24.01.2022 OMNIBUS BILL UPDATE The Morrison Government has paved the way for wage theft and further casualisation of the workforce in a gutted version of their IR Omnibus ...Bill that passed through the Senate today. Morrison has shown his true colours by attacking the casual workforce instead of using this opportunity to protect Australian workers and create more secure employment, said Allen Hicks, ETU National Secretary. It’s a shameful move which further disempowers so many working Australians, he said. The laws passed today will allow employers to determine who is a casual employee and mean that workers who seek conversion to full-time have no capacity to challenge a refusal in the Fair Work Commission. Despite these shameful changes, the whole of the Omnibus Bill did not pass the Senate. Because of the efforts of Unions, working Australians, The ALP, The Greens, Senator Jacqui Lambie and Senator Rex Patrick, we were able to block significant proposed measures. These included the creation of Greenfields agreements which would have allowed workers to be locked into substandard wages and conditions for 8 years and changes to how enterprise agreements are made. Thanks to all Australians who stood up and had their say. Because of you we were able to defeat some of the worst elements of this Bill," said Mr Hicks. To the Liberal party and crossbencher politicians who supported this bill, we will not forget your lack of integrity and your actions which have thrown ordinary working people under the bus. We will never stop fighting for the rights of workers, their families and the communities in which they live.

18.01.2022 A message from the West Gate Bridge Memorial Committee: On the 15th of October each year, we gather to remember Australia’s worst industrial accident, its 35 vi...ctims, its 18 survivors, the families that it affected, and all the brave workers who risked everything to recover the dead and injured. However, because of the current pandemic and government restrictions, we are not organising a 50th anniversary memorial this year. We will be postponing this special event until next year: October 15, 2021. We understand that some people will be disappointed, but under the current circumstances, it is the right thing to do. We look forwarding to seeing you in 2021 - at the West Gate Memorial site, beneath the bridge at 11.30am.
17.01.2022 On this day, the 15th of October in 1970, Melbourne's West Gate Bridge collapsed, claiming the life of 35 workers. The event remains the most catastrophic workp...lace disaster in Australia's history. Please join us as we remember those workers who didn't come home to their families, and reflect on how the impact of the event is still felt across Australia to this day.

17.01.2022 The industrial action involving 150 members of the ETU, AMWU and UWU at the Lactalis Bendigo manufacturing site has ended with agreement being reached on the terms of the new site Enterprise Agreement. The action lasted ten days. The terms of settlement significantly increase wages and improve employment security. The following is a summary of key improvements in this new Agreement: - The new Agreement will have a 33 months life, nominally concluding on 30th June 2023.... - The wages of maintenance tradespersons will increase by 10% (3.64% on an annualised basis). - A further significant increase in wage payments for casual maintenance tradespersons. - Increased penalty rate payments for employees rostered to work on public holidays. - A commitment from the company to again employ electrical and mechanical trades apprentices. It is many years since the site last had an apprentice. - Approximately 30 labour hire casual production workers will now become permanent in-house Lactalis employees. A large number of these workers had been engaged on a labour hire basis for many years. Additionally, going forward, new tight guidelines will apply concerning the engagement of labour hire personnel. This is the first time significant industrial action has taken place at this manufacturing site. In taking this action, two 24 hour a day protest sites were manned at the main gates of the site. ETU members are pleased with the improvements achieved for tradespersons. Our members are also particularly pleased to have participated in a dispute that has resulted in a large number of production labour hire workers now having secure permanent employment. The members of all three unions need to be congratulated for collectively taking such a strong stand and the results that have been achieved. #UnionPower #UnionWin

15.01.2022 Victorian Workers may be interested in West Gate Bridge Disaster: the Untold Stories, and new documentary about the collapse of the West Gate Bridge and the aft...ermath, which will by on Nine tomorrow night. From the producers: Presented by Shane Jacobson, it is the first documentary ever made about one of the most tragic and monumental events in Australia’s history. While many people have heard of the West Gate Bridge collapse, very few have heard the detailed stories of what really happened that terrible day in 1970 and the fallout on the familes of the workers who died needlessly. This was an avoidable tragedy that killed 35 men, widowed 28 women, and left 88 children without fathers. But what happened afterwards was also an immense tragedy and a scar in our history books that is rarely reflected upon. However, the bridge catastrophe led to significant industrial reform that transformed workplace safety laws and strengthened the role of trade unions. Thanks to the victims’ ultimate sacrifice, an engineering disaster like this is unlikely to ever happen again. The survivors and the shattered families have never fully told their intimate stories of survival, grief, injustice, reform even pride until now, on the 50th anniversary of the disaster. Shane Jacobson was born in Melbourne’s western suburbs the same year the West Gate Bridge collapsed. His passion for this story drives the narrative and also secures the exclusive access to those who reveal the incredible and sometimes shocking accounts of the tragedy. This is a dark piece of Australian history that should be remembered and respected for its impact both then and on our lives today. At 11.50am on October 15, 1970, two years into its construction, Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge collapsed when a 2,000-tonne section broke off and plunged 50 metres to the water below, taking with it the lives of 35 construction workers. Fifty years on, we finally tell the whole story of what really went wrong that day, how the disaster led to big changes in industrial safety laws, and how the bridge was salvaged to become one of Melbourne’s vital transport links. More importantly, we reveal the poignant story of the survivors and their families: how they have managed to forge mateship and find rare strength through the adversity of this crushing tragedy. West Gate Bridge Disaster: The Untold Stories is an intimate and compelling documentary about the strength, endurance and camaraderie of its key characters, including many survivors speaking publicly for the first time. We hear the stories of those who lived to tell the tale and remember the sacrifice of those who didn’t.

13.01.2022 The Morrison government is trying to pass legislation that would deny workers #AFairDaysPay and take away their overtime. If the government's first and 'preferr...ed' option passes, hospitality & retail workers - like Hanna and Helena - would be asked to work extra hours without overtime pay. If the government's second, more drastic option passes, a whole new employment category will be created for all workers. This new category would take needed overtime wages away from part-time workers across the country. Workers like Barry, Yusef, Julie, and Tranh, who depend on their overtime wages for their future plans. Read more here: http://bit.ly/AFDP_brief

08.01.2022 ETU SAFETY ALERT On Tuesday the 10th of November, a worker on a building site in Melbourne received an electric shock after touching a screw while waiting for an Alimak. The screw, which was holding up laminated COVID-safe signage, went through a timber wall and penetrated an active live cable.... The worker was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital for assessment. All sites should conduct a site audit with your safety committee, including your CFMEU and PPTEU delegates, on all hoists and any other wall that has live cables behind it. Check all screws, fixings and penetrations to ensure nothing is live. Moving forward, hoist companies and site management will need to ensure that cables are as far away as practicable from any wall likely to need signage screwed into it. Warning signage must be installed where live cables are already located behind a wall if the cables can’t be relocated. WorkSafe will be attending the site today and making their own recommendations. Contact your Organiser for further information or guidance.

02.01.2022 Today's report from the Victorian Inquiry into Nuclear Prohibition has proven once again what we have always known - that renewables are the key to lowering emissions from energy and that there is no future for nuclear in our state. A shout-out to Nina Taylor MP for her work on the inquiry. We thank the Victorian Labor Government for their ongoing commitment to the prohibition on nuclear and their dedicated investment into renewable energy.
