20.01.2022 ORANGE & STRAWBERRY JELLIES. . . . Gelatin is such a great source of protein and has so many benefits for our health- from supporting gut health, to nourishing joints, to promoting healthy skin. These little jellies are a cinch to prepare and make a delicious summer snack.... . . . 300mL freshly squeezed orange juice 1 punnet of strawberries (blended with enough water to make 300mL liquid) 1 tsp honey 3 T gelatin (I like @nutraorganics ) . . . 1. Warm orange juice in a small saucepan over low to medium heat. 2. Sprinkle over 1.5 T gelatin and stir until dissolved. 3. Continue stirring over medium heat for ten minutes. 4. Pour into moulds or lined tray and refrigerate until set (you can pop in freezer to speed this process up) 5. While the orange layer is setting, prepare the strawberry jelly 7. Blend strawberries with honey and enough water to make 300mL liquid 8. Repeat steps 1-3 with your strawberry liquid. 9. Remove orange jelly from fridge and carefully pour strawberry layer on top. 10. Refrigerate until set. 11. 19.01.2022 CALM. . . . Is it hard for you to achieve? There are many reasons why you might find it hard to relax, slow down, say no. ... . . . For some of you, it might be habit, personality, a fear of missing out. For others it could be more physiological- it could be your biochemistry. . . . If you’ve been under chronic stress for a while (and this doesn’t have to be high level stress, it can be just bubbling away in the background), it’s likely your stress response is elevated. Your body is producing more stress hormones in response to triggers that wouldn’t ordinarily cause you to react. You might feel teary and emotional, irritable, jumpy or tired. . . . It’s also likely that you’re lacking the amino acids required to produce healthy amounts of our calming neurotransmitter, GABA. . . . Although this inability to feel calm is very common, it’s not normal or healthy. . . . Some tips that I share with my clients to help them lower the level of stress hormones racing around their bodies include: - choose low GI carbs like quinoa, brown rice and sweet potato that release their energy into the bloodstream more slowly, reducing the roller coaster of energy and emotions that come with sugar laden foods and drinks - ensure to eat enough protein containing foods, these help us to produce the neurotransmitters required for a healthy stress response - increase magnesium rich foods like leafy greens, whole grains, nuts/seeds and chocolate . . . If none of these tips are helping, an adaptogenic herbal tincture could be helpful. 14.01.2022 PLANT BASED IRON. . . . Did you know that the humble parsley is one of the most iron rich plant foods? But like most plant based sources of iron, it’s much harder for our bodies to absorb than iron from meat.... . . . Other plant sources of iron include leafy greens, legumes and blackstrap molasses. If you’re vegetarian or vegan and plant foods are your only source of iron, because of their lower absorption rate, you’re at a much greater risk of iron deficiency. . . . Tips for enhancing the absorption of plant based sources of iron include: - consuming them with some form of vitamin C like red capsicum, kiwi fruit, strawberries or a citrus dressing - combining plant and animal sources of iron in one meal (eg eggs with leafy greens) - being sure to avoid drinking coffee or tea during or immediately before a meal (these both reduce iron absorption) . . . If you’ve tried all of these little tricks and don’t feel like your iron levels are budging, you may need some further investigations. And if you’re vegan or vegetarian and also pregnant or experience heavy menstrual flow, it’s likely that a good quality iron supplement would be beneficial. 14.01.2022 IRON RICH FOODS . . . They’re not the most popular of foods, but did you know that organ meats like liver are one of the most nutrient dense foods. And they’re especially rich in iron.... . . . One of the tips I pass onto my iron depleted clients who struggle to increase organ meats in their diet is to buy organic chicken livers and store them in the freezer. When preparing a meat dish, grate a couple of tablespoons of the frozen liver into the meal and no one will be any wiser. . . . Sometimes, simple dietary changes like this one, can be enough to boost iron levels. While for some, further investigations may be necessary and a good quality iron supplement might be prescribed. . . . If you think you might be low in iron and adding more iron rich foods into your diet hasn’t helped, I’d love to hear from you.
