22.01.2022 Why is it that people think that learning a skill like pottery should cost very little..??

22.01.2022 An idyllic childhood lived freely and close to nature is undoubtedly the governing force in my life. The experiences which shaped this upbringing where wrought by an aunts consuming passion for art, music and clay. And spending all school holidays with her, she passed this on. It is to the private life of the individual that I address most studio efforts in the hope that the bowls, platters and other serving pieces I make enhance the routines and rituals that frame the intimacy of our lives at home.

18.01.2022 As I struggle to come to terms with the passing of my long time friend and husband, I find my mind looking back at art I created, I didnt like then, now I realise that what I did was deep, thoughtful and interesting. I have been trying to fit into current trends, this has stifled my creative flow. As I now contemplate my life, the need to express through art what I consider [life] is. How do I react to its uncertain future is rather unsettling. Working with clay cannot be rushed or pushed to completion and requires a willingness to engage with the quiet rhythm of the material.

09.01.2022 Some days feel like yesterday never happened. And tomorrow will be better.

04.01.2022 I have just heard Griffith Uni is intending to close down two Queensland College of Art (QCA) studios - Printmaking and Gold and Silversmithing. As artists and ...alumni of QCA, we need to register our objection to this gradual destruction of our 130 plus years Queensland College of Art and the loss of arts education, specialist skills, staff and equipment. Several years ago, Griffith Uni was happy enough to claim (by association with QCA) that it was an 125 years old institution but by slow attrition has been dismantling it ever since. If it didn't want to maintain an Art College, it shouldn't have amalgamated with it twenty years ago. Most institutions in Qld that had studios that actually teach hands on skills have closed down over the last two decades. QUT closed down their dedicated printmaking studio about 17 years ago. However their main purpose was originally a teaching college not an art college. QCA is THE Queensland Art College and probably all that is left to formally teach art in Queensland. This is symptomatic of the devaluing of the arts and culture wars indulged in by politicians (particularly Conservative ones) over recent years. In education the curriculum focus is on STEM not STEAM. 'A' for arts has been completely side lined. You would be hard pressed to find a primary school teacher with adequate arts training in schools despite it being an enjoyable part of learning for the majority of students. Never mind about the funding cuts due to a lack of international students because of Covid, the Govt has been cutting back on arts education for decades because they are such conservative and narrow-visioned philistines. They have compounded and exacerbated the problem as well as highlighted their attitude to the arts with their recent defunding of student places through higher fees for arts degrees and the lack of financial support for arts workers with job keeper during lockdowns and the closures of art industry venues. They apparently fail to grasp that it is an industry worth billions of dollars, which most artists willingly support through their own investment of time and money often despite a lack of personal remuneration. Culture and personal expression is not all about money. If you don't value your culture, you don't value your community. We need to change this attitude and reverse these types of decision. See more

04.01.2022 Claywork is: creating something out of nothing bringing into the world an object that intentionally exists to affect other people, that rare moment when the pot, sculpture or object and idea, works. When something wonderful has happened. When tension and movement, the gestural qualities, emerge.

03.01.2022 One day I may understand how FB works completely.

02.01.2022 Soon I will have some photos of all the work created in the studio by our talented Kids and adults over the last few days. It is such fun to be able to share what I had the privilege to learn many years ago at QLD TAFE. We where so lucky to have that Facility at Southbank. We had an inspiring team of tutors. And made live long friendships.
