11.01.2022 Does someone in your life suffer with mental health challenges but you feel helpless in how to support them? I'm sure we've all been there. If you haven't, you are extremely lucky. Let me share a few things that might help in supporting loved ones through difficult times.... (Quick disclosure - I'm not a doctor or psychologist. I am a trained Mental Health First Aider and someone who has seen some of the people I love most struggle with mental health illnesses and issues for many years now). Don't act like everything is ok. If they have openly told you of their struggles or diagnosis this is a big deal & they need your support. Not acknowledging their illness/issue makes them feel less valid, like their struggle isn't legit. Ask how they are feeling or coping. This can be hard - it's not that you don't care - but you might be afraid of the answer. This matters to them. By asking you are showing your support, acknowledging their illness/issue is legit & re-enforces they aren't alone. Just be there. If they are having a tough day, call in on them for a cuppa or to watch the footy. You don't have to say anything but by physically being there it can make a big difference. If they are cancelling catch ups or not attending events, call in on them. They might really want to see you or attend the event but their mental state is holding them back. Again, just be there. If they live with you pay attention to their body language or actions. If you notice something is out of character or unusual it may be a sign that they are struggling. This might help you to know how to act eg whether to give them space or whether you should stay close by; whether to ask if they are ok; whether there is a task you can do to help take some pressure off them etc It can be especially difficult to "be there" if they don't live locally to you. It doesn't mean you can't support them. Video calls make staying in contact so much easier. Yes a phone call is nice but seeing a face can make a world of difference. Ultimately, just be there. The world we live in is bloody tough and connection is something everyone needs more than ever. Käännöstoimisto Transly

09.01.2022 HAIR TIES Not something that springs to mind when plastic is mentioned but more often than not they contain the dreaded P word. Don't worry though, there are some great, plastic free options available.... I bought this 5 pack back in Feb 2019 (20 months ago) and they are still going strong. They are Kooshoo brand, certified organic, made from natural rubber & cotton. I have really thick, heavy hair. In the past I would buy a packet of hair ties every 6 weeks or so as they were constantly snapping or stretching to the point they were no longer usable. Whilst they did cost more than I would've normally spent on a packet of hair ties, the money I have saved since my original purchase far outweighs that. Plus when I am done with them they can go into the compost bin, with no negative impact on the environment. Plastic free swaps don't have to be huge or hard. Small, inexpensive changes are just as important!
