22.01.2022 The value of research to practicing teachers is a constant debate. Many teachers believe that research is separate to what we do in class. It is unfortunate that belief is so prevalent, as research in the classroom is, in my opinion, the most effective way to maintain or improve best practice. Without accurate information on what is really happening in classrooms, how can we improve the results of our students?
14.01.2022 Knowing a word’s origin can make spelling it easier. For example, knowing the ‘eau’ sound in French can make spelling a word like beau easier. Even if the word doesn’t become any easier to spell, at least there's a reason it doesn’t follow the standard rules of English, or have a phonetic base. Yacht, sauna and abattoir are examples of words that are used in English but originated elsewhere. The question is... where?

11.01.2022 Try to avoid the expression try and. While it's fine to say this in informal situations, the grammatically correct expression is try to. And is a conjunction and connects two similar ideas, so if you say try and, it implies you can't fail. While you may be successful, there is a chance you may not. So if you say try to, and don’t manage to get the job done, it's okay because you didn’t make any guarantees!
08.01.2022 When people bemoan falling standards in education, I wonder what benchmark they are using to decide this? If language is an ever changing entity, do standards fall, or does the way we use language simply shift?
