24.01.2022 Why Ginger chose to study osteopathy- Attending an academically driven school I were fortunate enough to attend career expo’s, have presentations from career advisers and individually supplied with a broad range of resources to help lead me down the right career path. In year 10 I had to pick subjects that may be considered prerequisite for the university degree I wanted to complete (who at the age of 16 knew what they wanted to be/do for the rest of their lives?, at ...this stage I was still hoping to become an acrobat!). Anyhow I took the advice of close friends and family of picking subjects that interested me; those being science and health related subjects. When I replied with no idea to the careers advisor after they asked me what I wanted to do once I had graduated they suggested osteopathy due to recognising my interests in these specific fields. I nodded my head as though I knew exactly what an osteopath was or did. After some brief research, osteopathy was placed as my first preference, and here I am 3 years into my career and loving it Graduation day See more

Our Postnatal Physio Exercise/Pilates classes assist with physical recovery from childbirth and help your body to keep up with the demands of new motherhood. Classes run for 45 minutes, are led by a physiotherapist and focus on strengthening the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles as well as combatting the postural effects of caring for a newborn using a combination of mat, small equipment and reformer exercises. A one to one postnatal physiotherapy assessment is required before commencing this class to assess the pelvic floor and deep abdominal musculature and any other musculoskeletal issues that may have arisen during or persist post pregnancy. 16.01.2022 HEALTHY AGEING COMMON MYTHS ON EXERCISE Many older people believe that exercise is no longer necessary or appropriate. Some of the common misconceptions that prompt older people to abandon physical activity include:... -Older people are frail and physically weak. -The human body doesn’t need as much physical activity as it ages. -Exercising is dangerous for older people because they may injure themselves. -Only vigorous and sustained exercise is useful. BENEFITS TO THE OLDER BODY Muscle the amount and size of muscle fibres decreases with age. Some studies suggest that the average body loses around 3kg of lean muscle every decade from middle age. There is evidence to suggest that these changes are related to a sedentary lifestyle, rather than age. Muscle mass can increase in the older person after regularly exercising for a relatively short period of time. Bone bone density begins to decline after the age of 40, but this loss accelerates around the age of 50 years. As a result of this bone loss, older people are more prone to bone fractures. Exercise may help to reduce the risk of bone loss and osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise, in particular, helps to keep bones healthy and strong. Heart and lungs Studies show that cardiorespiratory fitness takes longer to achieve in an older person than a young person, but the physical benefits are similar. Regardless of age, people are able to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness through regular exercise. Joints the joints of the body require regular movement to remain supple and healthy. In particular, people with arthritis can benefit from aerobic and strengthening exercise programs. Body fat levels carrying too much body fat has been associated with a range of diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Regular exercise burns kilojoules, increases muscle mass and speeds the metabolism. Canva Info from Physical Activity Australia See more

13.01.2022 Why Holly chose to study osteopathy- I chose Osteopathy as a career after attending the annual careers expo in year 12. My passion had always been health and fitness, but at the age of 18, I wasn’t convinced which health industry to pursue. At the commencement of VCE, I had cautiously decided Occupational Therapy would be the path I’d take. My dad continually tried exposing me to different health professions when finally, at the Ballarat Careers night, the Osteopathy stal...l grabbed my attention. I attended the Victoria University's open day for Osteopathy and was infatuated with the ‘whole picture’ approach to health and wellbeing. I applied for Osteopathy and was absolutely stoked and pleasantly surprised when I had been accepted into the course in January the following year. From the very first day of classes and lectures, I knew the course was exactly what I wanted to do. To this day I feel beyond lucky to be pursuing my career in Osteopathy, and will endeavour to constantly learn more to benefit those around me. Graduation day See more

Make physical activity an enjoyable social occasion. -Safe, easy and comfortable forms of exercise include walking, swimming and cycling. -Weight training can increase your muscle mass programs as short as six to eight weeks can be beneficial. -Start off slowly and aim for small improvements. Keep track of your progress in a training diary for added motivation. -Check your pulse frequently to make sure you aren’t overdoing it. -Choose appropriate clothing and safety gear. -Don’t let yourself dehydrate drink plenty of water. 12.01.2022 Why Megan chose to study osteopathy- I pretty much decided in year 10 that I was going to be an osteopath, much to the surprise of everyone around me who seemed to have no idea what osteo was! I had a recurrent knee injury when I was in year 10 that was affecting my rowing and someone suggested to my mum that osteo might be worth a try. I was really surprised that the osteo barely touched my knee and spent a lot of time examining, testing and treating the joints and muscles above and below my knee. When I looked into osteopathy, I realised that this idea of looking at the body as a whole was one of the fundamental tenants of the profession which I really liked. Here is when I graduated from my Mastersand here’s me dressed as a tennis ball I think we spent most of our uni years attending various dress up parties.
12.01.2022 MEET TAMIKA Tamika has recently joined the EO & OASIS team. Tamika is based at our Buninyong studio, taking clinical and reformer classes and is available for clinical assessments on Monday evenings. I love helping people find a way to enjoy exercise and movement, especially the ones that think they will never like it at all! I wholeheartedly believe that Pilates and Clinical Exercise can benefit everyone wanting to improve their strength, mobility or their general well...being no matter what their age or fitness level. I have always been interested in discovering how the body moves and works which lead me to the pathway of physiotherapy. I completed my Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney in 2017 and have worked across private practise since graduating. After experiencing back and hip issues myself when I was younger, I started doing Pilates for rehabilitation. This led me to begin my Pilates training journey through APPI training in 2015. I have since completed my Certificate IV in Pilates at Breathe Education in 2019. I use Pilates as a core component of my treatment regime for the majority of my patients. I have a particular soft spot for hip and leg injuries. Whether it be sporting injuries, pregnancy-related pain, age related issues or general strength and function of the legs. I find it extremely rewarding watching people getting stronger and trusting their bodies to move in ways they may not have for a long time. Away from work I love spending time hiking, in the Pilates studio or outdoors reading a good book.

If you have a teenager in your family who is starting to think about their next step after school or you know someone that might be interested in this information, please share this post with them/tag them in this post! 12.01.2022 CONCUSSION Did you know that previously concussed children have FOUR times the risk of sustaining a concussion compared with those with no previous concussion history. Although this year has seen a pause on lots of contact sport, concussion in kids is still something we would like all coaches and parents to understand. (Maybe save this post for next season) ... Some basic tips are: Red flags to watch out for if your child has been concussed include: worsening headache, weakness in arms or legs, slurred speech, repeated vomiting, drowsiness and unusual behaviour. Go to hospital if you observe any of these signs. The athlete should not return to sport until their concussion-related symptoms have resolved and the athlete has successfully returned to full school load. Return to sport should always be slow and gradual and supervised by a health professional. Examples of this might include: 1) symptom limited activity 2) light aerobic activity 3) Sport-specific exercise 4) non-contact training drills 5) full contact practice 6) return to play/sport Parents and Coaches can use the CRT (Concussion Recognition Tool), as clinicians we use the SCAT5 : Our favourite footballer Ernie Cheesman References: CRT: https://bit.ly/3e1AHZY AFL Resources: https://bit.ly/2GaT3LO Concussion Research: http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2020-102967

03.01.2022 Why James chose to study osteopathy- "I’ve been really interested in osteopathy since I was about 16 or 17. I used to race BMX at a pretty high level and between my high training loads and numerous crashes, I did frequently have little niggles and pain. My dad took me to an osteopath who was able to help me, as well as helping with all my injuries and pain from there on. I was really interested in the osteopathic approach of looking at the way the body functions and how they ...not only looked at the site of the pain but also the surrounding joints and muscles, and prescribed exercises to give me some responsibility for my recovery. I was already interested in the human body and had a passion for helping people, so studying osteopathy just made sense." Flash back to uni days- loving the skeletal system
