25.01.2022 5DBIM can take the measuring and mistakes out of Construction cost control.

25.01.2022 This is a core part of my thesis - our failure to use the proven benefits of modern communication and design technologies is costing tax payers millions and dragging us backwards

25.01.2022 Its been 5 years since the release of the 1st edition of the CIC BIM Protocol. Now to be read in connection with PAS 1192. How are you travelling on the road to adoption of BIM processes? Is there stuff you’d like to know more about?... Is it a challenge to know where to begin? You’ll be amazed at how relatively straightforward it can be to get on board. See more

24.01.2022 Always check what version your clients are using before you upgrade...can we maybe have a roll back option in the next version so we can still talk to each other with different versions? ITWO COSTX

22.01.2022 This feature is a Godsend! A major bug-bear with any new software is getting your very useful, tried and tested historical data added to the new expert system in a useable format. Thankfully Exactal added the import via CSV sub-routine that saved me hours of input and re-keying - AND the CSV was intelligent - recognising my rates were grouped into trades, elements and composite items!... #Exactal #CostX #5DBIM See more

21.01.2022 Initially I did wonder how teaching at Uni would go for me. Apparently it worked well because of something called ‘Praxis’. The definition of Praxis includes the teaching of academic theory and principle in combination with industry experience and know how. It has been a highly positive and extremely enjoyable change of direction in my career.

19.01.2022 In 2013 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) very significantly changed their work practices to recognise that Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) were key to implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) and curing the 'cancer' of lowest cost tendering. Can any of my Australian architect connections tell me if the AIA have done, or are planning to do the same? #BIM, #IPD, #ECI

19.01.2022 After an in-depth look at the features and costs of 4D software currently available in the marketplace (and there is a rich cornucopia of options) I was surprised to find the best value for my needs was CostX 6.9 I also found that iTWO dont yet promote this feature. As shown here I have created "progress" views of the BIM file, and with the careful use of zone categories and existing model filters I now have a cash flow forecast for each element (priced in the CostX system) ...contained in these views. It doesn't sing and dance and animate every step, but it does give my client enough detail about sequencing, timing and cost from his humble estimator.

19.01.2022 Still on my soap box about proper BIM, Ill get off it when I retire or die...

18.01.2022 AIQS WA BIM Event in Perth last night. I thought that the Quantity Surveying profession was more up-to-date. I really did. They sometimes identify West Australians as "sand gropers" after the little insect that buries itself in our sandy soil.... Disruption is coming to our industry and our profession, and it's going to be more painful if we leave our heads in the sand.

18.01.2022 A good prediction or a dystopian vision? Where do you see the construction industry in 20 years time? The systemic failures of the construction industry and it’s inability to innovate successfully over the last 50 years means many of the old school will get left behind in the next few decades as a sweeping new intelligent BIM design procurement and construction model (BIMDPC) replaces the traditional way we design and construct the built environment. #builtenvironment #BIM #ECI #SCI

17.01.2022 3D model of the site created from Drone photogrammetry today (demolition now complete). Added an overlay of the original building model from the ECI tender - looks a good fit from here. Thank you Focus Building Company for the opportunity to test out the new drone kit. #photogrammetry #drones #innovation #5dbim https://www.linkedin.com//david-palmer-5dbim_construction-

17.01.2022 Exactal are simply not standing still - they have such a great suite of programs on offer now - I have been working with a Perth client this last few weeks where we used the "drawing overlay" features of CostX to highlight the variations and changes to the project since contract award. Its so much easier to substantiate claims with such an audit trail of good evidence.

15.01.2022 Are 5D BIM QS skills starting to gain traction in Perth?

15.01.2022 What’s the difference between Facebook and LinkedIn? I seem to be able to engage with my industry colleagues much more effectively on one platform than on the other?

13.01.2022 Young men look forward because they have no history, old men look back because they have no future... I keep telling myself I still have lots to look forward to, and participating in Mick's podcast was a highlight this month. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqCcrjzzi64kjfF6ky7SOygZTpivVQ

10.01.2022 Proud Dad moment today, seeing my son Cameron Palmer at The Drone Department praised by his peers for helping two Perth Architects integrate their 3D designs with fully modelled local conditions. #stateoftheart #droneservices #bigdata #photogrammetry #decimatethemesh https://www.linkedin.com//urn:li:activity:672720532416984/

10.01.2022 We've got an ever increasing number of interested construction industry professionals stepping into the BIM multiverse. Come along to the next event Perth North Metro TAFE 5:00 pm Wed 21st Nov 2018 - still a few tickets remaining

10.01.2022 Its probably a little too late now, but I want to start a campaign to BAN THE BIM! Why? Because we're doing it wrong... I mean REALLY doing it VERY wrong. BIM is NOT software, BIM is NOT design team collaboration, BIM is not a 3D model of a building... If you think it is, or thought it was, you've been duped, terribly misled, probably lied to as well by some software evangelist with a penchant for disruption and blockchain.... If you want to know what BIM SHOULD be - you could start by reading the world economic forum "BIM action plan" - and please - read it carefully - because BIM includes a COMPLETE change of behaviours and processes, making a long term commitment, using integrated contracts, involving the entire value chain, redefining the distribution of risk and openly sharing the data (the "I" in BIM). NOTHING ELSE will deliver the productivity and savings we're looking for, and ANYTHING else just isn't BIM - and I want it BANNED #banthebim #doitrightorgohome See more

07.01.2022 This week's challenge - compare the costs of prefabricated building elements (assembled off-site and installed on site in days) vs. traditional construction? The cost of the materials is similar, factory productivity with automated assembly reduces labour costs, and time on site can be reduced to weeks not months? Omit scaffolding to the elevations and you can save even more. Why would we want to do this any other way? #construction #prefabrication #mmc #costsavings

05.01.2022 plus ça change - as the French say; (the more things change...) If we focus on too many fronts at the same time will we all get implementation and change OVERLOAD? What do we do first? How do we make sure it sticks, and it lasts; and finally that the whole industry is ready to make it work???

03.01.2022 Construction People of Western Australia we need your voice! AIA Survey Link: https://curtin.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3lWuo6tj828ChRb... We work in a time of unprecedented change in our industry. Your experience and understanding of virtual design and construction, building information modelling and the associated issues is vitally important in how we prepare for new responsibilities, including such things as insurance provisions, contract arrangements and our core skills and competencies. The AIA in WA alongside Engineers Australia, the AIQS and other professional bodies seek to understand how you are implementing or preparing for these changes, what help you need and where. Please take a few minutes to explain what you do, where you are on your BIM journey, and how you see the future of your profession and our industry. Thank You David Palmer

01.01.2022 I have spent over 35 years in the Construction Industry coaxing and enticing employers and businesses to embrace technology, giving them examples and demonstrations of the benefits of new ways of working, I am so glad to see some traction after all this time.
