23.01.2022 the next get together is on this Sunday 6th May ~ 08.30 to 10.00

23.01.2022 Dear all, Well it’s that time of year again. Eudlo Seed Savers will be meeting as usual at Roy and Jackie’s next Sunday 2 December 2018 between 8.30 and 10.00 am.... If you have any seed to process please bring it and we’ll fit that in with the Christmas cake and coffee. It has been a bit of a rocky year for the group but we’re determined that 2019 will be brighter on all fronts. If you can spare an hour next Sunday please come along and share some Christmas cheer. Look forward to seeing you. kind regards Deb Frost

13.01.2022 Green manure offers a sustainable way of improving your soil year on year for very little effort, and this article explains how to begin.

12.01.2022 Hi folks, I am looking not for seeds but for seed growers interested in producing larger quantities of open-pollinated heirloom seed for income. My heirloom seed business relies on a network of growers and this year demand is high but due to drought and bushfire, many seed crops have failed. I am mainly looking for cucumber, melon, pumpkin, corn and capsicum seed but you are welcome to contact me about other seeds. The basic criteria to be a seed grower is understanding pollination requirements and keeping good records of the variety being grown. I am passionate about maintaining the availability of heirloom open-pollinated seed in Australia and would appreciate your help. Kind regards Frances CEO Green Harvest Organic Gardening Supplies

12.01.2022 Growing your own plants from seed is an exciting and satisfying journey, but many small details can make the difference to your success. Planning is vital - before sowing, decide on how to give your seedlings the best start in life, and you'll be rewarded with healthy, abundant results.

08.01.2022 Food security alert: Australia, home to 1 in every 10 species of birds on Earth. Yet gardeners and farmers choose to harm birds by using neonicotinoid pesticide...s. It's not just about us and them. Some gardening 'experts' still promote these synthetic poisons, part of a toxic culture that threatens our way of life. Confidor is the Australian gardener's favourite bee and bird-killing poison. Crown is another neonicotinoid poison used to treat seed, making seedlings toxic. There's a range of these stealthy poisons. Research shows traces 'within acceptable levels' are found in food. Research also proves this group of poisons: * linger in plants longer than manufacturers claim; * accumulate in pollen and nectar; * are found in waterways and can devastate aquatic ecology; * bees become addicted to contaminated pollen; * contaminated pollen affects the ability of bees to navigate, contributing to colony collapse disorder; * insects contaminated with these poisons and fed to baby birds harm and kill them, leading to plummeting bird populations, especially in Europe and the USA; Research now shows that adult birds contaminated by neonicotinoid poisons also lose their ability to navigate, affecting migratory birds. Up until the 1980's, gardeners and farmers could use nicotine soap, a botanical pesticide, for similar purposes. I used it in a production nursery. Multinational chemical corporations lobbied governments to ban nicotine soap, opening up global markets to their profitable, patented synthetic poisons. Lobbying by multinationals, abdication of responsibility by politicians, collusion by horticultural 'experts' and an apathetic public are a recipe for disaster. The European Union enacted a temporary ban, now being peeled back thanks to lobbying. Half of wildlife has been lost in the past forty years. Neonicotinoid pesticides and the toxic political culture that enables their continued use is a threat to a threat to public health, a threat to food security and a threat to biodiversity. * Please note that in Australia it is illegal to make your own nicotine soap. 06.01.2022 Experimental border report on Earth Day 2018. The BOM forecast a warmer than average autumn for south eastern Australia, so on Gardening Australia I planted and... sowed an experimental border to see if I could get a second round of summer crops. In previous years, I've posted about getting my heaviest crops of snake bean, Madagascar bean and Chinese spinach soonest after sowing them on Australia Day. Last year I sowed corn two months after the last date recommended for Queensland in the 1950's. I had cobs ready to pick during my May Open Day. This year, I sowed with the same intent. We have no choice but to adapt to the changing climate and conditions. Fixed sowing dates are a liability. If autumn is to be the second summer, grow appropriate crops. Don't be tied to traditions of a climate that will never exist again. For the past three weeks I've been enjoying stir fry with golden cosmos, jute, miniature chilli and luffa. Tonight it's pasta with pesto, but I can't decide if it will be with cinnamon basil or lemon basil. Happy (experimental) Earth Day :-) Earth Day 2018, see: https://www.earthday.org Gardening Australia
