24.01.2022 Preservatives kill microbes. But with healthy skin as your objective, you need to preserve and protect your skin’s microbiome. How do you get around this conundrum with your skincare ? Esse uses a mild preservation system that easily evaporates once applied to skin. It’s a clever solution your products are kept mould-free in their containers and your microbiome also remains intact when the products are used on your skin.

19.01.2022 Certain microbes (okay, a really nasty one in particular !) may be giving all the others a bad name at the moment. It’s probably worth remembering that most microbes living in us / on us are neutral or beneficial. Some of the things your resident beneficial skin microbes do for you : Produce hyaluronic acid and other moisturising factors Modulate barrier function - very important to keeping pathogens out & moisture in ... Modulate immune response - controlling unwarranted inflammation and sensitivity Maintain the skin’s acidic pH - making it hard for harmful microbes to thrive Increase anti-microbial peptide production - selectively targeting only harmful microbes Calm, healthy skin not only looks better but ages slower than skin which is constantly in a state of imbalance and low-level inflammation. Skin probiotics can help to shift the microbiome to a healthy, balanced state. See our website blogs for more info about your microbiome and probiotics in skincare.

18.01.2022 Today we celebrate the marvel of the microbiome ! Microbes are everywhere around us, in us and on us and without them our world would not be as we know it. Care for your microbiome and it will care for you.

18.01.2022 Aloe vera (Aloe Barbadensis) is a key ingredient in many skincare products, with good reason. Its soothing and healing properties have been known for thousands of years, often used in the treatment of minor burns and wounds. With the benefit of modern science, we now know it contains dozens of potential active compounds including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. In skincare, the gel pressed from the leaves is highly moisturizing, absorbs quickly into the skin and helps calm sensitivity, reduces inflammation and aids healing. It has also demonstrated, amongst others, anti-acne properties and the promotion of collagen and hyaluronic acid production. Esse uses this in many products, especially across the Sensitive range

13.01.2022 "Serum for your hands" That’s what Sarah said after using Esse Hand Cream. Sarah also said It's blend is soft, meaning it soaks into your hands so quickly. I noticed a difference in my complexion right away. My hands now have that peaches and cream look of younger years. They're more hydrated and feel softer to touch. I'm impressed. 13.01.2022 Skin fasting is similar in principle to body fasting, where cutting back (or cutting out for a while) on your normal skincare products can give your skin the opportunity to rebalance itself naturally. It may be especially beneficial if you are feeling frustrated with the results of all your skincare efforts or have a concern which doesn’t seem to improve. The important part is how you come back from it. Introduce new products slowly and ensure they are always contributing to... a healthy, balanced skin microbiome which is the foundation for great skin. Sometimes less really is more. Please consult a skincare professional if your concerns persist. 12.01.2022 There was a time when our skin’s ecosystem was in balance. Healthy. And wild. Then our modern lifestyles and industrial beauty stripped it, polluted it and domesticated it. Natural balance was replaced with chemical dependence. We lost a microbiome perfected by hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. We lost our best skin and we want it back.... 12.01.2022 New Esse users sometimes comment on the shades of red-brown colour in some Esse products. This is typically from the inclusion of an extract from the Rooibos plant (Aspalathus Linearis). Rooibos (English translation Red Bush) is unique to the Western Cape region of South Africa and is often used to brew a refreshing herbal tea. Rooibos extract has also been shown to be very effective as a skincare ingredient, including high-level antioxidant, barrier protection and anti-i...nflammatory properties. The colour is as nature provides it and presents the extract in its most active form. There’s no reason to interfere with that! Esse uses Rooibos which is organically farmed, Fair Trade certified and part of an empowerment program for rural women. . By the way, the product shown is the new - and very popular Esse Hyaluronic Serum which boosts moisture levels for a quick plumping effect while caring for your skin’s microbiome - and it’s certified organic, vegan and cruelty-free See more

Bakuchiol - a clinically-compared natural alternative to retinol but without the sensitivity side effects. Leaves skin firmer, lines reduced, elasticity improved. GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric... Acid) - relaxes facial muscles and reduces fine lines. Hyaluronic Acid - hydrates and plumps to reduce the appearance of fine lines Probiotic lysates - contain Anti-Microbial Peptides (AMP’s) to help shift the skin’s microbiome to a more balanced state Tyndallised probiotics - improve barrier function Vitamin B5 - promotes wound healing, improves barrier function and ameliorates skin irritation See more

06.01.2022 Antimicrobials in skincare. Because bacteria have (very undeservedly) received a generally bad reputation over the years, anti-microbials have too often been seen as the answer to acne and other skin concerns. The problem is that antimicrobials are indiscriminate, killing the bad microbes along with the good. Since beneficial microbes are a critical part of the skin’s natural protection system, removing them leaves the skin vulnerable. Rather than adopting the long term use of anti-microbials, a better strategy is to negate the harmful microbes with probiotics and strengthen you own natural defences by nurturing a robust and healthy microbiome.

06.01.2022 Use those sunny winter days to spend some time outdoors. It’s good for your body and your soul - and you may find some pretty winter blooms while you’re out there

05.01.2022 Fragrances, colourants and other synthetic ingredients represent risk factors in your skincare products and Esse actively avoids using them. Synthetics can have a highly detrimental effect on the skin microbiome, disrupting it and compromising the very important protective functions it performs. Moreover, humans have evolved over many hundreds of thousands of years in a totally natural environment, so when our skin encounters something unfamiliar the immune system is programmed to kick in to deal with the perceived threat, resulting in inflammation a major contributor to skin ageing. (The inflammation isn’t always obvious, but even with a persistent low level your skin ages faster than it should). Choose your skincare products carefully and always consider your skin’s first line of defence a healthy microbiome.

04.01.2022 We regularly see or hear about Hyaluronic Acid as a hero ingredient in skincare products, not only for what it does but also its ability to draw moisture and other actives into the skin where they are most needed. It can be truly remarkable. However - as is often the case - the devil is very much in the detail Hyaluronic Acid is not a single molecular entity, but rather a polymer which can exist in many thousands of variants, and hence molecule sizes. ... If the molecule size is too large, it cannot penetrate the skin to do its most valuable work beneath the surface. If the molecule size is too small, it can penetrate too deeply and trigger irritation and inflammation. Without specifically selecting the ideal molecular size, most of the HA going onto your skin could be ineffective or, worse, even harmful. Simply claiming Hyaluronic Acid as an ingredient doesn’t mean there’s enough in the product to be beneficial and actually make a difference. A substantial amount of the commercially available Hyaluronic Acid is extracted from animal cartilage. (Alternatives include bacterial sources). How much do you know about the Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare products ? Hyaluronic acid is an important ingredient in a number of Esse products. To find out more about how Esse formulates with Hyaluronic Acid, see our website blog Hyaluronic Acid https://www.esseskincare.com.au/blogs/news/hyaluronic-acid

04.01.2022 The value of a great hand cream. Come rain or shine, cold or warmth, there is always a good reason to use hand cream.
