23.01.2022 The Baffle Gold apiary sites have been a little quiet the past month. The bees are still recovering from both the smoke (the local fires last month put them in survival mode) and the heat (which has claimed a few hives). We are hopeful that if we get some rain soon, they will be back to producing the honey that we all love. We were also sad to hear of the loss of a fellow Baffle beekeeper who not only lost his home, equipment and income, but also what I estimate to be over 5 million bees, stored honey, and beekeeping equipment. This is a double emotional blow for George, as every hive is a monument of many hours of dedication to maintain healthy, happy colonies. We wish George and his family well in recovering from this terrible event.
22.01.2022 With a winter that virtually didn't exist this year, the bees are enjoying the out of season flowers. This pic shows a good indication that the bees are happy and busy collecting pollen from our flowering trees.
21.01.2022 Although our hive numbers have almost halved during the drought; following the fires last November, we continue to look after our bees and treat them like royalty. They are precious, and need to be looked after and fed to get them through these weather conditions. At any time during the day, many of our bees are at waters edge at our dam. At this rate though, honey supply will continue to be low. Please support the Australian Honey producers. Our bees needs your support. https://www.google.com.au//s/amp.abc.net./article/11657586

19.01.2022 Sad news, we have had a heatwave fatality. One hive happy yesterday morning, gone today. Thousands of bees dead. Very sad for us here at Baffle Gold Apiaries. Hoping this heat eases. The pic below are deceased worker bees. There are three times this amount in the bottom box including the queen.

16.01.2022 This doesn't look good. Another hive has become a victim of the heat.
16.01.2022 Baffle Gold Honey wishes to thank our customers for their patience. Our honey is currently temporarily unavailable. Firstly the fires at Baffle Creek late November caused our bees to go into survival mode. Adding to the problem is our unseasonal lack of rain. Sadly all the good predicted rain hasn't eventuated, affecting beekeepers in our region. This has resulted in slow honey production, and the bees surviving on their own honey supplies. We look forward to again supplying our valued customers with the raw, local honey we all love.
14.01.2022 Looking for some Baffle Gold Honey! In store at The Junction Cafe Tannum Sands, and Foodworks Agnes Water.
14.01.2022 Drought conditions are causing rapid declines in bee populations, however everyone can help. By planting hardy drought tolerant plants like lavander, you are doing your bit for our environment. Bees particularly like yellow tone and blue tone flowers.
10.01.2022 Thankyou for the many concerned messages we have received regarding the fires at Baffle Creek. So far we are ok. The fire is about 5klm from our property and the bees are ok. We are extremely thankful to the fire fighters who are doing so much to keep people and property safe. We have irrigation sprinklers running at the house and over the beehives to keep them cool and to keep the surrounding area wet in case things change.
06.01.2022 At Baffle Gold, it saddens us to see the struggles of not only our bees, but those of other beekeepers in the area. Low rainfall the first 6 months of this year has had a negative impact for honey bees. To give you an idea, in 2017 we had 14 beehives at the start of the year, producing over 300kg of honey. In 2018, the hive numbers were almost four times that quantity. This year we lost from natural causes over half of our hives, and have only extracted just over 150kg of honey in 6 months. To extract any more would risk further hive loss, which is not acceptable. We all know that without rain, we have no grass for our livestock and no water for our fruit and veges. But many don't think of the effect it has on our bees. Please support local beekeepers, and help these pollinators by planting flowering plants in your garden.
06.01.2022 We currently have multiple large bushfires burning within 10klm of our home. The bees have been trying to recover from last years fires and then the drought. Sprinklers are keeping the hives I have left cool. Hoping these fires are controlled soon. The fire is only two klm from us now. It has gone over the mountain. The smoke is thick.
05.01.2022 Today we had some help at the apiary. Kayla has collected her first beehive and helped Robert and I today with checking hives, extracting and making frames. Now she's well on her way to having her own honey supply. It's always a buzz when you get stung by beekeeping. (Sorry, couldn't resist lol).
04.01.2022 Did you know you can pick up some Baffle Gold Honey from The Junction Cafe in Tannum Sands and also Foodworks Supermarket at Agnes Water. #thejunctiontannumsands #foodworksagneswater Thank you for supporting us and our bees!
