25.01.2022 Tennis players are generally a funny breed- universally they will happily play in scorching heat or in freezing cold temperatures, but give them a windy day and no-one’s happy. The wind can turn what feels like a winning shot off the racquet into a complete blunder, and no one is immune to its power. Such were the conditions for many of the Euroa Lawn teams playing in Round Two of the Benalla and District Tennis Association competition on Saturday. Our Section One team took t...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Glorious conditions greeted tennis players on Saturday for Round 3 of the Benalla and District Tennis Association. In Section One, Euroa did battle with Benalla, and recorded their second win of the season in the process. Michael Nolan was the star of the show, winning his 3 sets convincingly. It was a 3 game win to Longwood, who seem to enjoy the pressure of a close finish and are refining their skills in dealing with tense situations. In Section Two, Longwood Lawn met up wi...th the consistent Euroa Lawn team where an afternoon of strong tennis and laughter was enjoyed by all. Rowena Ellis was at her reliable best, winning both her Ladies sets, and then combining with son Caid for a win in the mixed. Brent Moore made a welcome return to afternoon tennis, having lost none of his passion for the game, and whilst he is available as a ‘fill in’, general consensus was he should free up his Saturdays for the foreseeable future. Moglonemby hosted Terip Terip at home, and had a hard fought 8 game win by the end of play. Stuart Dean played a solid afternoon of tennis, winning two of his three sets, using the angles and surface of the court to great advantage. Gooram travelled to Benalla and came home victorious-always the very best way to come home- winning by 15 games. A 7 set to 2 score-card would usually indicate a fairly one-sided match, but this was apparently not the case with many of the sets much closer than the scores indicated. Bob Furphy was back on the courts, honing his preparation for the Labour Day tournament which is looking more and more possible with each Dan Andrew’s announcement. In Section 3, two Lawn teams faced up to each other, with this turning out to be the match of the day. Longwood Lawn have struggled in recent weeks, but certainly brought their ‘A Game on Saturday, knowing they would need to be at their best against the strong Lawn contingent. Lawn’s men of Jacob Tarran, Craig Durkin and Liam Adcock had the edge over their opponents, but Longwood’s ladies of Lily and Poppy Meehan, and Ally Vecht evened things up with 2 close wins. At the end of the day, it was another win to Euroa Lawn, but with so many young players playing, and playing really well, it was actually a win to the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club with so much promise for the future. Now for the really BIG news of the week. The Euroa Lawn Tennis Club is excited to offer FREE TENNIS on Tuesday evenings. Beginning at 6pm and beginning this week, we welcome anyone who would like a hit on our beautifully maintained courts, with the hopes of beginning a Tuesday night Twilight competition after Christmas. This will be in addition to our already popular Thursday night competition, and will provide both members, and non-members, another chance to play tennis during the week. Further details are available on the club’s Facebook page, with Rod Andrews the contact person. Expressions of interest in the Tuesday night competition can be sent to Rod on 0409384074. See more

16.01.2022 In Division 1 it was going to take a small miracle for Longwood Lawn to make the finals as they were taking on favourites in Benalla at Benalla. With 2 stand ins the Longwood team started well with Megan O'Bree and Judy Sands winning a tight one 8-7 then Dav Mackrell and Declan Weston winning 8-5. Then stand ins Megan and Marnie Burton combined to win 8-3. It was a very tight game with the final set going Benalla's way which tied the games but Benalla won on sets. Great effor...t Longwood.Euroa Lawn could not lose their spot in the finals but played league leaders Avenel White who played Yvonne Maxwell as their number 2 man. Maxie and Peter Bath beat Bob Furphy and Keigan Hicks 8-6 but Bob backed up with a nice win over Peter and Gus Garner with Rod Andrews 8-6. Gen Gordon was having a great afternoon and was the factor in Avenel win by 17 games. In Division 2 Euroa Rangers played Avenel with the Avenel men too strong winning all 3 sets. Row Ellis and Lyn Pierce hung on for an 8-6 and then Row backed it up with a win in the mixed with Barry Fisher. Avenel won easily by 25 games. The other game saw Moglonemby play Swanpool with the MOG men of Jacob Hogg, Stuart Dean and Steve Hicks winning all 3 sets comfortably. Unfortunately the women did not fair so well and Moglonemby did not win another set for the day going down by 18. In Division 3 Euroa Rangers played Euroa Lawn and the team of Jake,Ella and Kelly Hill, Craig and Elisa Durkin and Caid Miller won all 9 sets against a team of stand ins including Erin Durkin and Caroline Keenan who were the best on the day for Euroa Lawn. Longwood had a tight game on their hands against Avenel and the match was pretty even until the mixed when Father and daughter combinations of Scott And Lily Meehan and Brendan and Molly Redfern had solid wins then Marcello Mercuri and Lily Meehan finished it off with an 8-3. Longwood won by 15 games and flew into the finals. Labour Day weekend sees 500 entries flocking into town along with family and friends to compete in what has become the third largest tennis tournament in Victoria (excluding the Aus Open). Feel free to come down to the club and see some great tennis and experience the atmosphere See more

12.01.2022 WINNERS ARE GRINNERS ELTC LDT 2020

11.01.2022 Especially for all our friends outside of Euroa, here are a few snaps to remind you how good the ELTC courts are. They are nearly ready for what’s going to be a ripper long weekend. There have been 490 entries accepted and we meet on Sunday to commence the draw process. Stay tuned for details as to when we will post the draw on our website. With over 150 people pre booking for our Sunday night spit roast it would be a good idea for anyone who has not booked to go back on line and book your spot. Note the new fence between the synthetic courts and the beauty of the grass.

10.01.2022 After a wash out the previous week, Euroa Lawn Tennis Club players were very glad to return to the courts on Saturday in what turned out to be perfect conditions for tennis. In Section 3, Euroa Lawn continued on their winning way with a 22 game win over Avenel. Recruiting a number of big-name replacements for the day, Euroa’s women of Caroline Keenan and Sooz and Olivia Gall had a strong day on the lawn, winning their three ladies’ sets and setting their team up for victory. ...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Tennis returned to the picturesque Euroa Lawn courts on Saturday with the first round of the Benalla and District Tennis Association completed in almost perfect conditions- with occasional gusty winds and a garden bonfire lit midway during play added a certain degree of difficulty for all players. However, whilst the smoke was a constant irritant, the wind did provide an excuse for the wayward shots and missed opportunities that are often a part of the first round of any tenn...is season. Euroa Lawn have entered 7 teams into the competition this year- one Section 1 team, four Section 2 teams and two Section 3 teams. With an aim of challenging our younger, promising players to play afternoon tennis, the teams are a mixture of youth and experience, the old and the new. In Section 2, Lawn teams Moglonemby took on Gooram in what turned out to be a ripping first hit out of the season. Whilst Gooram’s women were slightly ahead after their three ladies’ sets, Moglonemby’s men evened up the ledger to ensure hard fought mixed sets. At the end of the day it was a victory to Gooram by 13 games, with Judy Sands and Michael Kelly setting the bar very high winning all their sets in the first week of competition. Euroa Lawn took on the newly reformed Strathbogie team. Lawn player Kim Saxon acquitted herself very well in her debut game, winning two sets and narrowly losing the third. It appears there are not many games Kim can’t play, and play well- a ringing endorsement for the Euroa Secondary College PE program. Strathbogie went on to win 6 sets to 3, but the only 13 games difference tells a tale of close tussles and missed possibilities. The final game in Section 2 saw Longwood Lawn take on Avenel and miss out on a win by the smallest of margins. One game was all that separated the teams at the conclusion of play, with Bede Redfern winning his three sets and breaking his racquet in the process. Design fault and not temper was the excuse provided, with dubious eye witness (Dav Mackrell) confirming this. The Longwood ladies of Madi Andrews, Bella Vaz and Molly Redfern made the joint step up together from Section 3, and enjoyed the harder hitting immensely. In Section 3, Craig Durkin’s Euroa team had a great day at the office, winning all their sets against a young Tatong team. The Hill family of Jake, Kelly and daughter Ella all went home with equal bragging rights, losing only one game each for the day. No doubt Tatong will be more prepared for the Euroa team next time around. The final Lawn team to play saw Scott Watson providing all the experience and wisdom for his very young team. Coming up against Avenel, the Lawn team managed to win 2 sets and were competitive in others. Watto, Dublin Anderson, Lily Meehan and Harrison Mills all went home with a win under their belts and a smile on their collective faces. See more

09.01.2022 And of course our Open Winners: Mens Julian Cseszko and runner up Kamishk Arunraj. 7-5,6-0 Women’s : Laura Langmead and runner up Kelly Bucewicz, 6-1,7-5

08.01.2022 Due to a number of people playing tennis yesterday, either unaware or disregarding the closure of the tennis club, the synthetics will be locked from tomorrow. This is in line with Shepparton and Clubs all over Australia who have decommissioned all courts.

07.01.2022 Well tennis is a wash out for today, but that won’t stop Robyn Johnson from celebrating her birthday in style. Great company, great surroundings and the sound of rain on the roof-what more could a Birthday Girl ask for?

07.01.2022 Wake up everyone. Time for the mixed doubles day starting at 8.30. Men’s Open semi finals at 9.00am and women’s at 10.00am. Woman’s final at 1pm, men’s at 2pm

07.01.2022 It was a huge afternoon of tennis at home this weekend with 6 Euroa teams playing at home. With only one round to go before finals it was a must situation for Division 1 Longwood Lawn who took on the team above them Avenel Red. Michael Nolan continued his great form combining with Dav Mackrell to win 8-3 against Cain Murray and Dan Mawson then Michael backed it up with 8-1 with Declan Weston. The Longwood ladies led by Allana Birch, Judy Sands and Bianca Armstrong made it a ...clean sweep winning all 3 sets. Longwood continued its domination winning all the mixed. Michael Nolan having an outstanding afternoon being 15 games up in a 31 game victory. This could put Longwood into finals contention. In the other game Euroa Lawn played the fancied Benalla team with the Benalla men giving Euroa a bit of a hiding winning all 3 sets comfortably. Chris Ellis and Gayle Furphy winning the only set for the day and the mother son team of Pip and Will O'Donoghue for Benalla dominating the day. Benalla won easily by 33 games leaving Euroa just holding on for a finals spot. In Division 2 Moglonemby played at 2nd placed Avenel, so was going to have a hard day. Steven Hicks having the best of the day winning with Stuart Dean 8-4 then combining with Lynne Johnston in the mixed winning 8-5. Avenel went on to win by 37. The other match was between Euroa Rangers 5th against leaders Benalla Lawn. The Euroa men started with 2 tie breaker sets just going against them with Barry Fischer in both whilst Rowena Ellis and Lyn Pierce kicked off with a great 8-4 then with Lynne Manson the flying Lyn's won 8-3. Barry and Rowena got Euroa back in the hunt with an 8-2 but at the end it was all tied on games and Benalla won by a set. This should give Rowena's team the incentive they need towards finals. In Division 3 league leaders Longwood played second placed Benalla Gardens with Scott Meehan and Craig Mercuri starting well 8-2 and then Craig and son Marcello winning 8-5. Molly Redfern, Lily Meehan and Emilia Mercuri were battling hard with Lily and Emelia winning a set 8-6. Unfortunately Longwood ran out of steam in the mixed and eventually went down by 14. Euroa Lawn had a chance to consolidate their finals campaign playing 3rd spot just above then in Avenel. John Anderson and Grant Chaston won 8-6 but that was the only set for the day. Avenel were too good winning by 38 games and giving Euroa Lawn something to ponder. Euroa Rangers played their next team on the ladder in Violet Town but only managed 2 sets with Kelly Hill having the best day winning 2 sets with daughter Ella and Caroline Keenan. The day ended with a fantastic trivia night designed and hosted by Brendan Redfern who is now not just our green keeper but our game keeper as well. See more

06.01.2022 The Euroa Lawn Tennis Club had two teams playing in the semi-finals on Saturday, both eager to book their place in next week’s Grand Finals. Our Section One team, Longwood Lawn, headed south and won a thrilling encounter against the highly-fancied Avenel side. Dav Mackrell, Michael Nolan, Keigan Hicks and Scott Watson saved their best tennis of the season to tie on 37 games, but win 4 sets to 2 sets. After an afternoon of fluctuating results, it all came down to the final se...t where quietly spoken duo Michael Nolan and Keigan Hicks both let their racquets do the talking and won a tightly contested tie breaker. Scott Watson upheld his status as a true finals’ player, winning his three sets against quality opposition. According to onlookers, and Watto himself, ‘he served like a beast. This powerful weapon, combined with his canny court sense, simply left Avenel flummoxed. The team now take on the other Avenel side in next week’s Grand Final, with Number One team supporter Ruth Nolan left with just one more match to make it through In Section 3, Euroa Lawn had a comfortable win against Violet Town and moved one step closer to bringing home the silverware. Up and coming talent Ella Hill starred in the mixed when she partnered with her father Jake. Ella’s ground shots were sizzling, the depth and speed of her play difficult for her opposition to counteract. Kelly Hill and Caroline Keenan were also strong contributors to their team’s win, with all three ladies combining well to make a real tussle of the women’s sets. Jacob Tarran, Jake Hill and Craig Durkin have been the form men’s side of the competition, and their efforts on Saturday were just as impressive. After the final point had been played, it was Lawn by 16 games. So, we now look ahead to next Saturday. All Grand Finals will be played at Benalla Gardens, in a setting that is truly conducive to supporting and barracking. In a secluded, garden-like environment, loud yelling and hollering will reverberate nicely. Matches begin at 1:15 pm, with presentations to follow. Good luck to all teams competing, but especially the Euroa Lawn teams. May your shots play true, your serving faultless and your competitive spirit ferocious. Go Lawn! See more

06.01.2022 Saturday was the last home and away round of the season, with the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club experiencing varying degrees of success on the court. In Section 3, Euroa Lawn fronted up to ladder leaders Benalla Gardens. Whilst competitive for much of the day, Euroa suffered one of their rare losses of the season, going down by 12 games, despite winning one more set on the day. Kelly Hill was the stand-out for the Euroa ladies, winning her three sets, while Craig Durkin and Jacob T...arran combined to for the solitary men’s victory in the opening set. In the other Section 3 game, Longwood Lawn hosted Violet Town and unfortunately did not end the season on a triumphant note. It was a long, hard day of tennis, and one the young Longwood team will be glad to put behind them. Lily Meehan and fill-in Bede Redfern fought valiantly for the only win of the day when they won a tie-breaker in the mixed. It was a big win to the Towners and that’s all that needs to be said. In Section 2 Longwood Lawn finished their season with a perfect score, winning all 9 sets easily. The fact that this emphatic win was the result of a forfeit need not be fixated upon- a win is a win. Our Section 2 Gooram side played Terip on home soil, and managed to wrestle a couple of sets from the powerhouse side. Gooram’s ladies were, once again, very competitive winning two of the three sets on offer. The combined talent and experience of Judy Sands, Julie Harrington and Chris Ellis have resulted in numerous wins throughout the season, and have provided the perfect ‘yin’ to the young boys’ ‘yang’ in their side. It is believed that our final Section 2 team, Moglonemby, forfeited this week due to lack of numbers, but apologies if this information is incorrect. My source can be described as ‘sketchy’ at best Our Section One team had the bye, perfect timing to rest up before their final’s campaign begins next week. They, along with our Section 3 team, carry the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club’s hopes and dreams for Premiership glory. Spectators, general onlookers and interested bystanders are encouraged to come along and support our two remaining teams in their efforts to be crowned the best of 2020-21. See more

Despite many competitive games, Longwood only managed to win one set for the day- the combined talents of Dav Mackrell and Declan Weston salvaging some pride for the team.
