24.01.2022 SA: Please Share! 2 jobs with The Growing Space - Support Coordinator N/NE Suburbs of Adelaide and Home Researcher 1. Support Coordinator: Our northern Adelaide... team really want an extra person on board. We need someone ready to hit the ground running, so not a rookie this time, sorry. You've got to have experience as a Support Coordinator, LAC or Planner (if you are one of the last two we can rebuild you, it's ok). Maybe a service coordinator from a provider, but you need to have some excellent NDIS knowledge. You should be a disabled person or a family carer. You need to be fabulously self motivated, organised, passionate about disabled people living good lives, and thorough, and happy to work from home (we don't have an office). You need to have or get all the relevant clearances and stuff, and a reliable insured vehicle or transport. You need to read our website and have a decent scroll though our Facebook page and understand our perspectives on things. We are not a "typical" provider. You need to be able to commit to offering 25+ billable hours of work each week. We are open to contractor or employee model, whatever works for you - the important thing is that we're a good fit for each other. Start ASAP. $$ are at or above industry standards, and negotiable to a point. 2. Home Researcher: We're looking for someone for about 10-15 hours per week, to do "drop of a hat" research work online and by phone, from home. The role will be a bit like a PA for our coordinators who might call or email you and say "Please find me a few OTs available within 2 weeks in the western suburbs who specialise in equipment prescription for children", for example. You'll need to be quick online, a googlemeister and confident on the phone. You'll need to be able to confidently use Microsoft software and send emails that make sense. You need to be a pretty practical soul. We would especially like applications from disabled people..$30/hour casual. You will also need to have or get clearances etc. and be a good human. About Us - We're a team of about 25 disabled people and carers who work toward people with disability and families living better lives. Check our website for more, including our profiles. How to apply - please send an email with your CV and a cover letter to [email protected] Please don't ask questions here (but feel free to share or tag!), and read this post carefully before you apply to make sure you address our requirements.

19.01.2022 Silly words in the NDIS MyPlace Portal My Support Budget Page ...When you look at the portal and you half die, thinking there's no money left in your NDIS plan... because you've just started a new plan and the portal says: "Available Funds: $0.00" Wait, what?! The plan just started! "Available Funds: $0.00" "Allocated Funds: $133K" "Spent Funds: $2,467.91" "Approved Funds: $136K" So, if you are a Self Manager, that thing what says "Available Funds" is some kind of evil voodoo sh*t, because it DOES NOT MEAN that's what you have left in the plan. So, defying all common sense, the part that says "Allocated Funds" is actually what is left for you to spend in your plan for Self Managers, and for others, it's the amount taken up by service bookings, but not yet claimed. The nominee who sent me a screenshot called me in tears today, thinking her daughter's plan had been changed and they had lost all their funding. No. No. No. If you are PLAN Managed, you'll often find that your "Available funds" are nothing. Nada. Zip. What this means in *real* people speak, is that your Plan Manager has put in a service booking, "reserving" all of your funds so that they can make claims and pay your bills. They haven't actually taken your money at all. If you are Agency Managed, firstly, just quietly, please switch to Plan or Self Management, and secondly, the "Available Funds" only refers to what's left after your current Service Bookings (or "holds by providers") are taken out. Oh, and while I'm at it, has anyone noticed that the fortnightly transport payment has disappeared from the bar graph? Personally, I'm bummed, because that what what I used to use to see whether the rest of the funding is on track - it showed me where along the bar we are in relation to the length of the plan. I miss it. NDIA, please bring it back, or even better, add one for EVERYBODY that just shows, relatively, how far along in the plan we are, please. Here is how the NDIS (terribly) describes the silly words on the NDIS portal. There is no explanation of this in the NDIS Participant Portal Step by Step Guide. "My Support Budget page The My Support Budget page provides a summary of your current plan budget. It shows how your funds have been allocated or spent so far. It shows how much funding is available for your supports. It also includes quotable supports funding once NDIS has accepted a quote. Approved Funds Approved Funds is the approved budget in your current plan. It includes the stated supports. It also includes quotable supports funding once NDIS has accepted a quote. Spent Funds Spent Funds is the total amount NDIS has paid to you if you have self-managed support funding, or to your providers. Allocated Funds Allocated Funds is the total amount assigned to you if you have self-managed support funding. For other types of funding, it is the amount allocated to your providers. Available Funds Available Funds is the amount remaining in your plan that you can use for supports." This post is copyright of a grumpy Sam from The Growing Space. As if we didn't have enough rubbish to stress over, right? You're welcome to share this on Facebook, with credit and no edits. If you want to share it elsewhere, please ask, or I'll get grumpier. Picture descriptions are in the alt text for each image for screen readers, as per usual.

10.01.2022 During #NationalDEWeek2020 share the ‘Find a Developmental Educator’ website page to help others learn how they can find a DE! The DEAI lists Developmental Educ...ators, who are engaged as sole practitioners or who work for an agency, on the DEAI website as requested. This register was developed to assist NDIS Participants, families and other professionals to find the services of Developmental Educators. There are listings for most states in Australia and the list is steadily growing. Families, Planners, LACs and Support Coordinators often use this list to find a DE! Link to page: http://www.deai.com.au/developmental-educators-with-registe If you are a DE, or your business provides developmental education services, and you would like to be added to this list, please complete this online form: https://www.deai.com.au/find-a-developmental-educator-appli Image description: white background with words ‘FIND A DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATOR! middle and centre of the image in black font. 10.01.2022 NOT SURE ABOUT A CHOICE YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO MAKE? Here are some powerful questions to ask yourself: 1. Is this moving me forward?... 2. Do I feel more like myself? 3. Does this clear the way for more good stuff to show up? 4. Will I sleep peacefully tonight? 5. Would my kids, my best friend or my grandma be proud of me? Slow down and centre yourself to be sure you are honestly answering these questions. Take at least one full minute with some deep breaths to do this now. Now re-answer the questions. It can really help to do this with a trusted friend. BE HONEST. The truth will set you free.

06.01.2022 Continuing from last week’s posts about Integrity Care, and where we talked about self-managed supports, we note that all registered NDIS providers are required... to obtain an NDIS Worker Screening Check, but non-registered providers are not. Self-managed participants are able to request their unregistered providers obtain one of these Checks, however this is not compulsory. So it is important that people can get good information to grow their skills and confidence in how to choose providers with good credentials. Alongside options like asking for police checks, references, and the like, some simple strategies include self-managed participants being encouraged to arrange someone they trust to meet any new providers, or to be present at the first couple of meetings. We’ve heard that the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission is developing a NDIS Worker Screening Database. This will contain information about cleared and excluded workers and will support the national ongoing monitoring of the criminal history records of workers with clearances. It will be important for participants to be able to browse this database for the names of organisation directors/officers who were part of an agency that was deregistered/banned, to see if they’re involved with a provider the participant is thinking of using. Tell us in the comments below what other information you’d like to get from a database like this. ---- #NDISSupports #Safeguarding

03.01.2022 Life has left its scars on all of us. Some of us roll over and give up while others use those experiences as reason to succeed in life! Peter Borda explains, with PASSION, that you are the determining factor and most importantly that YOU CAN DO IT!!!

02.01.2022 What are Positive Behaviour Supports - PBS? I think these terms get thrown around a fair bit without a really strong understanding of what they actually mean. I'm guilty of this myself, but since working with a bunch of people with significant behavioural support needs, I'm learning more everyday. So, in layman's terms, what is PBS? It's a multi step process that starts with an evidence based (we have lots to prove it works) way of collecting and analysing information for eac...h individual, about the triggers for their behaviours, and what the person is communicating through the behaviour. Once that info is collected and understood, PBS works to help that person to find less damaging ways to express themselves, and alternative ways to communicate needs and frustrations. It also works hard to improve the life of the person, because often behaviours that are harmful to the person or those around them are a way to say "I'm bored" or "I don't like this activity" without using words (All behaviour is communication!!). A PBS plan will give concrete ideas and ways to prevent, reduce and respond to specific and general challenging behaviours across all areas of life, and if it's used consistently - at home, school, respite etc etc., it can make a HUGE difference in the person's quality of life. PBS doesn't happen overnight. It can be a long hard (not cheap) slog for everyone - especially for the person with challenging behaviour, but the results will be much longer lasting and far more worthwhile than some of the older punishment based ways of managing behaviour. NDIS funds can be used to develop a PBS Plan and implementation. Here's an awesome little six minute video that explains it better than I just did! Enjoy!
