loved getting to know her over the years through classes and performances. Recently - very recently - this month in fact - she moved away from Darwin and we miss her terribly ---- Video shows images of Jac dancing at various locations and being interviewed.... Jac: I love that it's empowering women and you don't need a partner. Often classes are at the end of the day. You get home from work and the last thing you want to do is move off the couch. And I think the thing I just remind myself of is I know that if I go I will feel so much better afterwards than I do now. So I just go "let's just go and see" and it's never failed me once. Liz: You've done performances with us as well - how have they felt? Jac: Amazing! It's...you get such a high, such a buzz at the end of it. You can ride that high for ages! See more

02.01.2022 The question, as ever, is: do you get the feet or the feathers in frame? Gotta say we're so excited to be bringing some Brazilian samba flavour to the NYE BEACHBALL at @beachfront_hotel hotel tonight thanks to @dkf_events . Have you grabbed your tickets yet? ... #sambanopé #samba #braziliansamba #nye #darwincity #beachfronthotel #dancethenightaway

01.01.2022 December is packed full of excitement! 6 December, 3pm EDS CHRISTMAS PARTY | Celebrate the hard work of our students and see showcases of all levels, from beginner to advanced. From there we head to the Foreshore Cafe to chill together for afternoon tea - finally a chance to hang out with this amazing Samba community! If you've been missing our feathers, we'll finally be shaking them here!! ***All events require booking. Links through events on FB

01.01.2022 Capturing the applause of the crowd in the final moments of our int/advanced routine. Yes, yes, we're still editing the full dance clip so we keep having to tease you with these moments. But more importantly we want to share the wonderful work of our dancers. A team of committed individuals who have each other's back on the dance floor. Yes, samba no pé is a solo dance style, but there's nothing that can compare with sharing that connection to samba, each other and our audien...ce. So a special and wonderful shout out to the ladies that have worked their bundas off this year. It's an honour to dance with you - I'm so pleased we've had so many opportunities to do so! Huge thanks to Kristy of @rixkixarts for creating such a wonderful space for lovers of dance to gather with your end of year party RixKixMax with so many different dance schools and styles sharing the same stage. @amyhetherington never fails to bring warmth and joy to every event (this time as MC), thank you Mrs Claus . @bennygold77 thank you for your perfect music and smile!!
