It’s over 2 years ago since our client Vanessa contacted me to talk tiny after seeing my work , aesthetic and values in one of the tiny house documentaries my partner and I feature in. ... A year later she was ready and we began talking design. . . . It’s a pretty special feeling , working closely with someone , designing a home together and trying to visualise there vision and dream. Then turn it into a real thing! A very special experience. It helps having a great/ rad client with cool ideas!! @van_esther . . This build project has be a collaboration between myself and shamus from @sorconstruction (Amongst all the rest of our team) He is a great friend and colleague. His depth of skill and knowledge have really made this project flow seamlessly and are forever inspiring. The styles and rails are old floor joists from a house down the road. The solid panels are made from 40 year old hardwood I picked up from a friends dads back yard . This has been a epic experience, researching, asking for advice from people I respect. Talking to other craftsmen about details and design. Making it work with a basic joinery workshop (tablesaw , thicknesser, router etc NO 3 phase gear) Hand Chiseled all the tapered mortises for the through tenons and with wedges. (I used a drill press to first drill through) . . . I wanted to push myself, create something that will make people and myself smile every time they see it and knock that knocker . Create art to inspire us on a daily bases to live fully and appreciate life. . . Massive thanks to my partner in crime Sian @lifeasmedicine for the never ending support and encouragement. . . . 24.01.2022 The pine framing is going up quickly .This will house the in- fill strawbales on the exterior walls of the building. Big thanks to shamus, Chris and Ry for there hardwork the last 2 days. Shamus started his construction business 10 years ago and now specialises in sustainable design and building with natural materials and Strawbale. He is a extremely talented, passionate builder and friend who I have been working with over the last year or so building strawbale houses in VIC.... 21.01.2022 Wow! A lot had happened since my last post....... . . .... We did it, we completed the 3 1/2 week internship that we planned. What an amazing achievement from everyone involved. The house has transformed from a frame and roof to a building with walls and texture. All the strawbale walls are installed with 2 coats of external lime and two coats of internal earth render. All the COB walls are installed and nearly all of them with two coats of earth plaster. . . . Incredible friendships have been made and memories that will enrich us all forever. . . . Huge thanks to my partner Sian for her support, beautiful cooking , looking after us all with her love and caring nature, Im forever grateful. . . . So many more thankyous to come.... . . . . Sometimes you need to change it slightly depending on the join and timber . 17.01.2022 This is the frame we just finished near Bega NSW. It was an amazing journey of block 'n' tackle, chisels, rain, chainsaws, laughs and bloody hard work! congrats to Anthony Moore for getting the big, heavy thing up ;) Amazing work by all, Traditional timber frames crew Chris and Andrew were inspiring to work with and also just a bloody good laugh, big up to BIG Dee and the Moore family for the whole experience. We will be hopefully running a Strawbale workshop there at the start of next year so keep your ears and eyes peeled, gonna be an epic adventure! PEACE

Just scribed in the bent queen posts at the end of today. Gonna drop them in tomorrow. Gonna be epic when this thing stands up. Most of this timber was mill by us from salvage just up the road. 16.01.2022 So, I've been on holiday and haven't posted for a while,I've been back with my family in malvern, England. It's been a journey of friends, family , good times, reflection and evolution. I was lucky enough to be asked to design and build a round timber framed out house for my family in my home town. It's been an amazing process, meeting new friends, working with old friends, having help raising it with some amazing human beings that I love and respect . I've pushed myself , blood sweat and tears. When I look at the finished product I think about all my teachers and mentors, all the trees in the forest and there life giving energy, all the journeys I've been to get to this moment. 15.01.2022 It’s been a massive 2 weeks.... . . As a 4 strong team we have successfully done a lime rendered final exterior coat with a sponged finish and soapstone natural pigment. .... . Also we have finished all the site mixed clay/sand plus casein glue , trowel finished internal top coats.... We have used two different pigments to give contrast..... tricky to get the join spot on but we achieved a crisp edge :) . . I had a prep week before the guys arrived vigorously testing different ratios, additives , pigment quantities and application techniques.... with natural, on-site mixed product you need to test test and tests again.... Time consuming and sometimes frustrating.... We got there!!! . . Biggest thanks to my good friends Eli, Sean and Kwan for the true commitment, support and contribution. . . . Eli has been my rendering partner the past few weeks... together we applied , compressed and shaped over 200m2 of earth and lime render over the last 2 weeks with the support of mix master Kwan and hawk loader/ wall prep / scaff builder Sean.... It’s been a pleasure to work alongside Eli as a artisan , a man of focus and Attention to detail... absolute legend coming back to site with me at 8pm to compress earth walls on numerous occasions.... . . I think Eli @bekeeli and I will enjoy a few days resting our arms that are about to drop off!!!!! Epic effort!!! Loved the addition of the waney edge fascia at last minute. It was left over cladding from the shed. Looks great to get that organic line. Just need to finish the balustrade and steps now. 13.01.2022 10 years ago today, me and me mates went to abbey rd studios in London to mix, master and press a vinyl of our single John Esli Davies. I wrote this song about my granddad when he past away. . . .... A lot has change since then, a whole decade ago..... I have so many amazing memories of those times in my life. On the road , on tour , in the studio , up in the night writing songs, getting messy and playing Rock and roll!! We were a family and that family grew over time. 13.01.2022 Happy new year to everyone! We have been flat out since the internship in November. Our home is really taking shape. Extremely close to lock up now. ... - windows installed Beautiful frames made by #pickeringjoinery I sourced 90% of the double glazed units secondhand. Un-used extras from high rises in Melbourne CBD. I designed the windows and traditional timber frame around the glass I could get.... a lot more work and forethought but humbling to use a waste product at a very low price. The north glazing is going in next week. The porch: The sliver top ash ship lap cladding looks beautiful. I got this off FB market place. It was over ordered for a job in Torquay. 1/3 of the price per LM..... Ive got heaps more too, gonna do some internal cladding. Really nice grain and gum character. Ive just installed some creative stick framing around the TTF on the porch as nothing is straight and the braces are set to the face. All the studs are scribed. The will be blue board installed and lime rendered. - Ive just begun building an traditional arch top door made from reclaimed tassie oak from a old deck that was pulled down locally. This will take its place central to complete this epic entry porch. Ill update pictures of the door as Im building it. All the cypress waney edge sills have been custom cut, installed and oiled with an all natural livos oil. These slabs were felled and milled locally 12-15 years ago from the Birregurra golf course by some friends and mentors of mine. They have been air drying all this time in my mates back yard. Feels extremely rewarding for me to use local and sustainable materials consistently...... there is a story everywhere you look! It has been a huge energetic input on my behalf sourcing and using local, recycled and sustainable materials. Its not easy , you cant really put a price on it but its a personal commitment to an ethical, regenerative future that warms our souls and builds our characters. Sometimes its a big gap between updates and photos online . 12.01.2022 Had the most amazing two weeks in Brecon , Wales with this crew. The hewnwood team are like family to me and this area sings to my soul and my Welsh heritage. Working beside craftsmen that inspire. It Was a real privilege to be part of teaching the course on the first week, showing and explaining techniques to someone really helps you concrete reasons and ways of doing things.... why do I do it that way??.... The second week blew my mind, constructing the cruck frame / cr...oss frame. Beautiful timber and a magnitude of joint complexity. Raddest porch ever..... On top of everything, Marys food was off the hook!! That women is magical and held everything together. Thanks eternally to Alan Richie, Conner , syd and Mary for there hospitality once again. Really feels like a second home too me. Now we are back in the workshop working on a 27m traditional timber frame barn. 12.01.2022 So I havnt posted over this last month. Its been very challenging for many reasons. Ry and myself have been working so hard on this frame. The shear size and weight of these cypress logs has been difficult. Moving them around , flicking ink lines over the long undulations, scribing bent round braces...... blar blar blar Doing this style of traditional joinery in a round log has many challenges. ... Its a different beast to sawn traditional framing. After blood , sweat and tears (almost) This central ridge pole, post and brace section is ready to erect tomorrow. Exciting...... Some days it felt like it was never gonna happen. Haha slightly dramatic I know.... The round create further complexity to the datum layout and layup. Keeping them stable and still. Working down to the ground as they are so heavy. Constant challenges to overcome. I have to give a big thank you to Ry Cover @thelittleinsideoutside For being there for support, hard work, never giving up and being my right hand man. Loyal and balanced. A real testament to friendship. There is nothing like having the tree in its true form inside your home. Ive also had me dad here from England this week making pegs. We have been working on a interesting house frame that the guys started a while ago, beautifully designed sling brace cross frame. The client supplied the timber , mixed Australian hardwood, lots of live edge and character. Been challenging to scribe but the outcome is really special. We will be installing it next week. ... Its always inspiring working along side the team here. Getting locked in, cutting joints , scribing and getting it done. MINT! 10.01.2022 So we did it! Vanessa’s tiny house is complete and has arrived safely near Wollongong. Over 930km!! Amazing . Thanks to Mark @tiny_towing . . .... . It’s been a really great collaboration project between myself, Vanessa and my good friend shamus from @sorconstruction . Vanessa and I began jamming this design around a year ago, after her seeing my work in @pipmagazineau and resonating with my aesthetic of old/new local / handcrafted. I’m proud to say This design has been made completely bespoke for Vanessa and her needs and style. . . . Myself, Shamus and our team have constructed this tiny with passion for sustainable design, local and recycled materials and love for timber and detail. . . . We are running a 7 day workshop in Inverloch, South Gippsland 5 minutes from an beautiful surf beach! The 7 days will consist of raising the straw bale walls , Classroom time with experienced facilitators talking about different straw bale techniques, solar passive design, council permits, permaculture, natural finishes, waterproofing and carpentry. 04.01.2022 Jules from @surfedgerendering and I have been rendering the bathroom today with a technique called ‘tadelakt’ . It’s a traditional Moroccan natural rendering style . It’s a lime render that is polished with a mix of olive soap applied with a stone. This reaction makes it water proof and ideal for bathroom applications. We have added a natural oxide to get this colour. We have used a bagged product called Marakesh by ROCKCOTE #rockcotemarrakesh .... . . Beautiful, soft , creamy , natural finish. . . Super excited about getting rid of the drop sheets and fit off the bathroom. The first spa bath is gonna be bloody rewarding I tell ya ;) . . Just scribed in the bent queen posts at the end of today. Gonna drop them in tomorrow. Gonna be epic when this thing stands up. Most of this timber was mill by us from salvage just up the road. The trees were pushed up and ready to be burnt. 02.01.2022 So I havn’t posted over this last month. It’s been very challenging for many reasons. Ry and myself have been working so hard on this frame. The shear size and weight of these cypress logs has been difficult. Moving them around , flicking ink lines over the long undulations, scribing bent round braces...... blar blar blar Doing this style of traditional joinery in a round log has many challenges. ... It’s a different beast to sawn traditional framing. After blood , sweat and tears (almost) This central ridge pole, post and brace section is ready to erect tomorrow. Exciting...... Some days it felt like it was never gonna happen. Haha slightly dramatic I know.... The round create further complexity to the datum layout and layup. Keeping them stable and still. Working down to the ground as they are so heavy. Constant challenges to overcome. I have to give a big thank you to Ry Cover @thelittleinsideoutside For being there for support, hard work, never giving up and being my right hand man. Loyal and balanced. A real testament to friendship. There is nothing like having the tree in it’s true form inside your home. I’ve also had me dad here from England this week making pegs.
