21.01.2022 Garden Journal - Entry # 1 It is almost the end of New Years’ day. Goodbye 2020, hello 2021. This is my first entry in what I am calling my garden journal, but will probably end up being a hodge podge of my thoughts with no apparent rhyme or reason just like my thoughts themselves sometimes. Part garden journal, part gratitude journal, part to-do list, part blog, part memoir? I would love to be able to read through these musings 20 years from now, when I imagine all of ...our major homestead goals to be realized and us in the midst of multiple bird-related idioms - children flying the coop, parents becoming empty nesters, feelings of being free as a bird & proud as a peacock. But, let’s just start with today. Today I harvested 3 more lebanese cucumbers from our 7 vines, with the promise of many more to come. Even with the recent heat wave the cucumbers are sweet and crisp, so their position in the most western box with dappled morning sun seems to have been the right choice. Deep watering every other day seems to be enough to keep the garden boxes happy at the moment. I am watering by hand, but it is manageable with only 3 garden boxes & the occasional potted plant. It does take what feels like a long time, but I’m learning to enjoy that time in the morning, before the heat sets in, with only the sounds of the breeze and the birds and the water moving through the hose line. Today I finally see some baby beefeater tomatoes starting on the plants. Up until this point the flower heads have been dying before even opening, but the plants themselves look beautiful. A bit of research tells me that this was most likely blossom drop due to the temperatures being too high. It has been consistently over 32 for almost 2 weeks now, and even some nights have been very warm. I don’t know how many tomatoes we will end up getting this year, but hopefully this weather is just a heat wave and not a warning of what’s to come mid-summer. #gardenjournal #gardennotes #observeandinteract #permacultureprinciples #homesteadgoals #evergreenmicrofarm
