25.01.2022 This is a great new development! Looking forward to seeing more sports organisations embrace sustainability for their events.
22.01.2022 This is a good move and well overdue. This was never a good idea and it allowed many people to kid themselves that they were doing something responsible by buying this brand when they shouldnt have even been buying this entire category of product. Its good to hear that the company has been able to successfully pivot to other products in order to achieve some beneficial outcomes.
20.01.2022 CO2 levels in the atmosphere Weekly averages 5 September 2020: 411.59 ppm This time last year: 408.82 ppm... 10 years ago: 387.59 ppm Pre-industrial base: 280 Safe level: 350 Atmospheric CO2 reading from Mauna Loa, Hawaii (part per million). Source: NOAA-ESRL Scientists have warned for more than a decade that concentrations of more than 450ppm risk triggering extreme weather events and temperature rises as high as 2C, beyond which the effects of global heating are likely to become catastrophic and irreversible. 19.01.2022 Make the most of your down time. Become an Accredited Event Sustainability Practitioner with Sustainable Event Alliance!
19.01.2022 This was pre-covid (ie the old normal) but its still great advice.
19.01.2022 This interesting piece on compostable plastics has some useful videos embedded into that can help put the issues into a real world context. The testing service is quite a nice idea.
19.01.2022 This is a problem that needs to be addressed across the globe and we need to role out the best solutions we can find.
18.01.2022 More on the current discussion around the climate impacts of personal and business flights.
18.01.2022 The pace on event sustainability is really picking up globally.
18.01.2022 This has got to be a good thing!
18.01.2022 Interested in how we can reframe the event sector for the better? Sign up!
17.01.2022 Its inspiring what big awards and other events can do when they try. The process needs to be codified in policy so everyone involved understands that theres no getting around it and the planning and preparation needs to start much earlier to get the best results. Event sustainability initiatives *CANT* be left as late inclusions and bolted onto the end. That simply does not work.
16.01.2022 What a great article! Links the rebuilding of a sustainable tourism industry with other important sustainability elements that are interconnected and that will need attention in order to achieve the results we need!
16.01.2022 As we approach the end of the year and the start of a new year its a great time to think about whether you are making environmental claims that cant be substantiated. 2020 could be the year where you clean house and ensure that you arent involved in greenwashing and that you are not doing business with any companies in your supply chain that could be dragging your credibility down.
16.01.2022 Just about to deliver some event sustainability training for Meetings and Events Australia on behalf of Sustainable Event Alliance
16.01.2022 Id like to give these a try! That being said I think that in almost every instance we can simply do without straws. People act like they are a necessity however they are a relatively new arrival on the scene and people in years gone by never had or used them and they got by drinking their drinks just fine.
15.01.2022 This is a cool idea that I can admit hadnt even occurred to me! Not the same but drive-ins were fun when I was a kid. Certainly solves the parking problem
15.01.2022 We cant see this current covid period as the new normal. The new normal is still to be designed, implemented and refined. Please engage as we need your voice.
15.01.2022 This is great news. Probably a bit in the realm of too little, too late, but it will certainly help to get things moving again. Lets hope that this new beginning can usher in a new normal for increased sustainability considerations in events and screen productions. Well give it a red hot go!
13.01.2022 Always a good idea to look more deeply than just the marketing claims and buzzwords of products purporting to be eco-friendly. Our intent as concerned consumers is good and right but always try to find the best products in a category that you want to use and make sure that they are compliant with what you are hoping to achieve. Then stick with them. If you need help theres places like Sydney Sustainability Centre where you can get some informed guidance and reliable recommendations.
12.01.2022 If single use plastics and packaging are an issue that bugs you, and it should, then its important to keep an eye on this while we are in a state of health driven flux around service ware and packaging. The Responsible Cafe network has been doing good work in this area to encourage the restart of contact-less use of reusable cups at cafes and Ive seen it being picked up and promoted in restaurant and cafe guides lately as a good reason to select participating cafes inste...ad of those that have abandoned the reusable/bring-your-own cup push. The Sustainable Event Alliance (SEA), which I am heavily involved with, has convened an international taskforce to work on this issue as it is relevant across the globe. It had its first two meetings last week and will continue to consult and work on guidelines and strategies. Im on the team so if youd like to hear more please get in touch.
11.01.2022 This is great news indeed. The retailers complaining about not having enough time to prepare need to suck it up and just get on with it. The speed of change demonstrated with COVID shows that change can and must happen much faster than the laggards trying to avoid getting with the program have expressed as being possible in the past. Given that it's mid-September now, "early 2021" isn't that far away and I say it can't come quick enough when it comes to important changes like getting rid of single-use plastic cutlery and straws.
11.01.2022 Want to find out more? Come along to the EcoVillage that Sydney Sustainability Centre is hosting at Newtown Festival on Sunday 10th November and you can attend a fascinating presentation for free. And have a ball ,,,
10.01.2022 We simply have to get on top of this stuff. Its the new normal, not the old normal.
10.01.2022 This is a cool thing that I dont remember having heard of before - and theyve just planted their 100-millionth tree! Amazing! Im going to give it a try - maybe you could too?
10.01.2022 So thats not very good! Sounds like these events have got some environmental cleaning up to do!
09.01.2022 Flight shame is only going to increase when it comes to choosing venues or events.
07.01.2022 Go Young Henrys! These guys are Inner West business champions showing great leadership and doing great things to help address their carbon and ecological footprints. Also nice work by the UTS Climate Change Cluster - cant forget the scientists!
07.01.2022 Today (5th June - Earth Day!) we are releasing an industry wide survey to gather information on reuse, their supporting systems at events and adherence to exist...ing hygiene standards. This will help shape the required global hygiene standards across our industry and the shared goal to not go backwards as events start back up again when we have come so far with reusables to date. Appreciate your help in spreading this far and wide across your networks please and thanks again for all your support so far. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/reusableshygiene3
06.01.2022 I am very happy to be announcing our partnership and opening of the Sustainable Event Awards in association with Event Industry News and other industry friends.... Announced in February, the launch was obviously delayed due to the global Covid-19 crisis, but the decision has now been taken to launch the awards to celebrate achievements so far for our sector and to make positive steps for the future. https://thrive.sustainable-event-alliance.org/awards/
05.01.2022 Wow - what a great initiative! This is the type of regenerative approach that goes even further than sustainable and will hopefully continue to gain popularity. It doesnt have to be limited to the entertainment / events sector it needs to achieve broader appeal to other ethical businesses in every industry sector.
05.01.2022 If the shift from Cleaning for Appearance to Cleaning for Health is genuine then this is also a great time to build green cleaning products and processes in. Hotels, venues, businesses - why not get just as good if not better results and NOT have to swap one set of products and procedures that havent been prioritising human and environmental health for another that are only focused on narrow health parameters? Obviously covid is the priority right now, and will be into the future, but we need to get away from chemicals that can and do make us and cleaning workers sick and that have harmful impacts on the environment and processes that use too much energy and too much water. That should be the new normal, not just a more narrowly more effective version of the old normal. We can have it all!
05.01.2022 This is a fabulous success story example of an initiative linking up arts and music fans with on the ground environmental action. Ive done this quite a bit in the past and so if you think that youd like to do something like this once COVID restrictions lift a bit please get in touch and we can keep you updated. Our sites will definitely be much, much closer though and will be realistic to attend for a weekend near to Sydney.
04.01.2022 "Not Without a Sustainability Strategy" - yep! I can never understand why organisations so often try to avoid policies and strategies and try to go straight to actions. Doing that is like rowing a boat facing backwards and just assuming that you are going to the right place.
04.01.2022 A great initiative to help reduce our impacts from our shared events.
01.01.2022 Hey its National Recycling Week next week! Here are some top tips to help you to make sure youre getting it right next week and on into the future!
01.01.2022 Heres a good news story! Of course it would be better if everyone was using re-usables but at least these cups will be kept out of landfill - thats certainly a worthy start.
