25.01.2022 Why are People-Centric Leadership and Engagement so important for Events? This is the first of a 5-videos series I will be posting over the next month on People Centric Leadership and how to create an effective temporary workforce. This first video talks about the opportunities of People Centric Leadership and Engagement, showing why this is essential for leaders to think about, specially within the event industry.

25.01.2022 What is the ROI of your volunteer program? And why would you want to measure it? Most organisations report the number of volunteers at the end of the year. In fact, most funding is based on this metric. Yet this number does not provide you with any real insight into the impacts your organisation made as a result of involving volunteers. For example,... - How much money did you raise? - How many people did you serve? - How did your organisation or people benefit? For NFPs these are typically linked to volunteer involvement, but often not measured as such. Besides justifying an investment into the volunteer program, sharing the impact with volunteers also creates a higher engagement. So, if you capture: - Feedback from your audience and the difference volunteers made for them - Amount of money raised through volunteer activities - Number of people served by your organisation because of volunteer involvement - Volunteer tasks that impacted the organisation or people If you dont have that data available now, this is the time to plan to make sure you have it prior to the end of the financial year or end of next year, so that you can clearly communicate the impact of your volunteer program to ensure your ROI. How do you measure the impact of your volunteer program?

24.01.2022 Lets kick those social distancing blues in the butt with a kick ass virtual session for Volunteer Managers! Most of us have to adjust to new ways of working at the same time as maintaining connections with volunteers. Managing change is never easy, especially when we ourselves are adjusting too, but there are so many opportunities in creating new ways to operate too. I love discussing new ideas and solutions that we can create at this time. Focussing on the positives is key..., and maintaining the connections with our peers is equally important. I created the Volunteer Managers Creativity & Connection Session for that exact purpose. Id like to create an uplifting and empowering space to be creative, strategic as well as supported. While we will share our challenges, please be mindful to keep the space positive to allow creation and support for each other. If you are up for it, join me at the link below next Tuesday. And if you know anyone else who may be interested, please feel free to share the details with them. Session Details: Volunteer Managers Creativity & Connection Session (on Zoom) Tuesday 21 April @ 11am Register: https://zoom.us//regi/tJ0pfu-hqDstG9MmbwnZUns2rt6n2UKMC94H

23.01.2022 [Part 1 of 4] This time is an incredible challenge for leaders on all levels, but its also an incredible opportunity to reflect on what it really means to be a leader and what YOUR people your teams, your customers, basically your stakeholders - really need right now. While we cant change the situation, what we always can do is to build connections and support people. ... Your decisions as a leader impact a lot of people, from staff, to contractors, to suppliers. They need a lighthouse to guide them and connect them. Uncertainty is very uncomfortable, so it is even more important now to communicate powerfully. It doesnt mean you need to provide solutions for everyone, but acknowledging the impact; showing people that we understand; and offering support goes a very long way in all of us creating stronger communities around our organisations. In talking to different leaders and thinking about what powerful communication actually looks like I came up with these 3 ways. 1. Share transparently 2. Consider, listen and seek input 3. Offer support In the coming days, I will share in more detail how you can apply these and be the lighthouse that leads the way and stays well connected to your stakeholders throughout these coming weeks. Did you adapt your communication? What worked for you? Do you want help? Lets chat.

22.01.2022 Our next Volunteer Managers Connect & Create session is on today at 4pm AEST (Sydney time). Join us in talking about where we are putting our focus, how we can set powerful intentions and ultimately increase volunteer engagement. Cant wait to catch up @ 4pm... 22.01.2022 Do you know the difference between Systemic Centric and People Centric leadership? Today lets take a step back and look at the fundamental differences between these approaches to leadership and why both are important to ensure teams are both efficient and effective. Do you recognise your leadership approach in either, or maybe both of them?

22.01.2022 Team turnover is costly. Leaders often turn to incentives as a solution. But using incentives alone does not create greater engagement. If there is no team engagement, incentives dont keep great team members.

17.01.2022 Thanksgiving connects us to gratitude - a great time to reflect on how we practice gratitude in the workplace all year round as it has immense benefits to leaders and organisational outcomes. Difference in gratitude levels are responsible for about 20% of individual differences in overall life satisfaction. Yet, only about 15% of people regularly say thank you at work, and about 35% of people say that their managers have never thanked them. On the other hand, 80% of employee...s say they would be willing to work harder for an appreciative boss. Hence, this gratitude gap in workplaces impacts productivity and therefore the bottom line. Focus points to practice gratitude: - Focus on people not performance - Personalise your thanks-giving - Be specific in your gratitude - Dont fake it I especially love the last of the 4 focus points to practice gratitude - Faked gratitude can be felt by people and carries no benefits, it may even be worse than expressing none at all. What I find makes a difference is connecting the thank you to the impact. Sharing the outcomes achieved and the difference it made, allows both leaders and the team to connect to the bigger picture. This elevates gratitude levels and connection in organisations. Gratitude is an important part of workforce and volunteer engagement. Lets practice more gratitude all year round.

16.01.2022 The best leaders are vulnerable. When things dont go to plan with recruiting and managing volunteers, one of the most common things I see managers do is try to profile their volunteers and study their motivations in the attempt to find more of the same people. Its great to understand your volunteers better, however every person has different intrinsic motivations. The focus really needs to be on the leadership and what the leader can do to create higher engagement, but tha...t requires being vulnerable. Leaders who look at themselves and are open to adapt their approach will be able to solve their recruitment and retention problems.

16.01.2022 [Part 3 of 4] The second of my top three elements of powerful communication is consider, listen and seek input. You dont have to do it all alone, leaders just like everyone else need support. One way to get this is seeking input from our stakeholders.... Plus, this helps them too. Encouraging staff to provide input takes them out of the current situation and refocusses them. You also tap into new ideas and possibilities to explore. And what about other stakeholders? What if you asked your audience? Your suppliers? Your members? Its vulnerable, but this is what it takes to create community engagement. Think about how your organisation can keep connecting with all your communities. If we stay open, we may even find better solutions altogether that we werent able to think of before. Best of all it keeps people connected and involved which really is key at this time. One great example I have seen considering and keeping their communities engaged, is the Cancer Council NSWs Biggest Morning Tea. The team at Cancer Council were really quick to change their communication and adapt to a virtual version, which keeps people engaged with the organisation but also offers some diversion to people - a win on all levels. How are you involving your stakeholders or stay connected to them? Do you want help? Lets chat.

15.01.2022 It's time for our next Connect & Create session on Tuesday 12 May at 9am and 4pm AEST (Sydney time). This week we will keep exploring intention setting and how this can help us create deeper volunteer and community engagement and therefore support recruitment and retention. The discussions we had over the past sessions were outstanding in highlighting the power of a positive mindset and intention setting to create effective volunteer programs, that positively impact organisat...ions, no matter how challenging times are. I am so grateful to keep leading these sessions, bringing together so many powerful volunteer leaders and creating change together. 15.01.2022 Are you struggling to find volunteers or keep them on board? Here are 3 things to consider Lack of visibility: This affects everything - ticket sales, attendance, ability to attract sponsors, suppliers, staff and volunteers. You dont need to be visible to everyone, but you need to be visible to your audience, keeping in mind that your staff and volunteers are part of that audience, not a different demographic group. ... Ask yourself: Who is my audience and am I visible to them? Lack of communication: Your audience can be interested to get involved in different ways, so dont limit your messaging and talk from the heart, it will draw people in. Ask yourself: Do I offer my audience volunteering as a way to take part? Am I communicating with my volunteers regularly to keep them updated and excited? Un-defined roles: Without clear roles you may get a lot of registrations but lose them quickly. Clarity on roles will set expectations. At the same time aligning roles to outcomes creates engagement. So, the people who register to volunteer know the what and why and are much more likely to stay. Ask yourself: Do I have a clear role description aligned to outcomes?

13.01.2022 Lunch with Leaders - with Craig Bradbrook, CEO of Playgroup SA A really great conversation about how to achieve a greater impact! We talk about result based accountability, impact measurement and tools to evaluate not only what you do but how well you do it. We also speak about team engagement and how to create greater accountability and the impact that has on innovation and outcomes.

13.01.2022 There are three questions that need to be answered to create your vision: What is the main purpose of your event? What type of person is this event for? What is their incentive for attending this event?... Usually, top managers are able to answer to these questions within our first meeting. Yet, more often than not, their teams arent aware of the organisations vision enough to respond to these three simple questions. This is the first symptom of a vision that isnt lived within an organisation. A lived vision will ensure everyone is intentionally doing their part to drive the organisation towards the shared vision. Its just like in a sports team - Imagine if everyone had a different idea of success - how would that play out for the team and the club? Are your teams aware of your vision? What are the measures you take to ensure everyone within the event knows, understand and lives your vision? Photo by Quino Al on Unsplash

12.01.2022 Change the lens through which you see your event volunteers. Volunteer show up rates in the event industry are at 60-70% on average, which is typically met by simply recruiting more people to offset this number. However, this wastes time and money in recruitment and it doesnt address the problem. ... If attracting people to work on your event is a struggle, check in on what you can change in order to get a different result. Here are three easy steps to reflect on: 1. How are your volunteers assisting you to achieve your vision? What would happen if they werent there? 2. What is your message? In other words, how are you communicating your vision? 3. Are you consistent? Your messaging to attract volunteers should be the same as for attracting any other stakeholder - communicating your vision. This will not only save you time and money, but it will attract the right people to your event.

11.01.2022 Is your organisation attractive to young people? People these days, especially Gen Y and Z are looking for purpose, not only within their roles but also in the organisations they work for. The times where it was enough to just advertise a job title and have people jump at it are long over. Organisations need to show why they are desirable to the people they want to attract. Your organisation presents an image into the market one way or the other, so the question is are you a...ttracting the people you want to attract and are they staying? If the answer is no, consider looking inward. What is your purpose and how do you communicate it to the market? Secondly how does the role link to the purpose? Powerfully communicating your purpose may repel some people, but it will definitely attract those that align with it, and isnt that what we ultimately want?

10.01.2022 Yes, we did it! We had a kick ass virtual volunteer managers get together on Tuesday! What was clear is that keeping volunteers engaged and connected to the organisation is key to ensure we can continue serving clients effectively now and going forward. What the session also highlighted was that we have a great community with so much potential to support one another.... There is always something to learn and that, perhaps, is the biggest learning in all of this. Given the key learnings from this session, we will adjust the upcoming session: 1. Focus on Connection - I would like to create deeper connections and more discussion time for everyone within our sessions by including breakout sessions. I think this will also serve as a great example for creating connections for and with volunteers. 2. Focus on a Topic - To keep the conversations focussed each time Id like to include a weekly topic. This will allow us to really explore a topic each time and create outcomes for us. With this in mind, at our upcoming Creativity & Connection session, we will build on the discussion we had and take a deep dive into Engagement Strategies. And we will include some fun elements to help our creativity Cant wait to connect again! Details of our next Session: Volunteer Managers Creativity & Connection Session Topic: Deep diving into volunteer engagement - how can we deepen the connection with our volunteers Tuesday 28 April @ 4pm (AEST) Register: https://zoom.us//regi/tJcud--gqzsvHNRUguUU459Zc0eAyXAaan7F

10.01.2022 Do you constantly need to recruit more volunteers? Or do you find it challenging to retain your volunteers? Often leaders consider this a recruitment problem, but it actually is an engagement problem. 80% of the recruitment ads I see for volunteers read something like this: Calling all volunteers OR Volunteer with us and get experience in OR We need you!... With Calling all volunteers you reach at best a fraction of your potential target market. Plus, the market that you actually want to attract, the people passionate about your cause, your vision, your organisation may not respond to that. Why? Because people dont typically see themselves as volunteers. Instead they see themselves as people who are passionate about certain things. So, tap into that passion and connect on the level that you have something in common. Its so much more powerful and the only way to really engage people which means you attract more of the right people who will stay longer with your organisation.

10.01.2022 This month Eventeamwork turned 8 and and I decided to share some reflective thoughts in this article. There is a downside to efficiency that can work against organisations when leading people and striving for creating bigger and better events and greater impacts. On the upside we can tap into a huge potential by changing the approach to leadership.... (Photo by Maxime Bhm on Unsplash)

09.01.2022 Are you goal setting or intention setting? I have often approached goal setting and intention setting in the same way. But I realised that while they are similar, approaching each with more clarity can help with team and community engagement. Goal setting is a key part of project planning - you need to know your destination, to create a plan to get there. A goal is typically number driven - tangible so we know when we reached it.... Intention setting takes goal setting a bit further. What does it look and feel like when we reach our goal? Goals seem to be more analytical while intentions tend to focus more on emotions and therefore open us up to a wider range of potential actions. Imagine... setting a goal, such as "We want to have 100 volunteers by the end of the year". What actions would that inspire you to take? versus... setting the intention to have "100 engaged volunteers by the end of the year, who love working with us and feel safe and satisfied" What actions would that inspire you to take? Intention setting provides more depth and an emotional component to our actions. As people respond to emotions, the messaging you create from intention setting will be a lot more powerful in engaging your teams and other communities.

05.01.2022 One of the most common tools managers use to get their teams to perform is applying pressure and micromanaging as it provides a sense of control. But you cant control people, or at least not effectively in the long run. If you dont want to micromanage, but you feel like you have to, thats because you set it up that way. ... In this video I talk through how to increase productivity of your teams consistently.

04.01.2022 From Planning to Staging, we have identified the 5 most common mistakes leaders make when managing their teams. How you manage your teams impacts their productivity and therefore the outcomes your organisation can achieve. With a multitude of tasks and tight deadlines, it is easy to fall into the trap of making these common mistakes, but understanding the cause is half the solution.... How aware are you of how you manage your teams?

04.01.2022 [Part 2 of 4] The first of my top three elements of powerful communication at any time (but especially now) is sharing transparently. This is not the time to hold back information. People are anxious, and they are looking for guidance and some form of certainty, they are looking at you as a leader to be reliable. ... Sharing transparently is thinking about your community and how the current situation may affect them. What are their concerns and fears and how can you address these? Sharing openly and consistently requires vulnerability, and that will connect people to you, because we are all human. Building and maintaining this connection is imperative. One great example I have seen of a leader sharing openly is David Walsh from Dark Mofo (DarkLab), sharing his thoughts on his event and company. Its honest, its human and its real. [See link to his post in the first comment] How open are you in your current communication? Do you want help? Lets chat.

04.01.2022 Leadership is all about empowering people. And empowering people means we actually are being humans dealing with humans. No system can replace that. #empowered #workforceimpacts

03.01.2022 What is team engagement? More and more leaders get frustrated about team engagement not working. They believe they do all they can but dont see any benefits. Often this is because the focus is on activities alone, like incentives or team building. ... These are of course great things to embrace, but they dont mean much when people are not engaged, and that incongruence can be felt by the team. Engagement is not a quick fix, its not a one-time application that will suddenly produce a different result. Engagement is a long game and it is linked to your vision and values and how they are shared and lived in your organisation. It shows in the actions people take. And it all results from the actions leaders take. Clear indicators for the level of engagement are your retention rate, your productivity and your audience satisfaction. Thank you Masami Sato for creating this community and for capturing the essence of the B1G1x conference last week. Lets do this together! #b1g1x #businessforgood

01.01.2022 Here is what we observed when applying a People Centric Approach. In this video we take a more practical approach and show what we at Eventeamwork have been able to achieve through People Centric Leadership over the past years working with large scale events in Australia.

01.01.2022 [Part 4 of 4] The third of my top three elements of powerful communication is offering support. Real engagement comes from the heart. Consider that your teams and other stakeholders need support, e.g. due to cancellation of work, working from home or event cancellations. ... Change is never easy and if you can be here to support your stakeholders through that, it will go a long way. Everyone in your community is looking for support and guidance. This is an amazing opportunity to really connect. Support can come in many forms - and any support you offer others will flow back to you. I love seeing what the current situation brings out and how organisations consider the needs of their communities and offer real support. Offering their communities a platform for conversations also keeps people connected and engaged. How are you supporting your communities?
