18.01.2022 Did you ever make a lantern and get up at 3.30am to join the Eureka Dawn Walk? In the spirit of the early morning pilgrimage from Old Government Camp to the Eureka Stockade we are releasing a video tomorrow at 5am - to welcome the dawn on 3 December. In this video, Eureka Centre Education Officer Hermione Higgins is joined by Peter Freund to walk the trail of the Eureka Dawn Walk. Peter, who was involved in the development, explains the history of the walk and recites some of the narration given on the trail. The Eureka Dawn Walk was held in Ballarat from 1998 until 2004. Participants would leave the Ballarat Mining Exchange at 3:30am each Eureka Day bearing lanterns and following the trail that the troopers and militia took when they marched on the Eureka Stockade.

09.01.2022 On this day: 11 November 1920 One hundred years ago today, church bells rang, the train whistle blew, and factories sounded their alarms. Tools were laid down and for a second year since the signing of the Armistice - there was silence. In 1918 the Armistice had been a cause for celebration but now it was a solemn reminder of what the War had cost. For two minutes, Ballarat people stopped and paid their respects to those who had died in defence of their country. To those obse...rving the silence, the memory would have been so fresh - brothers, sons, best friends lost. The ceremony was 'so simple, yet so impressive because of its very simplicity'. (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/213375831). Now 100 years later, on Remembrance Day, we continue to observe a period of silence in remembrance of those who died in WWI, and in the many conflicts since then. Lest We Forget. 09.01.2022 5/5 Reclaiming the Eureka Flag A symbol for CHANGE In 2010 filmmaker Warwick Thornton sparked widespread outrage when he expressed his concerns about the Southern Cross ‘becoming the new Swastika’. The heated responses he received led to the creation of ‘We Don’t Need a Map’ - which can be rented or purchased here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/wedontneedamap ... In this journey he explored the Southern Cross as a long-lasting symbol; from an important constellation to First Nations people, through the Eureka rebellion, labour movements, and the recent shift to far-right propaganda. The use of the Southern Cross by so many different groups and causes highlights the continued poignancy the constellation has in Australia. The Eureka Flag is just one example of the Southern Cross design and was used as recognition that all rebels now stood under a southern sky. It is important to share these stories to understand the nuances of meaning and connection. Images: Harry Jagamarra Nelson (left) and Robin Japanangka Granites (right). 06.01.2022 4/5 Reclaiming the Eureka Flag A symbol for MULTICULTURALISM ‘The youngest immigrant is the latest Australian.’ ... Governor Hotham tried to blame the unrest on the goldfields and subsequent rebellion on ‘foreigners’. In doing so, he made the mistake of not recognising the strong connection that arrivals had already made with Australia - that they sought to create a new nation that accepted all of them. Clara Seekamp editor of The Ballarat Times clearly outlined this sentiment: ‘What is this country else but Australia? Is it any more England than it is Ireland or Scotland, France or America, Italy or Germany? Is the population, wealth, intelligence, enterprise and learning wholly and solely English? No, the population is not English, but Australian. The youngest immigrant is the latest Australian.’ #eurekacentreballarat #reclaimtheEurekaFlag #eurekaspirit #eurekastockade #fairgo #australianflags #rainbownation #australiansall #ourflag #strengthindiversity #loveballarat #rebelflag #thepeoplesflag #inclusion #interculturalcities #bekindballarat Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council - BRMC #immigration #multiculturalsociety Multicultural Australia Victorian Multicultural Commission #freepress #newspaper Immigration Museum #australianwomen #cosmopolitanism

06.01.2022 Today we mark the final day of NAIDOC 2020 by revisiting a talk presented by Dr Fred Cahir in July this year for our Talking History program. Dr Cahir's talk is based on research in his book, ' "My Country all gone. The white men have stolen it": The Invasion of Wadawurrung Country 1800-1870'. We are pleased to share Dr Cahir's talk as part of the City of Ballarat's NAIDOC 2020 Virtual Program. Dr Fred Cahir is an Associate Professor in Aboriginal Studies. His Masters and Ph...D focused on Victorian Aboriginal history. His PhD ‘Black Gold: the role of Aboriginal people on the Gold Fields of Victoria’ was awarded the prestigious Australian National University & Australian Historical Association 2008 Alan Martin Award for ‘a PhD Thesis which has made a significant contribution to the field of Australian history.’ ‘Black Gold’ was published in 2012 by Aboriginal History & Australian National University E-Press and subsequently was awarded a Commendation in the 2013 Victorian Community History Awards. My Country all gone is a telling of the invasion of Wadawurrung Country (encompassing the wider Ballarat and Geelong districts of Victoria) in the period 1800-1870. It is a history about international relations between the Wadawurrung and the ngamadjidj (the Wadawurrung word used to describe us which can be translated as ‘white stranger belonging to the sea’). Fred’s book acknowledges the necessity for non-Aboriginal Australians to recognise and confront their own place and role in the history of Aboriginalcolonial invader relations. The Eureka Centre respectfully acknowledges the Wadawurrung People as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the Eureka Centre stands. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge their continuing connections to Country and Culture. @NAIDOC #NAIDOC2020 #wadawurrungcountry #alwayswasalwayswillbe

05.01.2022 A message from Mayor of the City of Ballarat Council, Cr Daniel Moloney honouring the people involved in the events surrounding the Eureka Stockade, including those who lost their lives in the battle.

05.01.2022 Thank you Art Gallery of Ballarat for joining us to #ReclaimtheEurekaFlag by sharing the story of Ash Keating's Eureco flag. Ash's response is yet another reminder of the Eureka Flag's enduring relevance and malleability. At the Eureka Centre Ballarat we welcome people from all over the country who share a deep passion for the Eureka Flag. People from all people all sides of politics as well as those who declare no political affiliation at all. Visitors share with us their v...ery personal and considered reflections on the flag's importance to them and what they believe it represents to our society. We do not tell people how they should feel about the Eureka Flag. We understand that the appropriation of the Eureka Flag has a long history. These competing interpretations create wonderful opportunities to engage diverse audiences in meaningful conversations. Our #ReclaimtheEurekaFlag series of posts principally aims to confront the growing idea that the Eureka Flag is a divisive and inflammatory racist symbol. Everything we know about Eureka tells us this is a very dubious claim. Eureka is one of the Australian nation's most important foundation stories. We want all Australians, in their diversity, to find a connection to Eureka. This is why we seek to refute the sullying of the Eureka Flag as a symbol of racism.

03.01.2022 3/5 Reclaiming the Eureka Flag A symbol for UNITY John Joseph was the first of the Eureka rebels to be tried. It was assumed that jurors would be happy to convict him because he was black. ... He is remembered as a commanding presence at the stockade who ardently defended the cause. Joseph was explicitly trusted; he was made a sentry in the stockade and was one of Peter Lalor’s key advisors. The involvement of Americans at Eureka was significant, and while other arrested Americans received consular support and were freed, Joseph was abandoned by his country and sent to trial. Despite assumptions made by the prosecution, the jury found John Joseph not guilty. His acquittal was widely celebrated and on exiting the courthouse he was carried on a chair through the streets of Melbourne amidst a throng of 10,000 people. He was embraced as a hero.
