14.01.2022 #socialdistancing has been historically proven to be extremely effective. The figure below compares the death rate due to Spanish flu between two American cities - Philadelphia and St. Louis - between Sep 8 and Dec 28, 1918. Philadelphia first reported cases on Sep 17, 1918. Authorities ignored this and allowed mass gatherings, most notably a city-wide parade on Sep 28, 1918, to continue. School closures, bans on public gatherings and other #socialdistancing interventions wer...e not implemented until Oct 3, 1918, when disease spread had already begun to overwhelm local medical and public health resources. In contrast St. Louis first reported cases on Oct 5, 1918 and authorities moved rapidly to implement #socialdistancing policies on Oct 7, 1918. Philadelphia took 16 days to respond. St. Louis took 2 days to respond. The difference? Civilians in Philadelphia suffered a death rate more than 500% higher than the fortunate souls in St. Louis Source - https://www.pnas.org/content/104/18/7582

14.01.2022 A message from the EP team: In an unprecedented time such as that before us we are often overloaded with information, emails, updates and warnings. It is not abnormal to respond with a sense of fear and anxiety about the uncertainty that lies ahead. Here at Eternal Possibilities we hope to provide not only stories which inspire us, but also stories that give us hope. Many of the doctors we have interviewed were thrown into careers or unorthodox medical paths, which extend...ed outside the scope of their formal medical training. What proved to be instrumental to their personal success, and therefore the benefit of society as a whole, was their ability to adapt and embrace the unfamiliar. These certainly are difficult times and many of us may feel overwhelmed, however there is hope in the fact that we are part of a community that has, and will continue to excel in the face of uncertainty. Please look out for one another and check in with each other mentally. Social isolation doesnt have to be isolating with the help of social media. Much love The EP team

07.01.2022 MELISSA KANG - DOLLY DOCTOR ~FROM PAEDIATRICS TRAINEE, TO GP TRAINEE, TO DOLLY DOCTOR~ The advice I was given was that I would have to study paediatrics as a pathway into adolescent medicine. 04.01.2022 BRIAN SPAIN MISSION LEADER IN DISASTER RESPONSE BALI BOMBINGS IT WAS HORRIFIC. THERE WERE PEOPLE STACKED LITERALLY THREE HIGH AND FIVE DEEP. In 2002 on the weekend that the Bali Bombings occurred, I was in Darwin co-running the first ever Anaesthesia Continuing Medical Education meeting. It was only on the Sunday morning tea break that the news got out that the Bali Bombing had happened and there was a plan to repatriate injured Australians to Darwin. So we finished off... the meeting and rushed off to make preparations for receiving the victims at the Royal Darwin Hospital. I was asked to coordinate the reception of the victims at Darwin Airport. We had every ambulance in the Northern Territory 10 in total - waiting there at that time. The first victims arrived on a Hercules plane late at night, 26 hours after the bombings happened. It was horrific going into the back of the aircraft. There were people stacked literally three high and five deep. Seeing the horrific injuries, I just snapped into medical doctor mode and organized staff to take them into the ambulances and send them to the hospital where they were ferried through the emergency department. Four Hercules airplanes arrived over a 24-hour period and a total of 65 people came through Darwin Hospital. It was an incredible national medical response. Every state in Australia responded and within 48 hours of the whole thing starting it had finished. Every medical retrieval jet in Australia in 2002 made its way to Darwin and evacuated injured people back to hospitals in their own respective states. #anaesthesialife #disasterresponse #northernterritory #medicalcareers Full article at https://www.eternalpossibilities.com.au/posts/brian-spain
