25.01.2022 We love this time of year when the weather is warmer and we have the opportunity to get out on some of Victoria’s golf courses to inspect (and sometimes play!). The natural turf surfaces have definitely benefited from the lock downs and limited play, but so have our native roughs with golf courses pushing the regeneration of the indigenous flora. Well done to Sally Benwell and her staff, along with the Frankston City Council for this work on the back 9 holes at Centenary Park Golf Course. #golf #nativeflora #agronomy

25.01.2022 ETP Turf was recently involved with the major redevelopment of 2 school ovals at Bayside Secondary College Paisley Campus, in Altona North. This redevelopment was organised and funded by Hobsons Bay City Council, overseen during the construction by Dean Lenehan from Council with assistance from ETP Turf, and constructed by RMS Groundworks & Construction. When you consider the limited room for sporting activities before the redevelopment, the transformation is nothing short o...f amazing! The huge open space sports field that now exists consists of a sand based profile with a network of subsurface drains, and an automatic irrigation system where all water is collected and can be recycled. The surface was grassed with couch in autumn and there was not a lot of time for the surface to establish before winter. It is expected to mature and develop into a hard wearing surface over the coming summer. The huge one way slope that now exists allows the surface to be used for a huge variety of sporting activities, from rugby and football to AFL and cricket. This sports field will become a huge asset for the local community in the future. #agronomy #education #sportsdesign #fieldofplay #sports

24.01.2022 2020... what a year it has been! Whilst the sports and event industry took a hit this year because of COVID-19, it was great to see the adoption of digital events and online networking that really helped keep our industry connected. ETP TURF are proud to have supported the Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) Research Awards at the VIC/TAS Seminar + and the National PLA event, along with our respective board member roles with the Sports Turf Association - VIC and PLA (VIC). ...We look forward to continuing our support of key industry events throughout 2021 and hope to see the events industry back on its feet, stronger than ever before. #parksandrecreation #events #agronomy

24.01.2022 A quick update from the ETP TURF team down at our R. F. Miles Recreation Reserve project where everything is progressing along very well. The new football ovals irrigation and drainage installation is well underway and the new state-of-the-art clubrooms and pavilion will be an impressive addition to the western wing. We can also see the netball court and practice cricket wicket facilities also taking shape. No doubt Seaford Football Netball Club and Seaford Cricket Club are looking forward to moving back to their home in the not too distant future. Well done to all involved in this massive project Evergreen Turf, Lloyd Group and Frankston City Council #agronomy #sports #football #cricket #turfmanagement

24.01.2022 One of the challenges of doing irrigation audits at this time of year is the dogs and their owners! At King George Oval #2 ETP Turf set up to do the catch can test and a hungry black Labrador stole our catch can container and ran around with it for 20 minutes while the owner chased to no avail. Not even the bribe of food worked! Eventually, we got the container back from the dog, and as luck would have it, some amusement was found in seeing our David McGeary getting drenched... in water spray as he navigated around the sprinkler heads to complete the testing. Sometimes all we can do is laugh #agronomy #funny #sportsfield #irrigation

24.01.2022 As part of ETP TURF’s recent agronomic auditing, our findings of normally popular A-grade fields this year are quite different from that of previous years. The absence of winter competitions due to Covid-19 has left a majority of sports grounds in a better condition than usual in readiness for the commencement of the cricket season and the eventual return of football and AFL. Whilst it has been disappointing to not have our usual community and elite sports in the mix for much... of 2020, it’s great to know that our 2021 seasons are starting with excellent quality sporting fields. When was the last time you had your sports field audited? Connect with ETP-TURF today to ensure the integrity of your natural turf sports field is maintained throughout the season and is in the best condition possible for the return of sport. #agronomy #cricket #sports #turfmanagement

24.01.2022 Aeration works were taking place recently at Boss James Reserve as part of their regular spring maintenance practices. Coring is used to open the turf profile to allow air, moisture and nutrients to get into the roots. Coring also prevents the build-up of thatch material which can become problematic if not maintained correctly. The coring process leaves small plugs behind and the machine in the video below is used to remove them from the surface. Connect with us today for spe...cialised agronomic advice you can trust. #agronomy #turfmanagement #fieldofplay

23.01.2022 As we observe a hint of growth happening now that it’s spring, it is an ideal time to review renovation needs particularly when it comes to organic matter (OM) management. Excessive levels of OM leads to turf surfaces becoming vulnerable to a host of secondary problems such as disease, wet wilt, soft surfaces, poor resilience, playability and vigour, poor root growth, black layer, and more frequent high-temperature injury. ETP Turf have undertaken Loss on Ignition (LOI) test...ing for a number of clients in recent months so the levels of OM can be quantified, monitored and adjustments to renovation practices made accordingly. The attached pictures show a couch field that has recently been fraze mown to remove excessive levels of OM that was capping the slit drainage system and impacting on the fields performance during the wetter parts of the year. This is one way to tackle OM, but with each site being different, for the best management strategy contact ETP Turf where our experienced and technical agronomists can review your natural turf surface and assist with evidenced based recommendations to benchmark OM levels and implement the right strategies for its management. #agronomy #sportsfields #turfmanagement #parksandrecreation

22.01.2022 Over the last few weeks we have seen a considerable amount of Red Thread disease. The presence of this disease often indicates that the turf is growing poorly and is ‘hungry’ and in need of a good feed. These are typical conclusions when Red Thread disease is found in cool season grass surfaces such as ryegrass however, interestingly we have seen more on couch this winter. The long periods of wetness on the canopy combined with poor growing turf undoubtedly has favoured the ...disease this year. Often when it is in cool season grasses, we recommend a fertiliser which is often enough to get on top of the disease. However, in the case of couch turf as it is not currently growing due to dormancy, it will not respond to fertilising at this stage. To find out how to address Red Thread in your natural turf, connect with our experienced team of Agronomists today to prevent the problem deteriorating any further. #agronomy #disease #sports #fieldofplay

22.01.2022 Dust suppression particularly during the Spring & Summer season is an important issue to address during sports field reconstructions. As seen in this video taken at WLJ Crofts Reserve water carts are being used to spray over the dirt to prevent it from being blown around the site. Dust management is essential for construction sites in areas of heavy population density before the natural turf has been laid, however water trucks is just one of various treatment options that ca...n be used. Listening to the audio, you can tell how windy it can get out in the middle of a sports field! This Hobsons Bay City Council project is really coming along thanks to the wonderful and efficient work of @Travis Cummings from Turfcare & Hire. #agronomy #construction #design #sports

21.01.2022 Rhizoctonia disease often rears its head anywhere from spring to autumn when the turf is under some type of stress. Typical stresses could include moisture, nutrient, wear and low mowing. Rhizoctonia is predominantly a root disease and damage is not normally evident until the damage to the root system is excessive and as a result can be difficult to turn around immediately once identified. Control of Rhizoctonia disease requires a combination of fungicides and careful manag...ement for best results. These include deep aeration and watering for effective penetration of fungicides to the sites of disease infections in the roots as well as sensible mowing height and fertilising to assist recovery. For professional advice on how to manage and care for your natural turf sports fields, connect with ETP TURF today. #agronomy #disease #sports #turfmanagement

20.01.2022 It is with great pleasure that we share yet another special milestone this month as Deb Couturier celebrates her 12th year with ETP-TURF!! Happy Work-I-Versary Deb!! When we asked Deb what she has enjoyed most during her time with ETP-TURF, she said "It's definitely been the people i work with and the family culture here. The fun social times like planning lunches, Christmas get togethers and the Friday afternoon drinks - both online and in person, they're always s...o much fun. One highlight would also be having worked with Grant Greenway since the beginning and helping to build a business that offers a safe, professional, friendly work environment for me and all the ETP Turf team." Well said Deb! Happy Work-I-Versary again and cheers to you and all your wonderful contributions over the 12 years. #teamspirit #workanniversary #milestones #agronomy #celebrateyourstaff #staffappreciation

19.01.2022 Spring has sprung! Hopefully some light at the end of the tunnel with stage 4 restrictions but nevertheless despite our facilities being in a state of flux like us, the grass still grows. Now is the perfect time to undertake a health check on your turf whether it be nutrition analyses of both soil and plant tissue, a condition audit of your surfaces to benchmark before play returns, or as one of our clients is doing - review profile organic matter (OM) levels pre reno...vation. Organic matter levels are best quantified using the Loss on Ignition test with testing done at various depths within the profile. The results enable us to provide definitive recommendations with regard to renovation needs and by monitoring OM levels over time decisions are made with the support of data and not just by calendar or because it’s the way it has always been done. For professional evidence based agronomic advice from our experienced team Jim Porter, Mitch Tyas, David McGeary or Grant Greenway, don’t delay - connect with us today! #agronomy #sports #communitysports #education #turfmanagement

19.01.2022 Couch Management Over Winter The left image was taken in April 2020 and the right image was captured in July 2020. This winter in Melbourne metropolitan areas, where there has been a good couch grass cover, combined with a mowing height of about 20-22mm and minimal surface use, the couch grass has remained viable and green inside the turf canopy. Now that we are out of Winter, this couch grass should quickly come out of dormancy in spring and gives us a huge insig...ht as to how well a surface will be, if we can minimise wear and damage over winter. Come early Spring with normal maintenance practices this surface will again be in a prime playing condition. #agronomy #sports #winter #fieldofplay

19.01.2022 Excellent work by HG Turf in collaboration with the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as they introduce this unique technology to Australia and produce a wonderful canvas in support of the 2 Victorian teams competing in the AFL Grand Final. 19.01.2022 Project managing large sports field projects usually requires us to work in and around various trades and the development of other site infrastructure. Over at our WLJ Crofts Reserve project with Hobsons Bay City Council, we can see in this video the installation of foundations (pylons) into the soil that will support the new building infrastructure. It’s quite fascinating to see all the different areas of a new facility build taking shape, and from a holistic perspective how... sophisticated and innovative designs can support the overall success of a sporting facility. We are delighted to be apart of this project, can’t wait to see it completed and surely the surrounding community can’t either! #agronomy #construction #sports

18.01.2022 A wonderful wrap up to this years VIC/TAS Parks and Leisure Australia SEMINAR+ event with some brilliant insights and presentations from the Day 2 speakers today. The 3 streams of Sport, Leisure and Parks/Open Space all delivered wonderful demonstrations of research, planning, analysis and predictions about the future of sports participation and facility activation. With the recent effects of COVID-19 across Australia, attendees had a great opportunity to learn and discuss th...e current changes in sporting participation along with the growth of informal and group driven sporting activities for different age groups, culturally diverse communities and dense population areas. Although there were 3 distinctive streams in play today, the comments by #AFL's Shayne Ward for creating facilities that are well positioned, welcoming, accessible and fit for purpose were a clear take away from many of the presentations today, and great advice for ALL approaching the design and development of new fields of play. 11.01.2022 The mystery of the sub-base works at Moorabbin West Oval It’s always interesting to discover old buried treasures or learn a little about the history of the site from sub-base and shaping works during an oval reconstruction. 10.01.2022 ETP TURF recently attended an interesting site visit to identify and resolve a concern with a local sports field experiencing wet spots in 2 particular areas of the ground. As well as the normal tools of investigation including profile sampling, soil testing and a survey, sometimes a good first step can be to do a ‘desktop audit’ of the site. Aerial photography during construction can help capture variability with soil types and the extent and type of infrastructure being ins...talled. In this instance no such luck and the problem has come to the table now in one of the wettest years for some time. Looking at the Nearmap shots of 2010 and 2020 the inconsistency has been around for some time. 600mm test holes across the site show some variation in soil type but more significant is the presence of ground water test in certain areas. This data and a review of the survey will confirm our findings and complete the first stage of the project including recommendations The Site Investigation. #agronomy #sports #football #AFL #soiltesting

08.01.2022 New field assistant Erin was out with Mitch Tyas at Sandbelt Industries in Lang Lang recently for quality control testing of rootzone sand to be used for a current oval reconstruction being supervised by ETP TURF. Erin had the fun but somewhat gruelling task of climbing the cones of rootzone sand to take representative check samples of the stockpiles as one of the key stages of quality control. A great little workout for your legs!! The testing of the rootzone sand stockpiles... at the quarry is one of the important quality control steps in the supply of what is a significant cost input for the construction of a sports field. It is important that this check testing is done early to avoid unnecessary construction delays on site, ensure the quality is in line with the technical specifications and the investment clients make is realised for any new or reconstructed sports field project. 06.01.2022 One of the most important stages during the reconstruction of a new oval is the sub-base shaping works as seen in this video at Moorabbin West Oval. It’s one of the best parts of our jobs working with experienced civil contractors who really know how to make it happen like Michael Tonks - owner of @All Trim Civil who has been doing the sub-base shaping on this project for Evergreen Turf Group. It’s quite a unique talent being able to not over-work a surface, then quickly adap...t to changes in climatic conditions whilst dodging submerged concrete blocks and train wheels! Plus to top it off, the boys from All Trim Civil and @Evergreen Turf Group are professional, polite and always up for a chat and a laugh as the project develops and the design comes to fruition. #agronomy #sports #sportssurfaces #naturalturf #fieldofplay

06.01.2022 It is not always practical for local government authorities to undertake large scale upgrades on their sports fields all of the time to accommodate growing demands. As example the No.2 oval at bayside oval at Bayside P-12 College Williamstown campus was one such ground that recently underwent a quick re-alignment and minor first stage redevelopment. With limited funding, Hobsons Bay City Council in conjunction with ETP Turf was able to increase the oval footprint so it could... be utilised for training by local football clubs (VFLW Williamstown) along with the local community. This is a great case study to show what can be achieved when only limited resources are available and you involve the right team of people to help make the vision a reality. 06.01.2022 Chemical and Pesticide use and how not to over-do it! Pesticides are legitimate and useful tools in controlling turf pests and disease. However, there are significant risks associated with pesticide user that every use should be aware of. Pesticides can cause harm to humans, non-target organisms, add to pollution, pest resistance and must be used very carefully and sparingly. Here are some other helpful suggestions if you are going to use them:... 1. Correctly identify the pest problem and the circumstances for the problem. 2. Select the correct pesticide. 3. Always use turf registered products. 4. Follow all label and application instructions. 5. Check environmental circumstances and proceed only if they are suitable. 6. Keep records of all pesticide applications. 7. Make sure the person using the pesticide is properly trained and protected. 8. 06.01.2022 Our talented Field Assistant Erin is getting plenty of variety in her first month with ETP TURF out in the field. From using our Clegg Hammer one day for field assessment to climbing and sampling newly made cones of sand for current construction projects to troubleshooting drainage issues on a local reserve there is no shortage of variety in this role. In amongst the assessments, an interesting finding with the drainage was identified.... 80mm of root mat consisting of organic matter and soil above the drainage sand is an obvious but all too common issue as to why drainage systems fail when the connection between the drains profile and surface is lost due to this build up. Regular renovation to the appropriate depth and the use of suitable topdressing sand are the keys for a drainage systems longevity. 04.01.2022 At a recent new project pre-construction meeting I had the pleasure to meet one of SPORTENG'S young guns Cameron Nayar who is a qualified designer and we were a...ble to have a bit of a laugh on what was a beautiful Melbourne spring day. It’s not typical that ETP Turf and SPORTENG staff would meet on a project, but it does happen every now and again, and in this instance the design works have been expertly done by Cameron for the construction contractor RMS Groundworks & Construction to carry out. 03.01.2022 Quite often there is a balancing act with regards to improving a sportsfield surface in an upgrade project when there is a limited amount of room to start with. The removal of one or more trees below will allow a larger and more practical sportsfield footprint to be created on the site. However, there is an environmental impact not only on the site, but with the residents adjoining the site too. Think carefully before making the decision on tree removal. For example, do all... trees have to be removed, do we remove just a few, can they be relocated to another area of the facility or do we accept a smaller sportsfield footprint? If you're unsure about any of the above when it comes to your sportsfield project, connect with ETP-TURF today. Our experienced team are here to help. #football #agronomy #sportsfield #sports

02.01.2022 Grant Greenway from ETP Turf attend a site visit at Briagolong Recreation Reserve recently on what was a pretty glorious Melbourne sunny day. 01.01.2022 For all those in the process of planning your next natural turf sports field, just remember..... Good planning is worth its weight in gold. Avoid making costly and silly mistakes by adequately planning for the future of your sports facility. One of the most common mistakes we see is the reconstruction of a sports field, without any provision given to future irrigation or sub-surface drainage upgrades. Unless you want to rip up the turf again at a later date, make sure you lay... the groundwork while the surface is being constructed. Speak to the experienced design team at ETP Turf to ensure your planning for immediate and future success. #agronomy #sportsturf #sportsindustry #irrigation #irrigationdesign #etpturf
