24.01.2022 Thank you Mandurah Mail Yes we have rangers for our parks..but isn't it time we have a wildlife officer for our extensive waterways and regional wildlife issues?

21.01.2022 Thank you Mandurah Mail for reporting on today's events. The Mail earlier this week reported that local environmental groups and tourist providers were desperately calling for a dedicated wildlife officer in the region. It follows previous reports of Mandurah dolphins left entangled in fishing line for up to six months due to a lack of resourcing and local expertise. Volunteer groups have been lobbying the state government for the past two years ... and they put more heat on when much-loved Mandurah dolphin calf, Luca, died after his third fishing line entanglement. But the plea for a local wildlife officer has thus far gone unheeded by the state government's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). On Thursday Opposition leader Zak Kirkup pledged $250,000 for a boat and jetski for shallow water monitoring as well as "at least one dedicated officer to be stationed in Mandurah either permanently or rostered on rotation". Volunteers currently use personal boats at their own expense to monitor and help the dolphins. Mr Kirkup said the Swan River had just 25 resident dolphins and several wildlife officers, while Mandurah had close to 90 and no locally-stationed officers. The Labor party has been contacted for comment. Photo - Volunteers attending to a dolphin

16.01.2022 We were excited to finally give out the 2020 FinGuide to everyone who came last night. This guide helps identify the dolphins that live in the Peel-Harvey Estuary, their behaviours and some of their amazing stories. We will continue to give out the guide free at all our events this year. The guide is produced by Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions Dolphin Watch program in collaboration with Mandurah Dolphin Research Project, Mandurah Volunteer Dolphin Res...cue Group, Estuary Guardians, Peel Harvey Catchment Council through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Program, John Tonkin College and Mandurah Cruises. As well we were grateful for funding support from the Australian Government Communities Environment Program for this edition. Here Krista Nicholson, who really is the one who puts the Mandurah guide all together with a lot of love for our dolphins, introduces the guide.

14.01.2022 Easter can be an absolutely crazy time on the waterways. We ask everyone in boats, especially visitors to our City, to please take extra care this Easter break. If you are on a boat over Easter, please make sure there is checking ahead for dolphins that might be in the vessel's path if going at speed. As well by sitting quietly at a distance and observing, you will see and experience far more... We do have caring boat companies based in Mandurah. The operators do all they can to educate visitors on the need to give the dolphins space. Hire boats also carry these stickers, and we thank them for supporting this endeavour both financially and in spirit. This is the dolphins home for life. Hopefully. Have a lovely Easter Estuary Guardians Visit Mandurah

13.01.2022 The Peel-Harvey Estuary is a fisherman's paradise and a great spot for boating, much loved by locals like TackleWorld Miami Owner Ash Ramm and visitors near and far. With a few practical steps we can all prevent accidental littering while out enjoying our waterways. Please share this simple message as together we can all make a big difference. 12.01.2022 Many dolphins have stranded in our shallow inland waterways over the years. They all mattered to us. They all matter to Mandurah.

11.01.2022 Our wildlife in Mandurah matters We have kept basic records on the dolphin population since 1997, over 23 years. We knew this information would be of some use at some time, and many times we have been able to refer back to it and see patterns etc. Of course we couldn't know everything that happened, especially deaths but we captured a fair bit of it. Once dolphins were properly catalogued and named from 2016 by researchers, our recording of events definitely improved. From th...e notes you may understand why we have continued to call for locally based wildlife officers. We are excited that Krista from Mandurah Dolphin Research Project will be completing her thesis into our resident dolphin population quite shortly, and with that proper scientific information will be publicly available. This will include the very high proportion of strandings in Mandurah. We can't wait to be able to highlight her work. In the meantime if you have nothing to do for some time, you can glance thru our simple notes kept on dolphin happenings over the past 23 years here ( 6 pages!) https://www.mandurahdolphins.com/page4 See more

10.01.2022 One of the biggest projects we have been part of is the "Lionel's Legacy Project". Fittingly Jason from DBCA River Guardians introduced the cameras this week at Dolphin Watch. Jason has personally spent over a year working hard to make this successful for our region. As well we must thank Cameron Craigie for championing our idea and DBCA for approving and supporting the whole project. Dave from Peel Mini Earth Movers who made the impossible possible (literally), and Stuart from DPIRD for all his technical expertise. Special thanks to DBCA, Peel Harvey Catchment Council and Alcoa Foundation, City of Mandurah, Rotary Club of Mandurah, Peel Preservation Group, Dolphin Rescue Group and the Estuary Guardians Community, who together all funded this project. Three cameras are fully operational with the 4th to come mid year.

09.01.2022 You may have noticed a cappuccino-like surface scum in sections of the Murray River and adjacent canals in the South Yunderup and Ravenswood areas. While we do ...realise nature’s bad timing over the Easter long weekend, please avoid the following recreational activities in the affected waterways until the scum has subsided: Swimming Wading Kayaking Fishing and crabbing Please also keep pets and livestock away from these waters. __________________________________________ Health warning signs have been erected in the area and bacteria water testing has also been undertaken. Contact with these scums can potentially cause skin irritation and/or other allergic reactions. Ingestion may also cause gastro-intestinal illness. Anyone who comes in contact with this scum or discoloured water should rinse off with clean water and seek medical attention if they feel unwell. We are working with the Department of Water and Health to monitor the situation and will issue further advice next week pending testing results. 07.01.2022 Wonderful free or small fee events for everyone!

03.01.2022 For a number of years we have been calling for wildlife officer/s with equipment to be stationed locally in Mandurah, by the state government. This is a government resource and equipment that has not been allocated for our City. The call is to increase the small number of government DBCA wildlife officers and their capability to meet ever increasing needs in WA, and base locally in Mandurah. We have always seen this as a Mandurah issue across all parties. As WA's second biggest City it's time we had this resource and equipment here just as we have all the others, Fisheries, Marine Safety, Water Police, park rangers etc. Today we received amazing support and thank Zak Kirkup MP for his full support and Liberal party election committment regarding a Wildlife officer in Mandurah with a suitable vessel and jetski for our shallow waterways.

01.01.2022 At the announcement yesterday we had the opportunity to speak for the City and it's wildlife, waterways and tourism on why the issue of Wildlife officers based locally is so important for Mandurah and the Peel Region.

01.01.2022 Love being part of these clean ups with Coastal Waste Warriors . Can't wait till 21st March for the next one.
