24.01.2022 Theres a new face behind our professional journal! Allow us to introduce Deb Owens, the new editor of WordsWorth. An avid reader of WordsWorth and contributed some time ago, she is a self-described literary theory tragic, and has been published in refereed journals. We asked her recently about what she envisions for the journal, and heres what she had to say:... I was intrigued by John Yandell, in his keynote address at the December 2019 AATE Conference, referring to time as rendered the complexity of rendering time, the clash of timelines as fixed points and memory as fragmented in identity (re)-making (Yandell, 2019). A concept upon which to ruminate thought I, for both professional praxis and my own ways of knowing. A concept I will further address in my first editorial. Its relevance to a brief professional biography? Time manifested as teaching. Time transitioned through pedagogical practice. Time delineated through a suite of English syllabuses (Qld). My first experience of a Queensland BSSSS English syllabus was the 1987 version, one year after its inception. Having taught in a state south of the border the first school-based work program I encountered came as a new and interesting challenge. I was privileged to have the opportunity to spend 7 years as a member of the B35 State panel. Deb also has extensive experience in schools, across a variety of sectors. An easy breakdown of her experience is as follows: Queensland (Capricorn Coast region): 15 years as English teacher in a 7 12 boys day/boarding school, became Head of English and Drama; PhD candidate (Gendered Identities in the Drama Classroom); 5 years as Deputy Principal and English teacher at a girls day/boarding school P -12; 2 years as an independent Curriculum Consultant Phase 1 Australian Curriculum implementation; Head of Academic performance and English teacher at a co-educational college; Head of English and LOTE and English/Drama teacher at a girls day/boarding college. If youre interested in submitting to WordsWorth, or for more information, please email Deb at [email protected]

20.01.2022 Kim Wilkins is also running a workshop to complement her keynote entitled 'Putting the Imagination in Imaginative Writing' at our March Seminar: Diving Deep into Story. Although imagination is intrinsic to humans, some writers have difficulty deploying their imagination in writing tasks. There is risk in using the imagination: we might fail, we might embarrass ourselves, we might be revealed as childish or silly. This workshop talks about some of the ways that you can create ...a supportive space for imagination in the classroom, by challenging assumptions about what imagination is. It delves into the concept of big metaphors, and how they can structure stories. And it challenges student reliance on the frictionless cliché, through the method of the third idea. At the end of this workshop, you will feel inspired to go back to your students to help them unlock their most vivid and original ideas. Registrations are open until this Friday 13 March, so if you haven't registered, get in quick! Head over to www.etaq.org.au for more details.

19.01.2022 Our March Seminar: Diving Deep into Story, on March 21, has now been cancelled due to current advice around the risks of COVID-19. This is disappointing for us, for our presenters and for those who have registered. We sincerely thank all of our presenters, Associate Professor Kim Wilkins, our keynote, and all the workshop presenters, who had each prepared wonderful material for us to share. Details for the conduct of ETAQ's AGM, which our rules require us to hold by 31 Marc...h, will be sent to members who would have attended the AGM if the March seminar had not been cancelled. Thanks for your prompt reply to those emails. Our administration officer, Trish Purcell, will be in contact by separate email, with people who have registered to arrange refunds of registration fees. We are looking at alternate ways of providing our professional learning in light of the emerging situation. Stay tuned.

12.01.2022 There's still time to register for our March Seminar: Diving Deep into Story! If you're still tossing up whether to join us, let us help you take the plunge with Mel Dixon's workshop 'Narratives of our time: communicating social and cultural identity through the concept of narrative.' Like any subject there are concepts that are foundational to English and one that we would all agree is important in English is 'narrative'. But narrative is not simple. Narrative drives cultura...l and social identity: it is the way we shape meaning and communicate what is important to us. Whether we are writing a short story or a government report on the bushfires it is narrative that most effectively communicates experiences. Tracing this concept that is at the core of the discipline of English means that we can navigate a pathway through the syllabus that supports what we value in our subject. In this presentation we will look at what we identify as the critical English Textual Concept of Narrative to see how we can support the learning from 7-12. About the presenter Mel Dixon is the Education and Publications Officer for the ETANSW. Until moving to NSW she was an active member of the ETAQ executive, editor of Words Worth and ETAQ Vice President. She has taught across state and independent schools with ten years as Head of English in Queensland. Her most recent publications include Creative Horizons 1 and 2. For the full program and to register for the event, head over to www.etaq.org.au!

11.01.2022 The transition to online learning has been one with some definite teething, and has often felt like many are voiceless in their own teaching. We're aiming to give you the microphone to call out to others, sharing what you're doing, and how you're coping with teaching English in the digital space. One such avenue that we're looking for contributions to our next issue of Words'Worth is digital pedagogies. Digital learning requires a shift in pedagogical practice to what we're more used to in the everyday classroom. Are you using any new pedagogies in your approach to English in this new space? We want to hear from you! Send your submissions to our editor Debbie Owens at debbio[at]stursulas.qld.edu.au. Submissions close Tuesday 2 June!

10.01.2022 Are you deliberating on whether or not to join us for the May Masterclass? We have two keynotes joining us for our foray into online seminars! Our first is Associate Professor Jill Willis. Join her for scholarship and wisdom about the principles of assessment for learning and how to navigate the uncertainties and demands of our profession with compassion and resolve. Jill Willis is an Associate Professor in Education. Her research investigates how learners navigate performan...ce expectations in assessment systems, so learners of all ages can be supported to experience greater success and agency. This interest has led her to teach about assessment for learning, leadership of change, and research in areas such as assessment, learning spaces and middle leadership. Jill particularly enjoys working with teachers and school leaders who undertake higher degree learning and research. For the full program and to register for this event, head over to www.etaq.org.au!

04.01.2022 Auslit Acting Director Dr Catriona Mills is also running a workshop at our March Seminar: Diving Deep into Story. She is presenting on the topic of 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Storytelling: Using AustLit and BlackWords in the classroom.' BlackWords is a rich and deep record of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creative writing and story-telling, as well as associated criticism and scholarship. This workshop will introduce teachers to AustLit and BlackWords as a... tool both for teaching preparation and for use in the classroom, to allow students to effectively find, interpret, and experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing. With hands-on guidance to using the database as a search tool, a repository of information, and a teaching tool, this workshop provides space to not only learn what you can find in BlackWords and how to find it, but also for teachers to query us about what they would like to see and how we can help them embed Indigenous perspectives in their classroom. About the presenter Dr Catriona Mills is the Acting Director of AustLit, for which she has worked since 2010. She holds degrees from Macquarie University and The University of Queensland, with a specialty in nineteenth-century periodical literature. She has published on adaptations of penny-weekly serials to the English suburban stage, authorship attribution in Australian nineteenth-century periodicals, steampunks problematic relationship to empire, and (as frequently as possible) Doctor Who. 03.01.2022 Registration for our March Seminar: Diving Deep into Story is well underway. Looking for reasons to join us as we dive deep into stories? Check out our keynote, Associate Professor Kim Wilkins-Kimberley Freeman! Kim Wilkins is an Associate Professor of writing at The University of Queensland, where she also works as deputy to the Associate Dean of Research in the Humanities Faculty. Her academic research centres around the material circumstances of creativity and creative com...munities, and her latest publication is a book about YA fantasy fiction for Cambridge University Press. She is also the author of 31 novels of fantasy and historical fiction, and her work is published in more than 20 languages Kim will be speaking on the notion of "what is now proved was once only imagined." The abstract for her keynote is as follows: Recent research has shown the value of reading fiction in developing empathy, building community through shared interests, and improved sense of wellbeing. For those of us who have always been bookworms, we didnt need scientists to tell us about the pleasures of disappearing into a story. But as well as these personal benefits, reading and writing fiction have the potential to help students envision a better world. Young people in Australia are facing a future where there is widespread uncertainty about, among other things, employment (due to automation and machine learning); stability of the environment; and unequal access to resources. While critics may think their obsessions with fantasy worlds and superheroes are a shallow form of escapism, there is often a revolutionary energy contained in these stories, which inspires and connects them, and which educators can engage with and enhance through creative writing. One of the few human skills that cannot be replicated by AI is imagination. This address will talk about the value of imagination and stories, how to keep students curious despite the risk-averse demands of curriculum, and will end with a few quick tips to help students express their imagination through creative writing. For the full program, and to register for the event, head over to our website www.etaq.org.au!
