07.01.2022 OTITIS MEDIA (EAR INFECTION) A HOLISTIC APPROACH Otitis Media (OM), or middle ear infection, is the most common reason that children visit a doctor. It can become a chronic problem for some children, and may even lead to hearing loss. It commonly occurs for the first time following a cold, as the Eustachian tube (the tube between the back of the nose and the ear) gets blocked with fluid and stops air flow. This then provides a nice little environment for bacteria to infec...t the middle ear. Chronic OM, or glue ear occurs when the fluid is unable to effectively drain away, and the sticky fluid can act like an ear plug, thus potentially leading to hearing difficulties. At Evans Head Holistic Health, we have had the pleasure of helping many little ones with their recurrent ear infections and glue ear. Osteopathy can address the structural issues associated with OM, thus encouraging the ear to drain properly and reducing the risk of further infection. Naturopathy is also helpful in identifying any dietary issues that may be involved (food intolerances and allergies are commonly associated), and assist in boosting the immune system to fight off infection and prevent recurrence.
