20.01.2022 Today, Willow our CEO caught up with John Edwards Privacy Commissioner in Nelson. She wanted to thank John in person for swiftly responding to our request a cou...ple of years for him to film a video for Safeguarding Children Initiative to reassure people that they weren’t breaking The Privacy Act by sharing information to protect children. Our research had found fear of The Privacy Act was a huge barrier to people taking steps to protect children. John’s video is a key component of both our online and face-to-face child protection training, with thousands of people viewing his video and key messages. A great example of working together to make a difference. It was lovely to let John know the impact he has made to the lives of children, those in key roles, and how famous he is!! Rt Foundation

14.01.2022 ZOOMBOMBING: The process by which a troll (or classmate) drops nasty content in front of others in a Zoom call because the host hasn't adjusted file and screen ...sharing settings correctly. More and more kids are loving Zoom or being asked to use it during class activities. But there are some settings that can prevent trolls from stopping in and wrecking things if for some reason they acquire the Zoom link. From a laptop, before making any calls so that the account is set up correctly: - Select "Settings" in the left sidebar menu. - Scroll down. - Toggle off "File Transfer" (it's "on" by default). - Keep scrolling down. - Under Screen Sharing, change it to "Host Only" (it's set to "All participants" by default). If you want to really lock down access, here are 2 pro tips: in Settings, toggle ON "Waiting Room" - this allows a teacher to make sure everyone waiting to get in belongs. Toggle OFF "Virtual Background" - this prevents kids from dropping something inappropriate into their background. We can't find a way to change these settings from the iOS app. If you've started a call from a laptop, Chromebook, follow the screenshot here. TEACHERS - did you know that Zoom is NOT FERPA compliant? You'll want to avoid recording your lessons or taking screen shots. Our PDF explains more. This link includes a PDF for teachers with all of these instructions and a separate PDF for teachers to send to students for their conduct: https://protectyoungeyes.com/zoom-best-practices-teachers-/

08.01.2022 Do you know what your child is doing when they are online? It is so important that we are educated and alert to the potential dangers that exist on the interne...t. Explicit movies and images, predators and scams are targeting young people and the statistics are frightening. Please be aware of what your child is playing. Set up rules about who they communicate with in games. Discuss appropriate and inappropriate words and images and what you can do if you come across them. Encourage your children to be respectful in their interactions with others, even if they are treated unkindly themselves. Set appropriate parental settings where possible. Turn off gps tracking within applications. Most of all have honest and open dialogue with your children about what they may find so that when (not if) they come across something, they are able to deal with it appropriately. #cybersense #makeadifference #onehouraweek #edconnectaustralia
