23.01.2022 Thorough eye consultations without the rush

22.01.2022 Cataracts Part 3 There are 3 options for cataract surgery. The First option is that you will be left with an eye for distance vision and an eye for reading. This is done so that, in theory, you won't need reading glasses. For those who do a lot of reading or play sports this option doesn't work well. The Second option is that the replacement lens is a multifocal. In theory, no glasses, however lights at night can be a huge problem here and fine print can be compromised. Option 3 is that the replacement lenses give you best possible distance vision and you will just need reading glasses. This is the most successful option and the option that I would suggest you take. for any extra information or concerns Please Phone us (32615666) or email [email protected]

21.01.2022 Health Funds AHM and Defence Health finish their financial year on June 30, so if you are a member of these 2 health funds and you haven't claimed for glasses or contact lenses in 2019-2020 now is the time to do it. Unfortunately Health Funds don't give you any bonus for not claiming each financial year. We presently have a Frame Sale on all frames and sunglasses of 10-50% off until June 30, so take advantage of this while you can. All of the other health funds finish their financial year on 31 December.

19.01.2022 We all know of someone who has Diabetes whether they are Type 1 (usually Insulin dependent and as a result of Genetics) and Type 2 ( usually result of Lifestyle and occurring over the age of 40). I say usually because not every Diabetic falls into these categories. People who have diabetes are more at risk of damage to their eyes whether retinal damage or a quickening of cataracts. For this reason, it is important for Diabetics to have regular (yearly) eye checkups. Our eyes... are the first part of our body which can be affected by Diabetes as the blood vessels in the eye are the smallest and most affected by rising sugar levels. We can have damage to our retinas without our knowledge, and any treatment works best earlier rather than later. Treatment of burst blood vessels of the retina has improved greatly over the last 10 years and can make the difference between "normal" sight and greatly reduced vision. 18.01.2022 So, what are cataracts? Cataracts are a condition of the lens inside the eye that makes vision very hazy and also causes a lot of trouble with glare. They are mainly caused by the ageing process and typically people who are over 75 have them to varying degrees. The cataract process can be quickened by people having out-of-control diabetes and also by some medications. We will all get cataracts at some stage in life as it is just like having grey hair and a few wrinkles. The good thing is that the surgery required to fix the cataract is relatively quick and low risk. If you want more information about cataracts and surgical options give me call.

14.01.2022 A post with a difference today Why do people resist change in their lives? 1. Predictability - as humans we love this as it confirms our identity. 2. Self-Verification - this is what keeps us trapped and 3. Disintegration Anxiety - makes us fearful of change.... Many people want change in their lives (for different reasons), but to do this we have to first change ourselves into the person we need/want to be. How you are Being right now is how you are manifesting right now. To change, you have to create a new you from now and decide who you want to be right now. This creates uncertainty which is exactly where you want to be. In other words you must BE before you can do, and you must DO before you can Have. Our identity controls our life and our lives reflect the stories that we tell ourselves about everything. If this sort of thinking interests you, I would recommend Jim Fortin's Podcasts. 14.01.2022 As we in Brisbane are having a re- occurrence of the Coronavirus and some of us are a little more concerned than before it is important that we keep ourselves as strong as possible. By strong, I mean mentally and as physically fit as we can. Regular exercise helps with both. You may or may not know that, we need to stay out of fear as this only brings our immunity down without any benefits. Staying in the 24 hour media cycle doesn't help at all. Be aware of what is going on without too much emotion is the key. If you do these things you will find yourself coping with life with a smile on your face.

10.01.2022 So, what is Macula Degeneration? Firstly the Macula is part of the retina at the back of your eye. So it can't be seen by the naked eye. The Retina is responsible for all of your vision whether you are looking straight ahead or in the periphery. Any damage to the retina can be fatal towards us being able to see properly. The Macula is the part of the retina which is responsible for our central vision - which means our straight ahead vision or our reading. When the macula is d...amaged, it is like having a central haze in our vision and makes reading small print very difficult. If you notice this type of vision abnormality, you need to get your eyes tested ASAP as some early changes can be treated. Macula degeneration usually happen to people who are over 60, however can occur to younger people particularly those who have Diabetes. 09.01.2022 Today is our 20th Anniversary of us opening in 2000. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us over this time. In a World that seems a little crazy at times it is nice to be able to say this. We currently have a new range of Sunglasses which are needed as our weather eventually gets warmer and we have more sunshine. When purchasing sunglasses, the most important thing to look for is to see if they are compliant with Australian standards. If the sunglasses that you are looking at have that information on them, then you can be assured that they will keep out all of the harmful rays of the sun. On each post from now I will have a quote of the day to think about. Todays quote is "Your Life will follow your thoughts no matter what's true about the World".(Something to ponder)

07.01.2022 Have a Hearty Day!

04.01.2022 With 2020 being the year of the unusual, our electronic devices and Zoom calls have become our new way of life. Blue light which comes from phones, tablets, lap-tops or desk top computers has become a concern for all health care professionals. Blue light is of particular concern to Optometrists as it has been found to cause eye fatigue, tiredness, headaches and could be responsible for the acceleration of cataracts. Because of this, I recommend that everyone who spends 4 hours or more on screens should have a blue blocker in their glasses and even if you don't wear glasses get some blue light protection. Today's Quote of the day requires some thought "See Things as you want them to be, not as they are" Have a great day

02.01.2022 As we begin to see light at the end of the tunnel with Coronavirus it is important that we learn some lessons from this experience. As I am writing this, hopefully restrictions will be lifted in July and we can get back to normality. Some things won't change - more hand washing, wiping down surfaces regularly and wearing face masks when needed, but some of this probably could have been normal anyway. What this virus experience does highlight is the importance of staying healthy and keeping our immunity systems as high as we can. An important part of this is obviously our eye health as well as our mental and emotional health. Trying to keep positive, calm and aware of ourselves and others when circumstances around us are trying to make us do the opposite.

02.01.2022 CATARACTS - PART 2 When your vision has deteriorated so that a change in prescription won't benefit, then cataracts need to be removed and at this point there are 2 options - public or private surgery. The public system requires you to be placed on a waiting list anywhere from 1-4 years. If you have hospital cover private health insurance then the timeframe is shorter i.e. 1-4 months for both eyes. Your health fund will cover most expenses. You can choose to fund your cataract surgery yourself if you don't have private health cover with the procedure costing around $5K for both eyes.
