24.01.2022 Another win for the brain when following a Mediterranean diet "A healthy Mediterranean diet includes foods that are rich in fruit and vegetables, which [have] antioxidants, and in fish and oils, which include healthy fats. These nutrients help sustain cognitive function by reducing inflammation and oxidation in the brain.

21.01.2022 Your actions will save lives. This is why its important to stay home:

21.01.2022 A recent post from our HealthGoals100 site. Cant wait to put on the sneakers for another run tonight after work. Love that runner's high!

21.01.2022 Taking time to smell the rosesWeve not posted for over a week, having been mourning a death in the family. Life is precious. Remember to hug often, love a lot and have gratitude for the many things you have to be thankful for

19.01.2022 Yes! We have been using the VLA to help our clients improve and manage their health since it first arrived on the Australian scene 2 decades ago (the year we got engaged). We upgraded to the MetaScan as soon as it became available. It has been used extensively in research and clinical practice to discern useful bio-markers related to health-status and ageing. We use this technology as a quick, accurate and non-invasive way of measuring lean mass and body fat, whilst providing insight into fluid status and cell membrane health. We love seeing improvements in response to nutrition and lifestyle intervention. Make an appointment to get your measurements done.

18.01.2022 Flu shots are PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE! - Flu shots are way less painful than getting the flu. - Getting vaccinated helps protect those around you. - The flu can be deadly, particularly for those with compromised immunity, babies, the elderly, the unwell and asthmatics. - You can't catch the flu from a flu shot.... - Reactions to the flu shot are rare and usually mild. Wash your hands. Keep your immune system strong. AND get the flu shot. See more

18.01.2022 Another study telling us how good purple anthocyanin-rich blueberries are. Eating the equivalent of 200 grams (a bit over 1.5 cups) a day for a month, beneficially altered numerous gene expression patterns. This led to, amongst other things, a significant reduction in blood pressure https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30772905

17.01.2022 Deep fried food has a bad reputation and this study does nothing to let let it off the hook. The extreme temperature generated during deep frying causes significant chemical changes and damage to the structure of the oil. In this study, the repeated use of oils used for frying was shown, in mice, to increase the metastatic spread of late stage breast cancer to lung tissue.

17.01.2022 Sooo funny... because it is sooo true.

16.01.2022 Some wonderful lifestyle advice to improve mood and mental health from Prof Jerome Sarris.

15.01.2022 We're still here. Our landline says the number has been disconnected. It really hasn't. Telstra normally forwards all landline calls to our mobile. They stopped. They said it would be fixed ASAP.... Our mobile number works perfectly. Please call us on 0401624100

15.01.2022 Great article. Couldn't agree more. Bioidentical hormones are not natural they are synthetically manufactured in the lab just like HRT. They are expensive and use delivery methods that are not well tested, potentially delivering excessively high or low doses.

15.01.2022 Previously, coffee has been thought to contribute to arterial stiffness, however new research coming from the Queen Mary University of London, published in the journal Heart, suggests otherwise. There was no significant differences in systolic blood pressure, heart rate nor arterial stiffness, between those who drank less than one cup of coffee a day, compared to those drinking one to three cups, nor those drinking more than three cups daily. How many cups do you have? https://heart.bmj.com/content/105/Suppl_6/A8.2

14.01.2022 Hear, hear! And for EVERYONE else, social distancing!!!! We are now doing ALL of our appointments remotely (via phone or video-link), and both kids have made the decision to study from home. Social catchups with friends this weekend, and beyond, will be via FaceTime . Please, let's get serious and do this for our amazing, dedicated health professionals, our loved ones, older family members and all of us who are vulnerable

14.01.2022 Avocados are delicious. They're also rich in potassium, fibre, monounsaturated fats, lutein and more. One avocado a day has now been associated with a significa...nt reduction in blood small dense-LDL and oxidised-LDL levels. Elevations in sd-LDL and ox-LDL significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. This benefit was shown to be independent of the healthy fatty acid profile seen in avocados and likely due to a reduced oxidation of LDL molecules. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31616932 See more

14.01.2022 Drug-resistant bacteria, and now drug-resistant fungi, are rapidly becoming a very real concern. As this article suggests, people with with compromised immunity are at greater risk. Poor immune health can also increase susceptibility to cold and flu virus. To help support immune health, we have developed a Comprehensive Immune-support Plan that we can personalise to you. Contact our clinic if you would like to make an appointment to discuss your immune health.

14.01.2022 Very timely in this HOT Perth weather. Drink plenty of water too!

12.01.2022 Another great tip from HealthGoals100. Chronic disease reduction is not about a single magic bullet. It's about putting all the pieces of the puzzle together and being consistent.

11.01.2022 Great article highlighting the importance of magnesium. If you need further advice, we are only a consultation away.

11.01.2022 EDCs - These days they're everywhere. Here's some tips to help limit your exposure.

11.01.2022 Great advice by a world leader in the field of Alzheimer's Disease.

10.01.2022 A great tip from HealthGoals100

09.01.2022 A new study has shown that eating vegetable nitrates, found mainly in green leafy vegetables and beetroot, could help reduce your risk of developing early-stage age-related macular degeneration. (AMD).https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases//10/181019100558.htm

08.01.2022 A lovely, simply written article overviewing some diet basics that help weight control. Enjoy!

08.01.2022 A good news story. Another reason to enjoy a little dark chocolate every day.

08.01.2022 Twenty years ago, T2D (type two diabetes) was a disease of adulthood, this is no longer the case. Currently in WA, one out of 12 children diagnosed with diabetes under 16 years have T2D and 6 per cent are diagnosed at less than 10 years of age

08.01.2022 Our Smoothie book is available and ready for download (e-book edition) from our HealthGoals100 site. Full of fantastic, delicious recipes that won't overload you in calories, as many smoothies so easily can. We hope you love it as much as we do! x

07.01.2022 We do not wish to add to the noise about coronavirus sweeping social media. Mis-information is rampant, creating panic among many and complacency in others. Blogs, Instagram & Facebook posts, or opinion pieces, do NOT trump advice from our medical and public health experts. We encourage you to source your information from reputable sources such as: In Australia: * The Health Department and Government ... * Coronacast a daily 10 minute podcast by Dr Norman Swan, ABC. In Western Australia: * Premier Mark McGowan is providing a daily Facebook update. * WA president of AMA (Australian Medical Association) - Dr Andrew Miller is providing regular media interviews with local insights and advice. The actions of us all will make a difference to how quickly this spreads, how it impacts our frontline medical workers and their capacity to care for those in need. We are all in this together and we all need to be responsible, calm, kind and considerate of others. On another important note, support of small businesses is important. Thankfully, we implemented distance appointments (phone or video-chat) several years ago, leading to 50% of our appointments last year being done remotely. In the last week, most of our bookings have switched their appointments to a phone or video-chat appointments. So, if you would like to access our health advice, and prefer to not leave home, be assured that we are still doing business as usual and we are here to help. We appreciate your support during this difficult time.

07.01.2022 Today is our last consulting day for the year, returning on Tuesday 8th January. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and our best wishes for a wonderful, happy and healthy New Year We look forward to seeing you in 2019.

06.01.2022 In 2017, researchers estimated that in a single year, 5.6 to 7.8 million premature deaths were likely due to eating less than 500 to 800 grams respectively, of fruit and veg a day. Here's what 800 grams of prevention looks like on a plate. - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5837313/

06.01.2022 Great ideas from the World Health Organisation. We can do many of these ideas with our older kids too - you're never too old to up the music and dance with your teen!

04.01.2022 Someone in Australia dies every 12 minutes from heart disease, and a family is changed forever "Two thirds of respondents were overweight, half led an inactive lifestyle, one in three ate an unhealthy diet and one in five had a family history of heart disease". So, what are you doing about it? Great article - have a read!

04.01.2022 Aging comes with many challenges, including muscle loss, reducing mobility and exercise. This tends to be accompanied by increased inflammation and oxidative stress, resulting in pain and tissue damage, along with decreased control of lipid and glucose metabolism. Now the good news: a two-phase, randomised, double-blind, clinical trial, found using a flavonoid-rich cocoa supplement with a cocoa flavonoid content of 179mg, improved control of blood lipids and glucose, oxidative stress markers, mobility and physical performance. This is great news for aging lovers of high-cocoa dark chocolate, as the cocoa flavonoids seem to improve metabolic performance and to make engagement in exercise more achievable. Just dont overdo it, as extra chocolate also means extra calories. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31056655

04.01.2022 Enjoy green tea and carrots? Here's some great news. Reduced inflammation, oxidation and amyloid beta formation in the brain, along with complete restoration of working memory were seen when researchers added epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a molecule found in green tea, as well as ferulic acid, found in tomatoes, carrots and whole-grains, to the diets of mice suffering with Alzheimer's-like symptoms. The study was in mice, however, the compounds were added at concentrations that are achievable by humans following a healthy plant-based diet.

02.01.2022 Carrying too much body fat increases the risk of several different cancers whilst 30% of all cancers are thought to be preventable. This is a great (short) video from Cancer Council Victoria. It's worth noting that even just small reductions in extra weight can significantly improve health. It doesn't have to be drastic and it can be done gradually, with incremental, small changes. The important thing is that you can sustain it long-term. There is no better day to start, than today
