25.01.2022 New Years Running/Exercise Goals! 2020 has arrived, which means a fresh opportunity to set goals for the year ahead. Whether it be running for fitness, completing a marathon or participating in Oxfam Trailwalker, it is important to incorporate the below strategies to reduce your risk of injury, especially in the initial training phase.... It is crucial to increase your training load gradually and not do too much too soon. If the amount of load placed on your body exceeds the body’s ability to handle new stress, you are placing the body’s tissues at a higher risk of injury. A few key strategies to consider are: Preparing and following a running program. Incorporating strength training. Wearing appropriate footwear. Allowing yourself adequate rest. Book an appointment today with one of our Podiatrists to discuss your running/exercise goals. We can assist in addressing any questions or concerns you may have.

19.01.2022 In line with current Federal and State guidelines, Essendon Foot Clinic will continue to operate. However, we have decided to place the following conditions on which patients we will be comfortable providing podiatry for: 1. Those who are high risk with a current or recent history of foot ulceration and/or infection. 2. Those whose condition will limit their ability to complete activities of daily life (including self care and travel to essential services).... To protect ourselves and the other high risk patients we will be seeing, we strongly encourage those entering our clinic to practice a high level of personal hygiene and avoid touching surfaces where possible. On top of already practiced infection control procedures during treatment, we have placed further measures in place to separate patients including spacing appointment times and immediately placing patients in treatments rooms. If you have any concerns or questions regarding this policy and how this may affect your upcoming appointment, please feel free to contact the clinic via phone or email and we will endeavour to find an amicable outcome. We thank you for your understanding.

13.01.2022 Strength Training for Runners: Calf Raises Strength training plays an essential role in injury prevention and optimising performance. Research has suggested 30-50% of all sporting injuries are related to overuse tendon problems. Achilles tendinopathies account for 11% of all running injuries and are the most common tendon pathology affecting the lower limb.... Calf raises are an essential component of any runner’s strength program. Weakened calf muscles can place excessive amounts of stress on structures including your Achilles tendon. TIPS: Work the muscles to fatigue, don’t push through pain. Reps and sets vary depending on your strength. Try and start with 3 sets of 8-12 reps with rest of 1-2 minutes. For runners, aim to build to 3 sets of 25-30 single leg calf raises. Ideally leave a rest day between strength training and running. You can progress each exercise by adding dumbbells or weighted backpacks. @ Essendon Foot Clinic

06.01.2022 How many can you do? The single-leg heel raise test is often used in clinical practice to assess the strength and endurance of plantar flexors (i.e. calf muscles). The normative values displayed in the table above are based on single-leg heel raises performed to fatigue on a 10 degree incline. Heel raises were paced by a metronome at 60bpm with the heel lifting on the first beat and lowering on the second.... It is importance to remember that sex, age, BMI and activity levels will influence an individual’s result. There is no MAGIC number that will suit everyone. 05.01.2022 In relation to our recent posts regarding calf strength and calf raises we thought we would share this Calf Raise App by Kim Hebert-Losier. It is an excellent tool to measure calf raise performance from your own iPhone or iPad and is designed by physiotherapists and sports scientists. The app allows you to perform a Calf Raise/Heel raise test which is often used in clinical practice. It enables the assessment of your calf strength and endurance and involves going up and down ...on your toes as many times as you can. It can assist in detecting differences between left and right, as well as injury deficits. It also: Provides a metronome to assist with pacing. Measures power and work with an external load by simply entering your additional load used to test strength over endurance. Tracks the path of your heel raise via a circle placed on your heel as seen in the image above to get your total and peak height.
