23.01.2022 This week we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for #NAIDOCWeek. In episode 4 of #TheQuickUnpick we spoke to Sarah Sheridan the Director of Operations at @clothingthegap a Victorian Aboriginal owned and led social enterprise fashion label managed by health professionals. It might sound familiar to you. Clothing The Gap is actually a play on the words Closing the Gap, an Australian Government health initiative to help close the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal people and non-Indigenous Australians. Clothing The Gap unites non-Indigenous and Aboriginal people through fashion and causes, one of which is to help Close the Gap. 19.01.2022 The Making Of A Garment Meet the Patternmakers - Emma & Carly "Being a patternmaker requires a highly technical understanding of how a garment comes together. It also requires plenty of passion and engagement from beginning to end. It takes time to craft a garment from concept to bulk production, encouraging problem-solving and patience. I love that my role challenges my brain every day it keeps me on my toes." - Emma "The greatest strength I have would be attention... to detail, identifying all those subtle things that can easily be overlooked. Noticing and resolving these long before sampling means the garment will be constructed smoothly without any issues." - Carly View the full installation here: https://bit.ly/3vrsneg

18.01.2022 "Episode 5, The Quick Unpick @brittslist speaks to John Condilis from @nobodydenim The brand says that by manufacturing their garments locally and using their own denim factory and laundry, they keep jobs onshore and help keep the Australian textile, clothing and footwear manufacturing industry alive, employing more than 80 people. This model also allows Nobody Denim to shorten the brand’s supply chain, increase transparency and reduce travel to minimise the carbon footprint of each garment. https://spoti.fi/2Tg8F3u

13.01.2022 Today marks the start of our three day campaign with the Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Union to reach hidden garment workers who work for the Australian garment industry from home. Two outworkers Ghet and Nguyen who both sew from home shared their stories with @abcnews_au today and over the next three days outworkers can call in anonymously to compliance and outreach officers from the TCF Union in their language to find out about their rights and entitlements. This is an invaluable opportunity for outworkers to access support and share their stories. If you sew from home or know someone who does you can find out more about the campaign and where to call here: https://bit.ly/32WrwFX

13.01.2022 The Making Of A Garment Step Four - Patternmaking Patternmakers Emma and Carly begin by choosing a base pattern or block, from their library, seeking the ideal tried and tested silhouette for the dress. This bespoke pattern library has been built over thirty years, developed, and refined with input from The Ark’s master patternmakers. The pattern is tweaked by hand to perfect the design, fit, and drape. Dress pieces are formed into a ‘jigsaw’, architecturally crafted in the... most efficient way to create minimal waste. The jigsaw is printed in-house, and Lily pins it to the dress fabric, cutting the individual pieces out with precision. View the full exhibition here: https://bit.ly/3vrsneg

10.01.2022 Did you know that our accreditation program checks all points in the supply chain from design to dispatch? Compliance Officers from the TCF Union work closely with businesses during the accreditation process to ensure that each worker and process within the supply chain is legally compliant with Australian workplace law This includes all in-house and outsourced operations and any homeworkers employed by the business. When you buy from an ECA accredited business you can be sure that your garment is made ethically Image: @farndesigns

09.01.2022 Attention ECA accredited businesses In June this year, the Fair Work Commission announced a 1.75% increase to the minimum wage. 06.01.2022 A big shout out and thank you to all of our local garment makers who made our clothes, masks, scrubs, leisure wear (and much more) in the year that was 2020. Their efforts did not go un-noticed, this year we were all reminded of how important our local textile, clothing and footwear industry is. Buying ethically and locally not only supports Australian businesses but the rights and safety of the workers behind our clothes. We are looking forward to continuing to support ethical businesses and advocating for workers rights in 2021! Image: @nobodydenim
