23.01.2022 This Asbestos Awareness Week make sure you're asbestos aware - it lurks in more places than you might think. Asbestos becomes dangerous once the fibres are disturbed, become airborne and then inhaled. This can happen if you’re sanding, drilling, cutting or sawing asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and inhaling asbestos fibres can cause a number of life-threatening diseases including pleural disease, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.... Don't risk the possible health effects of asbestos exposure. The World Health Organization says there is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. Watch this video about asbestos exposure in the workplace here: https://vimeo.com/446982099 Please contact your state branch of the ETU if you think you have been exposed to asbestos or are faced with an asbestos related issue within your workplace.

12.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The ETU condemns all forms of violence against women. Violence and harassment can happen anywhere, including at work. If you see something that doesn't seem right, speak up, because there's no excuse for abuse. To learn more about the experiences of women in the trades, we encourage our members to sign up to a virtual screening of 'Women in Steel' tomorrow 26 November at 7pm AEDT. ... 'Women in Steel' tells the story of the courageous women of the Wollongong Steelworks in the 1980s who refused to accept discrimination and took their fight to the highest court in the country. They changed the rules for women throughout Australia. Watch the trailer and get tickets here: https://fan-force.com/scr/women-of-steel-virtual-screening/

11.01.2022 Hands off Filipino Trade Unions! Today we join the Global Day of Action in solidarity with unions in the Philippines. Since the Duterte administration came into power, attacks on human and trade union rights in the Philippines have escalated.... Fifty people, just like you and me, have been murdered by extra-judicial violence and countless more have been 'red-tagged' by the government, simply for standing up for their rights. They are spied on, portrayed as terrorists and unjustly detained. Recent legislation called the 'Anti-Terrorism' Act seeks to further threaten the rights of workers to organise. Today we gather alongside other unions around Australia and internationally, to support Filipino unionists who are staying strong in the face of incredible pressure. #handsofftradeunionsph #nototerrorlawph Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA

08.01.2022 We're arguing for a 3.5% increase - or $26.38 per week to the minimum wage. While profits for business have recovered, wage growth is still record low. Once aga...in the employers are arguing for pay cuts/freezes for Australia's lowest paid workers. If we want our economy to recover, working people need enough money to spend and that means the minimum wage must increase.

08.01.2022 Well done to our members in South Australia for uniting together to improve their wages and conditions at SA Power Networks! Keep fighting for your rights!

04.01.2022 Today's report from the Victorian Inquiry into Nuclear Prohibition has proven once again what we have always known - that renewables are the key to lowering emi...ssions from energy and that there is no future for nuclear in our state. A shout-out to Nina Taylor MP for her work on the inquiry. We thank the Victorian Labor Government for their ongoing commitment to the prohibition on nuclear and their dedicated investment into renewable energy.

03.01.2022 This Asbestos Awareness Week the ETU is reminding all our members to be asbestos aware - it lurks in more places than you’d think. Work health and safety laws prohibit work involving asbestos apart from in specific circumstances where you are required to follow strict safety rules. The law may also prevent you from removing asbestos yourself, and if you are allowed, you must follow strict safety precautions and use the right Personal Protective Equipment.... Commercial and public buildings built before a certain date are required to have an asbestos register but that’s not the case for homes, even though they are often workplaces too. Where might asbestos be in a home? You can find out here: https://www.asbestossafety.gov.au/find-out-ab/asbestos-home Please contact your state branch of the ETU if you think you have been exposed to asbestos or are faced with an asbestos related issue within your workplace.

02.01.2022 Anthony Albanese will repeal union demerger laws if he becomes prime minister, with the policy to be enshrined in the ALP’s policy platform at next week’s virtual national conference. The move from the Labor leader will mean the mining and energy division of the CFMEU will be able to use the Morrison government’s laws passed with bipartisan support in parliament in December to break away from the militant construction division, but an Albanese government would prevent b...Continue reading

02.01.2022 The renewable energy sector is growing rapidly, but we’re also seeing a rapid rise in exploitation and insecure jobs in the sector. It’s time for Government and industry to step up and provide good quality and secure renewable energy jobs.

02.01.2022 Asbestos lurks in more places than you'd think. Prior to 1990, asbestos was used in over 3,000 products, many of which were in residential construction or fitout. Work health and safety (WHS) laws prohibit work involving asbestos apart from in specific circumstances where you are required to follow strict safety rules.... You wouldn’t do electrical wiring without training, and the same is true for handling or removing any asbestos. It’s always safer and usually cheaper too to call in an asbestos professional. Please contact your state branch of the ETU if you think you have been exposed to asbestos or are faced with an asbestos related issue within your workplace.
