24.01.2022 Think hacking of your phone is unlikely. Think again. Fortunately there is a great deal of security software available for iOS and Android phones that should stop access from almost all attempts. Never think that any device is 100% hack proof because there is always a way.

24.01.2022 So as you may have noticed by today's storm we are heading into storm season again. There is no better time than now to test your UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to may sure it is working correctly and to make sure that you have the correct equipment protected by it. Power surges and low supply voltage are both killers of computers that aren't protected and even though a lot of the time it's only a power supply that needs replacing sometimes it's the main board or the hard drive that is fried. If you can't operate without your computers and don't know if you have protection in place call me and I'll come and do a check and test for you.

23.01.2022 After having a client bring me their laptop to cleanse it after they were scammed I want to go over a few things that should help you avoid get scammed. 1. If someone cold calls you saying they are trying to give you a refund or say they are from Microsoft or Telstra and they've noticed suspicious behavior and they need your help. DON"T BELIEVE THEM. 2. No one from either Telstra or MS will ever ask to connect to your computer then ask you to log into your online banking wh...ile they are connected. YOU SHOULD NEVER ACCESS SECURE SITES IF SOMEONE IS ACCESSING YOUR PC. EVEN IF IT'S ME. I WOULD NEVER ASK YOU AND NO ONE ELSE SHOULD EITHER. 3. Never ever send any type of payment by withdrawing cash and depositing directly into someones account or covert that cash into any type of gift card of any sort then provide those details to anyone. When you're reading this you may think these are obvious things but these scammers are very convincing and sometimes quite intimidating on the phone. These tactics thrown together with a bit of techno jargon, a couple of genuine looking emails and a website are often enough to convince even the brightest of people that they are genuine callers trying to help. This is never the case. If you ever receive a call you aren't sure of just tell them you want to get advice from your IT guy before doing anything and see how they react. I bet they either object or just hang up. You are always welcome to call me and run it by me but the fact that you're thinking of calling me to ask should tell you your gut knows something is up.

22.01.2022 Merry Christmas to everyone and have a Happy New Year

22.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what your IT support tech gets up to during the days and nights following a big storm like last weeks? That's right, replacing & repairing lots of computers. WARNING:... Computers that are not connected to the power via a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) and computers that are not cleaned regularly really don't get along well with bad weather and power outages. Days of rain like we just experienced and power outages can kill your computers outright. Moisture in the air gathers in the dust, hair and worst of all, Salt which you'll find inside the case of every computer. Together they make a nice juicy salty muddy mess which then gets flicked around by the fans in the case and it lands on the boards, hard drives, memory, etc. This causes blown main boards, dead power supply's and faulty RAM which roughly translates to no computer until its fixed or replaced. Please do yourself and me a huge favour and get your computers checked and cleaned regularly. If you've got a UPS or 2 laying around on the floor, test them at least once every 6 months. If it's no longer working or it just beeping at you all the time, have new batteries fitted and then test it regularly. A little bit of simple proactive maintenance of your IT equipment will prolong it's life and save you hundreds if not thousands of $$$ in repairs and more importantly, lost productivity. That's all, peace out.

21.01.2022 Both myself and Lisa here at Essential IT would like to wish everyone a very Merry and safe Christmas. We will be shutting down over the Christmas period from the 24th of December so I can spend some time with my family and clear my head from the massive few weeks of work I've had leading up to it. I'll be back to work on Wednesday the 2nd of January 2013 ready to tackle another years worth of whatever IT problems you can come up with for me to handle.... If urgent assistance is required while we are having time off you can call me and we'll get you sorted out one way or another. Merry Christmas Everyone and a happy 2013. 21.01.2022 UPnP Security Flaws found. Yet another way for the hackers to get access to your devices.

21.01.2022 What data of yours do cyber criminals want?

20.01.2022 Tech tip for the day

20.01.2022 Here's a little something to think about if you've upgraded to Windows 10

19.01.2022 The power of AI is now being used by the police to peak into what exists on the dark web.

19.01.2022 So as you may have noticed by the recent storms we’ve had we are heading into storm season again. There is no better time than now to test your UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to make sure it is working correctly and to check that you have the correct equipment protected by it. Power surges and low supply voltage are both killers of computers that aren't protected and even though a lot of the time it's only a power supply that needs replacing often it’s the main board or t...he hard drive that is cooked which is much worse. This can cause as much as a couple of days downtime without buying a brand new PC. Equipment run off a UPS receives pure line inverted 240v power at all times and because of this it often lasts for many years longer than equipment plugged into the power point on the wall. If your business can't operate without your computers for hours let alone days and you don't know if you have the correct protection in place that is actually working then call me and I'll come and check it out for you. A little prevention is always better than a lot of cure after the fact. See more

19.01.2022 wondered what is recommended after your system has been hacked? Have a quick read of what Microsoft recommends.

19.01.2022 Here we go again. Make sure you are running current up to date anti-virus and malware protection and always make sure you have installed critical updates.

16.01.2022 A little article about some of my work.

16.01.2022 This is what the hackers of the world are doing these days. There's some seriously smart guys and girls out there that have turned their hobby / passion for hacking both ethically and some not so ethically into a highly sort after skill that demands big money.

15.01.2022 We've been doing some rebranding and we've been working on some new maintenance packages for our current and new clients. Like and share our page to keep updated.

15.01.2022 Some simple things to look out for that give away malware infection. Well worth a read.

14.01.2022 Anyone still running Windows XP might find this interesting.

14.01.2022 Here's something worth considering before updating to Windows 8. http://www.businessinsider.com/windows-8-review-2012-10

14.01.2022 We continues to recommend users disable the Java in their Web browsers, New Java exploit sells for $5000

13.01.2022 This is the kind of thing that nightmares are made of for all of us in the IT industry. I've had one new client hit with it and the result can be devastating if you don't have good backups and up to date security software. Call me if you need a backup & security audit done on your systems.

13.01.2022 There's a new strain out so watch yourselves people.

13.01.2022 Google have some great ideas.

13.01.2022 At least there is a way of retrieving your data with this Crytolocker infection.

13.01.2022 WARNING: This is not one of those virus scams. Please read this and install the latest Windows Updates. The infection is called BlueKeep. On August 13, Microsoft warned of four critical vulnerabilities (CVE-2019-1181, CVE-2019-1182, CVE-2019-1222, and CVE-2019-122), two of which are similar to WannaCry and the BlueKeep crisis in the official blog post. As with the 4 "wormable" vulnerabilities, hackers could use them to spread malware without any user action. "An attacker who ...successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code on the target system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. The vulnerabilities are not only in Windows 10. If the Remote Desktop Services protocol is enabled, the home users should be vulnerable. Now Microsoft is sending a red alert to Windows 10 users to install and apply the updates immediately. How to protect your PC from such security holes? For Windows 10 users, if you are using Windows Update, the latest KB4508433 and the cumulative update KB4512508 will be offered to you automatically. You'd better to search "Windows Updates" in the search bar to double-check and make sure they have been applied correctly. If you don't have automatic update enabled, and have not updated to this most recent OS Build, it will be a little complicated to install the right patches. What happens if my computer is infected? If your computer is infected by this or any strain of ransomware, the process will be as follows: The malware script is executed (typically from an email attachment) After a randomly determined time period, the computer will shut down, typically showing a "blue screen" error. If you experience an error such as this and suspect malware, TURN OFF your computer and DO NOT RESTART. Contact your IT company before restarting the machine. Upon reboot a fake CHKDSK screen will pop up indicating that it is repairing your disk. This is NOT the case and the malware is actually performing full disk encryption. Once encryption is complete, the screen below will display, demanding a ransom to release the user’s files.

12.01.2022 If you've got a spare 20 minutes and are interested about the behind the scenes look at cybercrime and secure hosting take the time to have a look at this documentary about it.

12.01.2022 Have you tested your UPS lately? The batteries in UPS's only last a certain amount of time before they no longer hold a charge and the UPS doesn't work any longer. Do you need your UPS tested or the batteries replaced?

10.01.2022 Wow, 40 years today since the first mobile phone call was made. Now I'm feeling old.

10.01.2022 Thank God that Microsoft have come to terms with the fact that most people can't stand the new user interface of Windows 8 and they are releasing Windows 8.1. It'll be a free update to those of you that are lucky enough to have a Windows 8 machine. Read the artical below to see what you can expect. Thank you for the Start button making it's way back. http://www.indiatimes.com//at-a-glance-changes-coming-with

10.01.2022 Test the websites you use to make sure they have been patched and are secure before you send any username and password details or credit card and account details. http://filippo.io/Heartbleed

10.01.2022 Have you recently had your computer serviced and cleaned? NO, then this is probably what your processor fan looks like. This dust buildup totally stops air flowing through the heat sink which cools your processor. This in turn cause your processor to run hot even though it's running the fan at full speed which is noisy. Then when it realises it can't cool itself with the fan running full speed it'll slow itself down to protect it from overheating and totally cooking and dying. You probably won't notice the problems this causes during winter but it's the perfect time to have your PC's serviced so they are good to go when the temps start to rise again.

10.01.2022 All good things must come to an end. Windows 7 users are advised to upgrade to Windows 10, as security updates and support for Windows 7 will stop from 14 January 2020.

09.01.2022 Have you recently had Windows 10 install itself without you accepting the license or asking it to? You may want to read this and call your lawyer.

08.01.2022 If you've seen this as one of my clients has then give me a call and we can sort it out for you. http://www.canberratimes.com.au//scammers-using-afp-logo-a

06.01.2022 If you haven't updated your anti-malware software I highly recommend you do. Malwarebytes is still one of the best bits of anti-malware software you can get. It's cheap at only $5/mth or $60/yr and well worth it. If it saves you once it's paid for itself many times over.

05.01.2022 Here's a little Christmas present all of you that follow my page and use Windows 7, 8 or 10. These features in Windows only benefit Microsoft and can compromise your privacy.

04.01.2022 This is something that is often overlooked and it really can't be if you value your data.

02.01.2022 If you are running Trend Anti Virus or Firewall software you'll want to have a read of this major flaw in it.
