17.01.2022 Borage for Courage! Borage - Borago officinalis An herb as beautiful as it is flavorful... Originally from the Mediterranean, this annual herb came to America... via England/Europe where the adage "borage for courage" was used for centuries. Many glasses of wine graced with borage were raised for those in battle through the ages, but linguistic experts suggest that the courage implied also referred to its use as an aphrodisiac. Borage flowers can be frozen into ice cubes, added into wine/sangria, gin and tonic or most traditionally in Pimm's cup for added flavor and beauty. Both the sky blue star shaped flowers, and tender leaves add a light cucumber flavor to fresh salads or steamed greens. Bees will attest to the fact that borage is also a fine plant for pollinators. 14.01.2022 Christmas Beetle anyone? Believe it or not, but those little grubs you dig up in your yards can turn into Christmas Beetles. These little beetles, which were on...ce plentiful are on the decline. Conservation is not something which happens out there beyond our backyards, it’s not something which experts need to lead, and it’s not something that we are disconnected from....it starts at home See more

09.01.2022 This is why we must make biodiverse plantings across the urban and suburban landscapes we live in a priority. For our own health, not to mention fighting extinction of the species that keep our ecologies functioning and healthy.

07.01.2022 The Grow Free TEDx talk - three years ago now in November 2017. Still the most nervous/scariest moment of my life, but also the most amazing. There was a lot of... interest in the group after this, Especially with Marcia and Drew helping out on the day of the event with handing out seeds, seedlings, pamphlets and smiles to folks attending the talks. <3 See more

05.01.2022 some great Spring lists here!

02.01.2022 By the time Janet leaves (munching, to my horror, on a very unripe nectarine), my attitude towards working in the garden has shifted. After finding out that it has been incrementally built up by the love and labour of renters, any bitterness evaporates; I become less stingy with my perennials, planting more of them directly into the soil rather than keeping them in pots.

01.01.2022 Do grasses store carbon like trees? Many people have heard that trees can sequester or store carbon but did you know that grasses also serve this important role...? In fact, although trees can store more carbon, the storage in grass may be more stable since much of it is below ground. This makes it less likely to be lost to the atmosphere during fires, droughts or floods. Trees store more carbon aboveground in trunks, branches and leaves while grasses store more carbon belowground in their roots. Click to read more! https://bit.ly/2YThxQ7 The Prairie Project
